2009 MMAA CW CONTEST. If you are not attending the Dayton HamVention,
you may want to be active in the CWJF's 2009 Manchester Mineira All
America CW Contest, May 16-17th. This year's event is mainly for stations
in North and South America. However, in 2010 it will be world-wide. For

ADDED NOTE: Look for Alex, PY2WAS, to activate a rare Brazilian State
outside and during the MMAA CW Contest. Activity will be from Macapa,

5V7, TOGO. Werner, DL9MBI, is now active as 5V7PM from some miles outside
the capital city of Lome (approx. 2 miles from the sea) until May 30th.

7X, ALGERIA (Special Event/Ham Meet). Members of the Algerian Radio
Amateur Association (A.R.A) and Djelfa Radio Club (7X2VFK) will activate
the special event callsign 7X2DD during the International Algerian Sahara
HAM Meeting (June 15-21st). Activity will be on all bands/modes, and a
special diploma will be issued instead of a QSL card.
A3, TONGA (Update). Paul, A35RK, informs OPDX that Dave, A35KL, has left
Vava'u (OC-064) for Tongatapu (OC-049), but he will not be on the air
from there. He adds, "Dave has my broken FT-450, and he sold me his K3,
which saved my radio-life here. He returns stateside next Tuesday."
Look for A35RK/p to be active from OC-064, on 80-17 meters, CW and SSB,
using an Elecraft K3 and a G5RV antenna. You can take a look at Paul's

Paul ends his E-mail by informing us, "I seem to have forgotten to bring
some critical USB interface cables, so RTTY will not be possible unless
I can find a work-around. All is well. Vava'u is beautiful."
CS6, PORTUGAL (New CT Island). The Algarve STAR DX Team is planning to
activate another new island in the southern part of Portugal on May 24th.
They plan to use the callsign CS6A. It is a private island (Ilhas em
Grandes Barragens - Large Dams Islands was mentioned) and this will
be the first time the owner has authorized activity! Currently, there
is a small problem to get to the island. A small bridge to the island
is down and landing via boat is very very difficult. More details are

* The 24th annual SWODXA DX Dinner will be Friday evening, May 15th,
at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, located in Dayton City Center. Their
speakers will be John Stanley/K4ERO, and Ruth Stanley/WB4LUA. This
husband and wife team travel the globe installing, maintaining and
training personnel for religious international shortwave stations.
They have been to over 60 DXCC entities and operated from more than
12 of them. John has written many technical articles in the ham
journals (with one in the April 2009 issue of QST), is a recipient
of the 2007 Doug DeMaw Technical Excellence Award and is an ARRL
Technical Advisor, having contributed many pieces to the ARRL Handbook.

house in the middle of the island, which was built in the
colonial era in Indonesia. No lighthouse reference number

PIRATE ALERT! Colin, G3PSM, reports: "An email just received from the
Secretary General of the Nigerian Amateur Radio Society states that
5N/LZ1QK is not licenced in accordance with the Nigerian Telecommunica-
tions Act of 2006 and is therefore a pirate. Incidentally it is mandatory

cards out, but my HP laptop (that had gone with me to 7P8 and C91 in
2003 and 2006) power supply finally gave up the ghost, but a nearby
computer repair facility WAS able to at least transfer the HD to a
portable hard drive and save the logs. Also thanks to Ed Longhi, W5VP,
of Datamatrix developer and distributor of Prolog 2K, my logging program
for the time on the phone he gave me in retrieving everything off the
external hard drive. I know I can ask some really dumb questions. Ed,
your assistance with my phone calls for help all in one afternoon
I'm sure were frustrating. But it's nice to see a software developer
take the time to walk klutzes like me through the retrieval and printing
of everyone's QSL label."

SILENT KEY. Albert L. "Lee" Bergren, W0AR, became a Silent Key "SK" at
the age of 93 on May 1st. Lee was an accomplished electronics engineer,
author, designer and advisor with special accomplishments in the field of
antenna and radio amplifier design. He was co-founder of Radio Industries
of Kansas City. He was inducted into the National DX Hall of Fame in 2002.
Lee developed the multi-element cubical quad antenna and published his
results in a seminal article in QST Magazine in 1963. Lee was an advisor
and mentor to young engineers and radio enthusiasts and was co-founding
member of the Kansas City DX Club, the Mid-Continent Chapter 35 of QCWA,
and was a Life Member of the American Radio Relay League. OPDX and its
readers would like to send out our deepest sympathy to the family and
friends of W0AR.
SOLAR CYCLE 24 TO PEAK IN MAY 2013. An international panel of experts
led by NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center reports Solar Cycle 24
will peak in May 2013 with 90 sunspots per day, averaged over a month.
Excerpts from a report NOAA press release states, "If the prediction
proves true, Solar Cycle 24 will be the weakest cycle since number 16,
which peaked at 78 daily sunspots in 1928, and ninth weakest since the
1750s, when numbered cycles began......The panel also predicted that
the lowest sunspot number between cycles-or solar minimum-occurred in
December 2008, marking the end of Cycle 23 and the start of Cycle 24.
If the December prediction holds up, at 12 years and seven months Solar
Cycle 23 will be the longest since 1823 and the third longest since 1755.
Solar cycles span 11 years on average, from minimum to minimum." Read

SU8, EGYPT (LH Op). Said, SU1SK, and several other SU operators will be
active as SU8LH from the first Egyptian Lighthouse DXpedition on Ras
El-Bar Island in the Dumyat zone in northern Egypt between August 1-9th.
Look for SU8LH to participate in the special event ILLW International
Lighthouse-Lightship Week. Activity will be on the HF bands, as well as

TK, CORSICA. YL Eva/HA3FRE and Tomi/HA4DX will be in Corsica between
May 16-23rd with a Hungarian tourist group. They will be active during
the evening hours and nights. The QTH will be Ersa, near Tollari, Cape
Corse (IOTA: EU-014, MIA: MCO-001, QRA: JN43QA). They will signing
TK/homecall. Activity will be on 40 and 30 meters, CW mostly. QSL via
their home callsigns, direct or by the HA Bureau.
VK7, AUSTRALIA. Chris, G0WFH, will be active as VK7ACG from Tasmania
between October 19th and November 17th. Activity will be mainly on SSB
and the lower frequencies. Chris states that he will use a 60 ft. vertical
for 160/80/40 meters, a beam for 20/15/10 meters and an Inverted V dipole
for 17/12 meters. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the Bureau,
and eQSL is also "OK".
VK9N, NORFOLK ISLANDS (OC-005). Members of the Hellenic Amateur Radio
Association of Australia (HARAOA Group) will be active as VK9AAA between
July 22-29th. The HARAOA Group plans to have 3-4 stations on the air,
and plan to be active on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY. They plan
to take part in the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th) during their stay.
Equipment to be used are ICOM radios into Spiderbeams, verticals and
dipoles. Current operators mentioned are: Tommy/VK2IR (Team Leader),
Chris/VK3FY (Co-Leader), Peter/VK3FGRC (Team Member/Webmaster) and Keith/

WRTC-2010 ANNOUNCED. Some details of the 2010 World Radiosport Team
Championship (the Olympic's of contesting) were released this past week.
The WRTC-2010 will take place near the Russian capital of Moscow between
July 8-12th, 2010. There will be 50 teams to compete from all over the
world. All competitors will be located in the same geographical area within
40 x 30 km where height differences are not bigger than 40 meters. All
competitor locations will be separated at least 500 m from each other.
The event will be hosted by the "Soyuz Radioljubiteley Rossii" - Russian
National Amateur Radio Society. For more details, visit the WRTC-2010

XL/XM/XN/XO, CANADA (Special Prefixes). The following prefixes are being
used by Canadians until the end of May: VE=XM, VA=XL, VO=XN and VY=XO.
The special prefixes are for celebrating the 50th anniversary of the
opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Look for Paul, VE9NC, to operate as
XM9NC on digital and SSB modes on 20, 40 and 80 meters. QSL is via VE9NC.
XM3NOO is also actively using the special prefix. QSL via VE3NOO. ADDED
NOTE: In February and March of 2010, Canadians will use VX=VE, VG=VA,
XK=VY and XJ=VO. These special prefixes will be used to promote the 2010
Winter Olympics Games in Canada.
YM3, TURKEY. Yasar, TA3D, will be active as YM3D during the CQWW WPX CW
Contest (May 30-31st) as a Single-Op/All-Band entry. QSL via TA3D.
ZK2, NIUE (Update/OC-040). Chris, ZL1CT (GM3WOJ), will be active as ZK2V
as early 0700z, May 17th through June 20th. He is already traveling north
in ZL in preparation for departure next week. If the weather cooperates,
he will land in Niue on Saturday afternoon, May 16th - which is early
Sunday UTC. He states that this 5 week DXpedition is not a "Holiday
DXpedition" but it aims to give as many stations their first QSO with
ZK2 as possible. This is the cyclone season, so operation may be interrupted
by electrical storms. Resources are limited, so activity will be mainly
on 80/40/20/15 meters using CW and SSB, with some 30/17/12 meter activity
and RTTY. Planned operations include entries in the 2009 ARRL CW and Phone
Contests. He is told that he will have Internet access from his QTH. If
so, his plans are to upload logs to LoTW on a daily or every other day
