MESSAGE: (#1737) XR7W team accident
AUTHOR: Zoli Pitman
DATE: February 12, 2008 at 15:28 UTC

Dear all,

Last Friday we successfully arrived to Caleta Tortel after abt 450 km
driving on gravel roads on very mountainous terrain. We boarded our boat
Jorge Montt and left for Wager Island. Due to the bad weather conditions
in the Messier Channel we had to stay overnight in a protected bay. We
arrived to Wager Island on Saturday noon. We quickly set up the antennas
at the tideline and the pileups started. At around 1800 the rain started
too and was followed by gale force winds. The tents were deformed by the
wind and even the ¨all weather proof¨tents could not resist the sheer
pressure of water and soon we were all soaked. Food, clothes,
everything. In the meantime our boat sought protection from the elements
in a protected bay in Byron Island. By 2000 local we lost contact with
them too. We spent the rest of the night trying to operate, communicate
with the CE Navy and protect ourselves from the rain and wind. At 9 AM
we had to reduce operation to minimum to spare gasoline for emergency
communication. At 1 PM we were told by the CE Navy base to leave the
island immediately and seek refuge. I had a last frenetic hour on 17m
running EU at 5q/min rates under a piece of plastic hand keying on my
knee and paperlogging until the captain gave the final order to leave.
At that moment we had 2400 QSOs from XR7W in the log. Crossing the
channel again at the Peñas Golf was horrifying. We got back to Tortel by
5AM Sunday morning. After obtaining the necessary documentation to Roger
we left Tortel at 11AM. Everything was ¨fine¨ until 1930 when near to a
small place called Bahia Murta our rented/borrowed van slipped of the
gravel road and hit a rock frontally and turned upside-down. The car was
frontally damaged and we were first taken to a nearby village called Rio
Tranquillo which had a first aid outpost where our injuries were
inspected and we were immediately sent to Coyhaique abt 200 km away in
an ambulance car, the nearest place with a hospital.

There we were inspected more thoroughly and xrayed. Vlad RV1CC was
diagnosed with a broken left upper arm, Marco CE6TBN with cuts and
bruises and a broken rib, Yuri RA0FU with cuts and me with a broken
finger (not cw!), a broken rib and am suffering from compression on the
torax bone. The question this morning was if Vlad had to be operated
here or can be flown home to SPB. I feel very lucky to survive that
accident and I hope we all get the fit-to-fly (sic!) clearance asap.

Of course our first priority at the moment is to get out from Coyhaique.
The damage in car, equipment and additional costs are estimated in
excess of 11k euro. Some photos were taken, as soon as I will a bit more
fit, I will publish them somewhere. If you can and want to contribute to
lessen this damages please feel free to contact me via ha1ag@yahoo.com .
Please feel free to circulate this info bulletin.

This expedition took us to the most difficult places in non-Antarctic
Chile and it frustrates me that we missed the very last step.

73!

 Ducie Island - VP6DX - News #15- 2008 Feb 14

Here are the first words from the island via Iridium:

Operations began Feb 11/0500z with a little "cooking session" to check
out the stations and available antennas. After several days of hard
work, it was relaxing to make some QSOs. With another big construction
day ahead on Feb 12, the cooking session ended at 11/0930z. The cooking
session worked 1034 QSOs.

Continuous operations began Feb 12/0300z. Over 10,000 QSOs (excluding
the cooking session) were logged in the first 16 hours. First day total
was 17026 raw QSOs (unduped). Peak clock hour rate was 1069 QSOs (seven
stations).

QSO #20,000 was worked at Feb 13/0618z. QSO #30,000 was worked at Feb
13/2313z. Reduced operations occurred during daylight as more antennas
were completed. The second day's total was 14,301 raw QSOs.

Two short breaks in operations occurred this evening around
14/0400-0500z to allow the M/V Braveheart to receive weather fax.
Depending on the position of the ship, some of our transmitters can
interfere with the fax receiver.

 Online Log
 **********

The Online Log is now available! It could happen that not all QSOs are
in the database because of difficulties in transferring the data from
the island to the server.

There is a small bug in the online log script which sometimes shows not
all bands in the table. We are working on that problem.

 Frequencies
 ***********

Please have a look at the frequency table at:
 http://ducie2008.dl1mgb.com/operating/frequencies/index.php.
We adjusted some frequencies. Regarding split operation please always
listen carefully what the operator says. [Araucaria mailing list]

Serbia: Kosovo to Be Independent February 17, 2008
By DUSAN STOJANOVIC -- February 08, 2008

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) --- The Serbian minister for Kosovo said Friday
that his government has information that the province's Albanian
leadership will declare independence on Feb. 17.

Slobodan Samardzic said in a statement that "the government of Serbia is
receiving relevant information" that Kosovo's government will "illegally
declare unilateral independence of Kosovo on Sunday, Feb. 17." He did
not specify the source of information.

The Kosovo Albanian leadership has said that it will declare
independence from Serbia "in a matter of days," but has never specified
the exact date.

Serbia strongly rejects the statehood of Kosovo even though the southern
province has not been under its control since NATO's bombing in 1999 to
stop a crackdown against the Kosovo Albanian separatists.

Samardzic's statement was issued after a meeting with a senior European
Union official, Stefan Lehne, who was in Belgrade to clarify the bloc's
plans to send an EU policing and administrative mission to Kosovo.

Serbia has rejected the EU mission, saying it would be a prelude to the
province's independence.

Samardzic said that Serbia will not sign any cooperation agreement with
the EU, arguing that it would amount to "the signature for the
independence of Kosovo."

The Serbian government has been deadlocked over its ties with the EU.
Nationalist Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's faction rejects closer
ties with the EU because of the Kosovo issue, while the pro-Western
groups allied to President Boris Tadic advocate quick Serbian
integration into the bloc.

The United States and most EU nations support Kosovo's independence,
saying they would recognize the province's statehood soon after it is
declared by Kosovo Albanians.

CQ Announces Expansion of WPX Award Program
Digital Modes Added Along with New Bands

(Hicksville, NY, Feb. 14, 2008) -- CQ magazine and WPX Awards Manager
Steve Bolia, N8BJQ, have announced several changes to the WPX Award
program in response to feedback from program participants. The changes,
effective immediately, add new bands and create a new Digital WPX Award.

Under the new rules, contacts on all bands between 160 and 6 meters will
count for WPX award credit. In addition, new band endorsements will now
be available for 5 MHz, 10 MHz, 18 MHz, 24 MHz and 50 MHz contacts. A
separate Digital WPX Award has also been added, for contacts made on
RTTY, PSK and other keyboard modes, with 300 confirmed prefixes required
for the basic level of the award. Digital-mode contacts will also count
toward the existing Mixed award, as will those prefixes worked on the
newly added bands.

Details on these and other changes will be published in the March 2008
issue of CQ magazine and are posted along with the March issue
highlights on the CQ magazine website at <www.cq-amateur-radio.com>.

The WPX Award Program recognizes amateurs for making confirmed contacts
with the many callsign prefixes used by radio amateurs around the world.
Top achievers are eligible for the WPX Honor Roll and the WPX Award of
Excellence. General information and complete rules are available on the
CQ website at <www.cq-amateur-radio.com/awards.html>.

CQ magazine sponsors a variety of operating awards and on-air
competitions to encourage amateur radio operators to sharpen their
operating skills and to recognize those reaching high levels of
achievement. [CQ Newsletter]
