                       World lightwave DX record broken

Greetings All,

The report of the 288km NLOS one way cloudbounce contact across Bass Strait
from VK7 to VK3 has now been posted to the REAST website and can be found
at: http://reast.asn.au/optical.php#20091027.

This report details the equipment used, conditions, and the Weak Signal
Communicator application that made the contact possible thanks to David
Smith VK3HZ.

Also posted is the video of the first attempt made a week earlier and shows
the rather dramatic effects of fog at the transmitter end on Mt Horror. This
video can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu-5KNVjNO4

Well <<blush>> that's perhaps overstating things a little.

You'd have to say that 99% of the credit goes to Rex for his efforts in
developing a system that is capable of crossing Bass Strait by Cloudbounce
(ECE).

His 60 Luxeon transmitter (AKA Sunburner) and APD Receiver capable of
capturing the 14 photons that made it across the water were described in a
recent series in DUBUS, which makes for good reading.

Well done Rex and Joe.

Dave

For info much of the credit goes to David VK3HZ who developed a new mode
called WSC that works down to -44 dB as signals were not good enough to
achieve decoding with JT65a. The communcation was one way only from Mt
Horror in VK7 to Mt Liptrap in VK3 but we achieved our objective of crossing
Bass Strait.

Joe VK7JG reported on the VKlogger this morning that: "We broke the world
light record last night at 288 Km".

Presumably, Rex VK7MO was the other end of the contact.

Posted in the interests of recording the news and congratulating the
participants.
