PIRATE ALERT. Phillip, ZL2TZE, informs OPDX that a station signing
ZK5A has been operating and is reportedly a PIRATE. Station states
that his name is Bill and claims to be on Atafu Island (Tokelau),

SILENT KEY. Brian, KP2HC, informs OPDX: "It is with the greatest of
broken hearts I inform you of the passing of my wife Ann, KP2YL. Ann
passed away at home on April 11th, after a 4 month battle with cancer.
Ann loved getting on the air and giving out 'new ones'. Especially on
the WARC bands. She loved meeting new people. And she loved hearing
from old friends. It's been a thrill for me to share this hobby with
her during the past 15 years. Thank you to everyone who made ham radio
so enjoyable for her." OPDX and its readers would like to send out our
deepest sympathy to Brian, the friends and family of KP2YL (SK). Her
signal/voice on the air will be deeply missed. =

SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS (Update to OPDX.1006). Brad Nowak, N8SNM, Southeast
Michigan DX Association's (SEMDXA) Treasurer, would like to clarify their
position on donations to the Monk Apollo Project. The SEMDXA will not be
accepting any donations for the "Monk Apollo Project" due to the sensitive
nature of "collecting" funds for the Monk as this is not allowed. SEMDXA
has donated the MFJ keyer to the Monastery but not to Monk Apollo himself.
Rick, NE8Z, was not able to operate from Mt Athos but planned to spend
time training Monk Apollo in using the keyer/reader to better improve
chances for many deserving DXer's to work SV/A on CW. For more details
on the project, go to: http://live.semdxa.org/
(click the "Monk Apollo Project" button)

T31, CENTRAL KIRIBATI (Update/Delay). The international team of operators
planning to be active as T31A from Kanton Island (OC-043) has been delayed
for a few days. It was announced on their Web page April 13th: "The boat
chartered for sailing to Kanton is delayed and will not arrive in Apia
until late the 14th or early 15th, so the departure is delayed until maybe
as late as the 16th. The boat captain arrived in Apia by plane. All
operators are anxious about the delay as to how it may affect the T31A
total operating days and also return flights to home QTHs beginning on
May 2nd. Standby for updates." The T31A Web page is available at:
                             http://www.T31A.com
UPDATE JUST BEFORE GOING TO PRINT. Looks like they are enroute to Kanton
Island. From the T31A Web page: =

  April 16th (@ 1535) - BOAT JUST LEFT MARINA.
April 16th (@ 1600) - Boat is in early today Friday morning. Loading
equipment off boat now and will load our equipment

2007, the special event/commemorative station for the 57th Regiment
Martyrs is active every year at the end of April as TC57A. A special
emphasis will be made to work VK/ZL stations. QSL via TCSWAT at: POB 73,
Karakoy, 34421 Istanbul, TURKEY (or by the Bureau). Details and photos
from previous activities are available on the Web site at:
                           http://www.tcswat.org

be active as VP8DNA from the RAF Amateur Radio Club Station (VP8FIR/VP8RAF)
located at the Mount Pleasant Airport on the Falkland Islands (SA-002),
informs OPDX this past week: "Not managed to get on the bands yet. There
is uncertainty on how long I will be here and whether I will get on the
air at all this time. Not great news :-( ."

VP9, BERMUDA (NA-005). Paul, W4/VP9KF (G4BKI), is once again active as
VP9KF from Baileys Bay, Hamilton Parish, between now and April 27th.

YCTU IN DAYTON (May 19th). Tim, K3LR, reports (edited): "This is the
first year for the new Youth focused track at ConTest University (Youth
Contest University [YCTU]) in Dayton. The YCTU Dayton will have its own
classroom right beside the regular CTU classrooms and will be linked via
the Web to other YCTU participants around the world.
Several young operators have signed up to attend in person and present
talks at YCTU, but there is room for more to attend. Full scholarships
for YCTU/CTU registration have been sponsored and are available for
YCTU/CTU participants 25 years old or younger. If you know of a young
amateur radio operator who has an interest in contesting, please encourage
them to come to YCTU." For more details, visit: http://contestuniversity.com

ZK2, NIUE (Update to OPDX.1002). Chris, GM3WOJ/ZL1CT, announced that he
is returning to Niue (OC-040) starting about October 15th, and is hoping
to spend at least 2 months there. He states (edited), "I will be at a new
QTH, using new antennas on the LF bands to improve results (there is S9
QRN on 160m and 80m from the island's 11kV AC distribution system, over
most of the island). I worked nearly 16000 stations in poor conditions
during the 2009 ZK2V operation - my target is 40000+ this time - hopefully
with better conditions and a longer DXpedition. My friend Keith, GM4YXI/
GM5X is joining me for the first 2 weeks of the DXpedition and is hoping
to be QRV as ZK2X in the CQWW DX SSB Contest as a Single-Operator/All-Band
entry." Chris suggests to visit the following Web page, which will be
updated periodically before the DXpedition, at: http://www.zk2v.com
