** EDITOR'S SPECIAL NOTICE: This week's bulletin was sent out earlier
than normal to accommodate the late CQWW WPX CW Contest announcements.
Also, we wanted to provide the readers with a consolidated listing
of the CQWW WPX CW Contest participants.
** SPECIAL NOTE FROM EDITOR (Short Dayton HamVention Wrap-Up By KB8NW):
I has been an interesting couple of weeks due to my health issues,
but things seem to be better now since my heart procedure, and I was
able to attend Dayton. It is always great to see the many DXers from
all over the world. It is the special camaraderie I enjoy, visiting and
talking to the DXers/Contesters of the world. The NODXA Hospitality
Suite is a great place to share this camaraderie with well-known DXers.
Anyway, I did miss the DX Dinner Banquet because of my duties of helpi=
ng
to run the NODXA suite with our hostess Janeen Hire (W8ZET). We
did hear, however, that the NH8S Swains Island operation received the
"SWODXA (SouthWest Ohio DX Association) DXpedition of the Year for
2012-2013".
The weather was almost perfect for the flea market, but it did not
fair too well for my bad knee (with all the walking). This year's DX
Forum included talks on:
* DX legend Al Hix, W8AH (SK) - speaker Hal Turley, W8HC
* Interesting talk on propagation, Cycle 24 and a possible second
peak - by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA
* DXpedition to St. Peter & St. Paul Rocks - by George Wallner, AA7JV
* DXpedition to Yemen (Socotra Island) - by Dave Collingham, K3LP
The 2013 Dayton HamVention in all was a great time and experience.

have experienced some very big pileups on RTTY so please be patient - I
am not an experienced DXpedition operator! The Qatar Amateur Radio Society
have made me very welcome and I am very grateful to them for the support
and help they have given me." Mark's setup is a FT-450 and Buddypole. He
has provided the ARRL with the necessary documents of licensing for all
his callsigns and uploads to LoTW regularly. Visit his Blog page for

K6VVA/KL7 IOTA TOUR INFO UPDATE. Rick, K6VVA, informed OPDX on May 16th
[edited]: "I have received several inquiries as to the status of the
K6VVA/KL7 - North Slope IOTA tour, which was QRX'd from 2012 (NA-172
QRX'd again from the NA-242 trip in 2011).
Here is the situation as of today, as I have continued to monitor solar
condx and trends. If anyone wonders why, you can read my previous his-
torical comments on the <dx-world.net> website also relating to 70 Degree
North Latitude HF operating, the Auroral Oval concerns, and that Mike,
K9AJ, and I would have set foot on NA-172 right in the middle of a major
solar X-Flare had we gone to NA-172 last Summer. This would NOT have
resulted in a successful activation in spite of enormous expenses involved.
In less than a month now, on 3 different occasions the K Index has spiked
to K=3D4. The prognosis for this summer from observations of solar trends
and my perspective appears that things will likely be similar to last
summer (2012). And, that escalated CME and X-Flare activity is more common
near and at the peak of any sunspot cycle (if you can call this a peak).
Mike, K9AJ, has decided he is only interested in doing NA-172 with me,
and NA-050 is pretty much a one-person activation anyway. So I am breaking
up the 'Tour' into 3 separate chunks which may, or may not be done in one
lengthy trip vs. separate ones (NA-172, NA-004 & NA-050). NA-004 is NOT
the 'Drive-On' QTH many have worked in the past. It is a boat journey &
Bear Guards venue like NA-172.
At this point, there is a 50-50 possibility that any of these activations
will take place until 2014, and a final decision will not be made until
mid June to possibly the first week in July. I am not going to make any
official date changes at this point. Mainland lodging reservations will
remain in place for NA-172 unless it may be determined to QSY that activa-
tion plan again to Summer 2014. My personal NA-004 and NA-050 plans will
remain fluid, and hope to at least make one or more quick attempts at least
to NA-050 this year if solar condx coooperate (or in-between any CME's or
X-Flares), because this one requires the least advance logistics beyond
several airline leg seats and local lodging. I also have some other
business to attend to in NA-050 when I finally get up there.
I have various other IOTA Projects on the back burner, one or more of
which may occur without much advance notification, if any. As I am ready
to push the send button on this Info Update, the solar K Index has spiked
back up to K=3D5. No Bueno..... FYI & 73... Rick, K 6 V V A * The Locus"

3D2XX QSL INFO. Kip, W6SZN, reports: "I have the logs and blank cards
for our 1988 3D2XX operation from Rotuma. Cards sent to Eddie, VK4AN,
will eventually get to me."
NEW LoTW Software Available: Last week the ARRL Letter and Web page
reports: "After much testing, the ARRL will release a new version of
Trusted QSL, the open-source development project responsible for de-
veloping and maintaining the three Logbook of the World (LoTW) client-
side applications: TQSL, TQSLCert and the TrustedQSL library. After
six weeks of public beta testing, version 1.14 is ready for official
release and will be available for download from the ARRL website beginning
Monday, May 20th." For details on improvements, see:
http://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-announces-new-version-of-LoTW-software
However, on May 21st, the League reported that they found three defects
in the software:
=95Incorrect behavior when the user specifies the wrong ITU zone
=95Incorrect behavior when TQSL is invoked via command line without
the =96l switch present
=95Incorrect behavior when processing an ADIF file containing duplicate
QSOs when TQSL is running on MacOS =
These defects have been corrected, but they must test the corrected
version before publicly releasing it. Expect the public release within
the next 10 days (by the end of the month). For more details and the
download for the fixed version, go to:
http://www.arrl.org/logbook-of-the-world
QSL CORRECTION. The QSL Manager for the EJ7NET DXpedtion to the Aran
Islands (EU-006) has been changed to HB9ASZ (not EI6FR), direct and/or
by the Bureau. LoTW will be uploaded once HB9ASZ receives the log.

SPECIAL REQUEST FROM DL1MGB: "Hello DXers all over the world! This time I
am not announcing a new DXpedition (don't worry, the planning for the next
one has already started). This time I want to call your attention to a
campaign a colleague of mine (Tobias H=F6her) and me initiated.
We are going to participate in the Dodentocht <http://www.dodentocht.be/>
which takes place on August 9th, 2013, around the city of Bornem in Belgium.
The Dodentocht is a 100 km hike which has to be finished by foot in minimum
10 and maximum 24 hours.
100 km or 24 hours can get very long, and we will have definitely our
lows. So we decided to find as many supporters as possible, who are willing
to donate a pre-determined amount of money for every commenced kilometer.
These donations will go 100% to the Kinderkrebshilfe Berchtesgadener Land
und Traunstein e.V. (Childern's Cancer Aid), an incorporated society with
a lot of voluntary helpers. They are giving advise, help and financial
support not only to children having cancer but also to children and
teenagers whose parents suffer from cancer or already died as a result
of cancer.
What has it to do with DXing? -- At first glance nothing. I will not
carry any radio with me giving out ON / Belgium to the deserving. At
second glance maybe. Going on a DXpedition is not only taking a plane
or boat, going to a remote place, sit there and work pile-ups. The work
to around it (carrying equipment, building antennas and stations and
even sitting in front of the radio with 45 =B0C inside the tent) can be
physically demanding. So if you don't want to fail, you have to be fit.
And my way to stay fit is: Walking.
What can you do? -- You may come to Belgium. We still need some cheer-
leaders for the second 50 km :-) But mainly you should support our campaign
with your donations. The most interesting way is to make your donation
dependent on how far we will go at the Dodentocht.
Just go to http://www.100-km.org/ and learn more about our campaign and
register to commit your willingsness to donate.
Thank you very much for your support! .... 73 Chris DL1MGB"
V5, NAMIBIA. Operator Hans/DF2UU and Hardy/DF3GY will be active as V55V

VK0H, HEARD ISLAND (Update). If you missed the special OPDX Bulletin last
week, it was announced that the DXpedition to Heard Island has been
rescheduled for January, 2015. The primary reason for this decision was
the cost of using the preferred vessel, the Marion Dufresne, to put the
team on Heard Island for the required time. In spite of extensive negoti-
ations and rescheduling of the cruise, it became clear that the cost of
using this vessel will exceed $1 million, and, therefore, the total cost
for the project would be about $1.5 million, as they noted earlier. In
spite of their plan to increase the team size to 50 (which the M-D can
accommodate) to partially cover this cost, they reluctantly concluded
that sponsorship at this level would be impossible. They have therefore
decided to delay the DXpedition to January 2015, to allow more time to
restructure the project, locate a more suitable vessel, and bring the
cost more in line with projected available resources.

ZS, SOUTH AFRICA (60m News). The "60m News" reports that the Independent
Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), South African's national
telecommunications regulator, has approved two 5 MHz frequencies for the
South African Radio League (SARL) to carry out propagation research. The
frequencies allocated are 5250 and 5260 kHz. These are 'center frequen-
cies', the 'USB Dial' frequencies being 1.5 kHz below this (i.e. 5248.5
and 5258.5 kHz). All modes are permitted (USB/CW preferred) with 3 kHz
maximum bandwidth. Maximum Power is 100W (400W PEP) measured at the output
of the radio. No antenna restrictions. The 5250 kHz channel is intended
for propagation experiments (e.g. SARL News Bulletin transmissions) and
5260 kHz for general contacts (this channel being common to a number of
countries). The licence is a pilot licence which has been purchased, so
the channels are private and licensed to the SARL who allow their members
to use the frequencies. Participating stations, who need to be SARL
members, must register. For further information and a list of registrants,
visit: http://www.amateurradio.org.za/propresearch.htm
