You're right that PATA is only 133Mbps max.
My hard disk will sustain 16x data write to a DVD which is about 22.25Mbytes/sec
but on disk tests it will do 45-50Mbytes/sec. To flatten a gigbit link you
need to be able to get 80Mbytes/sec+. SATA achieves 1.2Gbps for SATA 1 and
SATA 3 is nearer 3Gbps. The early drive mechanisms weren't able to saturate
the SATA interface.
Putting gigabit interfaces onboard is not expensive, not really any more
expensive than a 100MB interface. The cost comes from having ancilliaries that
can benefit from the speed.
