3B8/3B9, MAURITIUS AND RODRIGUEZ ISLAND. Giorgio, IZ4AKS, will be active
as 3B9/IZ4AKS from Rodrigues Island (AF-017) between August 28th and
September 4th. Activity will be limited to his free time as this is a
holiday style operation and not a dedicated DXpedition. Look for activity
on 10-40 meters, mainly SSB, but possibly RTTY and CW. He will use a
FT-897D with 100 watts into a vertical antenna placed near the ocean.
Prior to and after his Rodrigues activity, look for Giorgio to possibly
be active as 3B8/IZ4AKS from Mauritius (AF-049). QSL only direct with
SAE and 2 USDs (NO IRC, NO BUREAU QSLs).
APDXC 2010. The 3rd Asia Pacific DX Convention (APDXC) will be held at
Osaka International House in Osaka, Japan, between November 5-7th, 2010.
There will be presentations (conducted in English!) on some of the recent
DXpeditions, technical sessions, DX dinners banquet, as well as the usual
convention stuff. Also, there will be an opportunity to join a tour to
visit the Icom factory, and participate in a technical session led by the
Icom HF radio design team, and more. Program details and updates will be
announced on the following Web site at: http://www.apdxc.org
AT10, ANTARCTICA. QSL Manager Gianni, I1HYW, informs OPDX that the first
batch of QSL direct for AT10BP received at his home address have been
mailed on August 5th. The remaining requests will be sent out within a
week. All the envelopes that are received now will be answered on a daily
basis. The requests that were sent to India, will not be answered before
December 2010, once Bhagwati returns back home. In the meantime AT10BP
from Maitri Base Antarctica will continue to be active regularly on 20m
(14300 kHz +/- QRM), 15m (21300 kHz +/- QRM) and 40m (7150 kHz +/-QRM)
SSB only. If you would like to have a sked with AT10BP, you can E-mail

DAYTON 2011 HAMVENTION NEWS...........................
* SWODXA DINNER BANQUET. Don DuBon, N6JRL, President of SWODXA, announced
on August 2nd: "Southwest Ohio DX Association (SWODXA) is happy to
announce plans for the 26th annual DX Dinner=99. This dinner, which is
held in conjunction with Dayton Hamvention=AE, will be held on Friday,
May 20, 2011.
Because we realize many attendees make their plans well in advance,
we want to let you know that our location for the dinner has changed.
It will be at the Dayton Marriott located at 1414 S. Patterson Blvd.,
Dayton, OH 45409.
We are excited about our new venue. While it is less than five
minutes from our previous location, it has a much larger capacity,
has been recently renovated, and we will have a new menu selection.
Other advantages are that there are no steps as the dinner will be
held on the ground floor, and there is ample, free, on-site parking.
In our planning meetings, the staff has been very receptive and is
anxious to meet the needs of our attendees and graciously welcomes
SWODXA.
The Marriott is a large hotel with many room choices. Should you
need accommodations, their phone number is 937 223-1000 or the website
is: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/dayoh-dayton-marriott.
When tickets become available, more information regarding the
dinner will be posted on our website at www.SWODXA.org.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the DX Dinner=99 at the Marrio=
tt
and at Hamvention=AE. Good Dxing!"
* Tim, K3LR, Dayton Contest Dinner Chairman, reports: The 19th annual
Saturday night Contest Dinner, Contest University and the Contest
Super Suites are confirmed at the Crowne Plaza for 2011. There are
no plans to change locations for 2011. Please watch the Dayton

DX0, SPRATLY ISLANDS (Update). Press Release dated August 6th (edited):
"Only 150 days to go before the scheduled QRV of the multi-operator
DXpedition on Thitu Island in the Spratlys January 6-24th, 2011, and
more substantial progress has been achieved.
The Philippines National Telecommunications Commission has issued the
DX0DX licence and DXpedition Team Leader Chris Dimitrijevic/VK3FY and
DU8/VK3FY confirms that the required documentation is filed with the
DXCC Advisory Committee. Formal DXCC accreditation is expected soon
after proof is electronically submitted that operators have reached the
island and DX0DX is on air. It was earlier announced that Bob Schenck,
N2OO, has been appointed the QSL manager.
Among the current and growing list of corporate sponsors are ICOM
America which is providing ten top-line IC7600 transceivers & a IC-9100
Transceiver, Amplifiers from Acom International, OM Power and THAMWAY Corp.
Antennas from SteppIR, Spiderbeam and Mosley- Electronics. Bandpass Filters
from WX0B Array Solutions, Masts from Rohn Products. Ham Radio Outlet,
Head-sets from Heil Sound, Feeders The RF Connection.
Decisions are now being finalized on the roles needed for the DXpedition.
The logistical co-ordination of equipment from sponsors is being headed
by Charles W6KK where we are basing our shipments.
The massive logistics exercise to get the equipment, supplies and
operators shipped to Thitu Island has received confirmation that the boat
to be used is undergoing its annual dry-dock maintenance and certification.
Other expertise within the team is being used to plan rostering, logging
and the many different tasks required to make it a success.
The team=92s medical doctors are ready to assist should anyone become
unwell, and to also outreach to the island=92s residents as part of the
DXpedition=92s humanitarian, health and welfare contribution.
It has also been learnt that some of the 30 operators lined up for the
DXpedition are using it as a personal incentive to lose some body weight
as they prepare for their stay on the island.
This will be especially helpful for those wishing to frequently walk
between four dedicated operating camps for SSB, CW, RTTY and 2m & 6m
operation. Not to mention trips to the mess tent for meals.
Online surveying of DXers finds that the demand for The Spratlys on
160m to 10m is fairly equal with each band falling in the 9% - 11% range
after 2,670 votes received.
The preferred mode survey results to date are SSB (36%), CW (35%) and
RTTY (27%) with 785 votes cast.
The DX0DX Team acknowledges the financial support already received from
individual radio amateurs Brad/WA6JJB, Paul/N6PSE, Marc/DO4DXA, Maurice/
N4LZ, Vic/W4VIC, Ken/N5TY, Allan/VK2CA, Paul/VK2HV, Scotty/KG9Z, Clay/K7HC,
Mitch/DJ0QN, Neill/K4ESE, Doyl/AB4IQ, William/K3WA and Billy/W3EL.
Support has also been given by the IARU Region 3 member society Philippi=
ne
Amateur Radio Association (PARA), DXWORLD, The Daily Dx and ClubLog."
E2/HS, THAILAND (News)...............................
* Through the efforts of Radio Amateur Society of Thailand (RAST),
John/HS1CHB and Charly/HS0ZCW, The Thailand radio authority has
approved, effective today (August 8th) for all HF bands and all
modes the new callsign of E2E. This is a real and legitimate call,
sought because it is so short (and to bring glory to the Kingdom
of Thailand, and fun for its operators). QSL via HS0AC.
* Charles Harpole, HS0ZCW/K4VUD, reports: "You can help Thailand
authorities understand the need to authorize full use of the 6 meter
band for Thailand hams (HS and E2). Please send an E-mail via the
Radio Amateur Society of Thailand (RAST), typical below, supporting
this authorization, to the RAST coordinator of this effort: 'John',
HS1CHB, whose E-mail address is his USA callsign at: n9wms@hotmail.com
Example -
To Whom It May Concern:
I support the allocation of full time use of the amateur ham
radio band of 50 to 54 MHz for all Thailand licensed operators.
I have, for many years, sought a contact with Thailand hams on
this band. There are international awards for such two-way
exchanges, but, to date, it has not been possible. The 50 to 54
MHz band also is important to ham radio contests where world-wide
efforts to contact Thailand are in demand. This 6 meter band
permission for Thailand can bring Thailand into agreement with
almost all of the other global countries' rules, and it complies
with international band-plans.
Further, the allocation of the 6 meter band to Thailand hams
opens a good band for emergency communication uses and relieves
congestion on other bands.
Thank you for your consideration.
FULL NAME AND ADDRESS (be sure to add your country name)
------------------------------------
NOTES: Please be sure to be super polite, do not say that past
practice is bad, and include the '50 to 54' MHz phrase. Please
use your own words where ever possible to avoid canned messages,
but a can message is better than no message.
Your help will make a difference because Thailand never wants to
be first to do something like this, but never wants to be left out
or be behind. Thanks and 73,..... Charles Harpole, HS0ZCW"
ET, ETHIOPIA (Press Release from Chris, GD6TWF). "The following appeal was
made on: http://dx-world.net/2010/assistance-required/
Hi! I am Abel (ex-9E2ABL). What I want to ask about is that I have passed
the RSGB exam and am now properly licensed.. but when I apply for the
license here I am required to have a radio & I may pay for the custom
duty here but for the radio that I cannot afford ... so if there is a
way like an organization to support or anything...that I can get a radio
it will be so helpful. I hope I will get a positive response.
Thank you, 73 Abel
Following this appeal Sid May, ET3SID, a British National Resident in
Ethiopia for decades contacted <www.dx-world.net> to say he had coached
four young Ethiopians all members of the Ethiopian Amateur Radio Society
("EARS") though the examination including Abel and stated that all four
were in the same position they had the qualification to get a license but
could not afford the cost of buying, shipping and importing equipment.
As a result of this request several amateurs made offer of help and it
was decided to form a simple appeal to raise funds and accept donations
of equipment so that these four young amateurs could get on the air.
The appeal is called Amateur Radio In Ethiopia ("ARIE") and a webpage
has been launched at <http://tinyurl.com/ETproject> which gives all the
information and details on how to donate.
We have already had offers of equipment and cash donations from UK,
Germany, New Zealand, UK, USA and Isle of Man.
The appeal has been designed so anyone can donate according to means.
That old rig gathering dust on the shelf would change someone's life. A
small donation would allow us to buy PL259's or a few metres of coax. A
big donation would allow us to ship a donated rig out.
We welcome donations from individuals, clubs, societies, associations,
dx-groups any where in the world. If your business is interested in being
involved please contact us to see how we can work together.
We passionately believe that this organization will have a life long
impact on the recipients, help people enjoy their hobby who, without your
help, would not be able to do so. Contributed towards equipping Ethiopian
hams who will be making contacts and giving many other hams a new DXCC
country while at the same time developing their own valuable technical
skills and career prospects. For any questions please look at our Website
<http://tinyurl.com/ETproject> or contact Chris Wood at: gd6twf@iom.com "

QSLING CYPRUS STATIONS. Alan, 5B4AHJ, CARS QSL Bureau Manager, reports:
"The QSL Bureau of the Cyprus Amateur Radio Society (CARS) is receiving
large numbers of QSLs that cannot be delivered to the intended recipient,
because that station has a QSL manager outside Cyprus.
The problem is threefold:
a) Those generating the QSLs are not bothering to check to see if
the station has a manager.
b) Even if a manager's call is written on the QSL, many QSL Bureaus
are still sending the QSL to Cyprus.
c) QSLs for calls 5B/DXcall are being sent to Cyprus when either they
should be sent to the manager, or in the absence of a manager, they
should be sent to the bureau for the home call.
I have produced a list of stations with foreign managers at:
http://www.shacklog.co.uk/5BForeignManagers.htm
Please pass this information far and wide, including to your local QSL
Bureau."
NEW QSL MANAGER. Vladislav, RN4LP, informs OPDX that he is now the
QSL Manager for EK6LP. He states that QSOs will be uploaded to the
LoTW "ONLY AFTER":

He states, "Contest QSOs will be uploaded 6 months later and there
are ONLY direct QSLs (w/2 USDs or 1 new IRC). Sorry, NO BUREAU or

VQ9, CHAGOS ISLANDS (News). Larry, N0QM/VQ9LA, on Diego Garcia (AF-006)
informs OPDX: "The VQ9X club station lost the HYGAIN 14 ELEMENT HF LOG
PERIODIC ANTENNA early July 2010 due to a Boom to Mast Clamp failure,
the antenna is now on the ground and will be repaired in the future.
When the antenna fell off the mast it took out the 40M dipole, Wire
V-Beam, and 2 meter repeater antenna.
The V-beam was repaired on 30th July 2010 by VQ9LA and VQ9JC, now the
VQ9X club is on the air with the 270 foot per leg ladder line V-Beam.
The 160m antenna will be off the air until the Log Periodic is put
back up on the tower. This fine antenna has provided many contacts with
the world wide DX community for the past 11 years and will be missed.
I returned back to Diego Garcia on 26 July 2010 after being off the
Island for a few months.... 73, Larry VQ9LA"
WC5, UNITED STATES (USI Op). Members of the Tri-County Amateur Radio Club
(WC5C) will once again activate Pelican Island (TX050L) on August 14th,
starting at 1400z. Pelican Island is an uninhabitated island on Eagle
Mountain Lake in North Central Texas. The club members make an adventure
of it, getting to the Island by kayak, canoe and various other water
craft. Activity will be typically 40/20/15/10 meters. However, the WC5C
team will attempt to honor sked requests for other bands. Modes are
usually CW and SSB, others by request...sometimes Satellite FM, PSK31,
etc.... QSL info is available on QRZ.com.
ZD9, TRISTAN DA CUNHA AND GOUGH ISLANDS. John, ZS1LF, will be active as

on the polar supply ship "SA Agulhas" (the same ship Pierre, ZS1HF/ZS8M
used). Activity will be on 160-10 meters mainly using SSB, but possibly
some Digital modes later. Operating will mostly be done after his official
working hours and weekends. His equipment will be a TS-480 and dipoles

South Africa. Also by the Bureau. More details are available on QRZ.com.
PLEASE NOTE: John states, "If you require Gough Island, please feel free
to contact me at zd9gi@yahoo.co.uk and I will try to assist you. If you
do not get an answer immediately, it means I am out of the office and
busy elsewhere on the island. I will return all E-mails when I return.
If you would like to receive pictures and stories, please E-mail me."
