SILENT KEY. Mitch, Wolfson, DJ0QN, reports that "the DARC has learned of
the death of the Chairman of the DX and HF Contesting Committee of the
DARC, Dr. Lothar Wilke, DL3TD, who was 58 years old. OM Lothar died in
a house fire during the night of Thursday, April 7, 2011. His wife
Christiane and some neighbors have been hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire and further details are not yet available from the
authorities.
OM Lothar was instrumental in integrating the RSV (German Democratic
Republic) with the DARC (Federal Republic of Germany) following the German
reunification. An experienced contester, Lothar has been responsible for the
success of DA0HQ, as well as many other activities.
With Lothar, the DARC has lost not only a key member of the DX and HF
Contesting Committee, but a fine person and radio amateur. Our thoughts and
condolences go out to his wife Christiane and family from the DARC Executive
Committee and all members."

SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS. Rick, NE8Z, has obtained a pilgrim visa for Mount
Athos and plans to visit Monk Apollo, SV2ASP/A, between April 9-16th.
Rick is calling his trip the "Monk Apollo Project". He wants to donate
some equipment which will help Monk Apollo improve his portable operations
in Mount Athos with the intention to produce better signals in Asia which
is partially blocked by a mountain behind his Monastery. One of Rick's
goals is to provide what Monk Apollo needs for CW capability through the
use of a MFJ646 code reader and other software. He will train Monk Apollo
on CW pile up handling techniques. It is not known if Rick is allowed to
become active himself. The Southeast Michigan DX Association has adopted
the project of helping Monk Apollo to improve his permanent and portable
stations. Details on the project and a PayPal link for donations can be
found at: http://live.semdxa.org/ (click the "Monk Apollo Project" button).

T6, AFGHANISTAN (Press Release #2). Paul, N6PSE, Co-Leader of the T6PSE
DXpedition, reports: "The Intrepid-DX Group continues to move forward with
our plans to conduct a DXpedition from Afghanistan to take place during
ten days in May of 2011. Due to security concerns, the exact dates and
location of the DXpedition will not be announced until the eve of our
activation. The team is closely monitoring the security situation and
events in the news coming from Afghanistan. Unless conditions worsen in
the comings weeks, our plans are a go!
Our primary objective is to activate Afghanistan with a goal of providing
as many DXers as possible a 'new one' with this rare DXCC entity and, as
a secondary objective, to give as many band-slots as possible. We will
focus on North and South America during those periods when propagation
is possible to those areas. We anticipate that we will be working EU
amateur stations nearly around the clock, but we will ask for their
cooperation to allow us to work North and South America during those
brief periods each day when propagation will permit us to work those far
away regions.
The team consists of eight operators including: Co-Leader Paul Ewing/
N6PSE, Co-Leader David Collingham/K3LP, Hrane Milosevic/YT1AD, Krassy
Petkov/K1LZ, Al Hernandez/K3VN, David Flack/AH6HY, Alex Pavlenko/UX0LL
and David Ritchie/W6DR.
You can find out more about our plans at:
                   http://www.intrepid-dx.com/t6pse/index.php
Thank you, Paul S. Ewing/N6PSE, Co-Leader T6PSE DXpedition"
