NEW SUNSPOT (From Space Weather News -- dated for Sept. 22nd, 2008): For
the first time in months, a significant sunspot is emerging on the sun.
It is a fast-growing active region with two dark cores, each larger than
Earth. The magnetic polarity of the sunspot identifies it as a member
of new Sunspot Cycle 24. Because the year 2008 has brought so many blank
suns, some observers have wondered if we are ever going to climb out of
the ongoing deep solar minimum. Today's new sunspot is an encouraging
sign that the 11-year solar cycle is indeed progressing, albeit slowly."
Visit Space Weather News for sunspot photos and updates at:
                           http://spaceweather.com

SILENT KEY. It was reported that Jens, OZ5MJ, became a "Silent Key"
(SK) this past Sunday, September 21st, at the age of 77 years. Jens was
a well-known DXer who was on the DXCC Honor Roll,he was also a very active
DXer. Whenever there was a DXpedition, Jens could be found in the pile up.
One of his biggest interests was IOTA hunting, and we are sure that many
IOTA DXpeditioners will remember working him. He was on the IOTA honor roll
listed with 982 islands. Thanks to him, IOTA EU-171 and EU-172 were added
to the IOTA list back in year 2000. He was also very interested in RTTY
and PSK31, and operated in quite a few RTTY contests over the years. He
also enjoyed hunting for U.S. counties as well. OPDX and its readers would
like to send out our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of OZ5MJ.
