Howdy Folks,

I've recently been working through a pile of problem child Motorola GM300 and
M120 radios I was gifted, and I've noticed a common pattern in many
of the radios which are completely deaf.

I've found three radios which have a failed 2nd LO crystal, and this is
apparently a well known issue with the whole product line, that the 44.645MHz
crystal which runs the second conversion between 45.1MHz and 455kHz just dies.

I have enough scrap Motorola radios sitting around that I've been able to pull
spares from them, but it also appears that you can source replacements on ebay
for a few dollars. They're not the usual HC-49 package for crystals but a smaller
through-hole package.

So if you have a Motorola Radius era rig that is completely deaf, check Y52, which
is on the RF board near the 24 pin DIP receiver chip U51. It's often glued down, so
removing it does tend to require some cutting in addition to solder.
