IDXC 64TH (VISALIA CONVENTION) NEWS (IOTA Dinner News Flash). Rick,
K6VVA, reports: "For any folks making late reservations for the Visalia
DX Convention, there may still be a few a few seats left for 'walk-ins'
at the IOTA Dinner on Friday evening, April 19th. Tnx to Phil Parton
(National Sales Manager) and Kenwood Communications, I am thrilled to
announce that the Grand Prize for the IOTA Dinner Raffle will now be a
new Kenwood TS-480HX (200 Watt) TXRX. This is the perfect IOTA Expeditioner
rig, and I now carry two of these on all my IOTA Expeditions. Having the
extra 3dB signal gain from a 200 Watt radio can sometimes make the
difference between a QSO being made or not when it is not possible to
take along an amplifier."

NOTES: The Perhentian Islands (Pulau Perhentian in Malay) lie
approximately 10 nautical miles (19 km) off the northeastern
coast of West Malaysia in the state of Terengganu, approx-
imately 40 miles (64 km) south of the Thai border. The name
"Perhentian" means "stopping point" in Malay, referring to the
islands' traditional role as a waypoint for traders between
Bangkok and Malaysia. The islands were sparsely inhabited by
fishermen for centuries, although tourism now accounts for
most economic activity. The Perhentian Islands appear on many
maps of the nineteenth and twentieth century as 'The Station
Islands'. This arises from the British colonial period, as an
           English translation of "stopping point".

SILENT KEYS......................
VE1AL - Alan Leith, became a Silent Key (SK) on the afternoon of April
11th, of an apparent heart attack. His daughter found him when
she came home from work in his shack. Al achieved the ARRL DXCC
#1 Honor Roll before North Korea (P5) was added to the DXCC
list, but was waiting for a chance to work that elusive P5. He
had 334/353 confirmed on the ARRL DXCC Mixed standings. Col,
MM0NDX, states, "CY9M 2012 would not have happened without Al's
enthusiasm and help. All the team is shocked and saddened at
Al's passing. On behalf of the CY9M team, it was a pleasure to
meet Al and spend some time with him."

VK6HD - Mike Bazley became a Silent Key (SK) on April 12th, after a
long fight with cancer. He was noted for being many station's
first 160 and 80 meter contact. Mike was the top Australian
operator on the current DXCC Honor Roll.

OPDX and its readers would like to send out our deepest sympathy to
the family and friends of the above mentioned.

TM114, FRANCE (IMD Op). Look for the Marconi special event station
TM114M to be on the air during the weekend of April 20th. The station
is celebrating the 114th anniversary of the first wireless radio link
between Wimereux, France, and South Foreland, England, on March 27th,
1899. QSL via F5JYD, by the Bureau or direct.

TO4, MARTINIQUE (IPA Op!). Operators Paul/FM5AM, Jean-Baptiste/FM5GI,
Valere/FM5CW, Claude/FM5CY and Henri/F6FLO (all members of the Inter-
national Police Association [IPA]) will use the special callsign TO4IPA
from St. Pierre between April 18th and May 2nd. Activity will be on CW,
SSB, RTTY and PSK. QSL via HA3JB. QSOs are valid for IPA Award.

UP44, KAZAKHSTAN (WFF/UNFF expedition). Members of the "Traveling Radio
Amateurs Group" plan to travel to the area of Tian-Shan Astronomical
Observatory between April 20-21st. During the group's expedition, they
plan to take part in the "International Astronomy Day" celebration and
activate the following reference numbers as UP44WFF:
         =95WAO/UNAO-01 - Tien-Shan Observatory (2700 m)
         =95WMA/UNM-037 - Tien-Shan Observatory (2700 m)
         =95WFF/UNFF-005 Ile-Alatau national Park
         =95KDA: Q - 13 (Talgar region)
         =95WW Loc.: MN83LB.
  Operators mentioned are Arthur/UN6QC, Sergey/UN6GAO and Victor/UN7GIT.
Activity will be on 40-10 meters including the WARC bands using SSB and
the Digital modes. Suggested SSB frequencies are: 7144, 14144, 14244,
18144, 21244, 24944 and 28544 kHz (+/- QRM). Digital frequencies will
be on the "Band Plan 1 Region". QSL via info and details on special
awards is available on QRZ.com.

VE3, CANADA (CISA Op/OQP). Team VE3ZF will be active from Twilight Island
(CISA ON-018), Manitoulin Island district, on April 20th and 21st, in the
Ontario QSO Party. The team will consist of Pat/VE3HZQ, Ron/VE3NDI and
Igor/VE3ZF. QSL via the Bureau or direct. Rules for the Ontario QSO Party
contest are posted at: http://cco.ve3xd.com/oqp/rules.htm

VP2E, ANGUILLA. Operators Rich/KE1B and YL Anna/W6NN will be active as
VP2EAQ and VP2EAR, respectively, from Anguilla between May 9-16th.
Activity will be "holiday-style" using a single station with 100w and
a Buddipole antenna system directly adjacent to the sea. Operations
will be on all bands 40-10 meters (including 30/17/12m), and all modes
(CW/SSB/RTTY). They expect to have Internet access, and plan to upload
logs to ClubLog daily. You can check your QSO status and request a QSL
card via the Online QSL Request System (OQRS). Direct QSLs are via their
home callsign (see QRZ.com for details).

VQ9/VQ93/VQ975, CHAGOS (Special Event). Jim, ND9M, is once again active
as VQ9JC from Diego Garcia until sometime in July. He is expected to use
the special callsign VQ975FOC during the month of May to celebrate the
75th anniversary of the FOC (First Class CW Operators' Club). Also, look
for Jim to be active as VQ93JC between June 22nd and July 7th. He usually
activates a unique/special prefix each year (last year it was VQ92JC).
As mentioned several months ago, Jim is operating Field Day style from
a recreational park using a FT-857 at 100 watts to a dipole at a height
of 10 meters because the VQ9 club station has been shut down. Jim reports
that he has to set up the station each time and then break it down each
day which further limits his operating time typically to 1230-1615z on
most days. Sometimes he is on Fridays starting as early as 0830Z. QSL
via ND9M.

WARD CERTIFICATE (Free!). For those who participate during the "World
Amateur Radio Day" on April 18th, 2013, and make a minimum of 200 QSOs,
can obtain a certificate. It is issued free of charge if requested in
electronic format (pdf). To get this certificate, you must send by May
18th, 2013, a log in ADIF format with 200 QSOs to: fenyo3jw (at) yahoo.com
More info is available at: http://wff-yo.blogspot.com

XW, LAOS. Steve, 9M6DXX, informs OPDX that a multi-national, multi-operator,
DXpedition to Vientiane, Laos, is being planned for September 6-16th, 2013.

active as ZK3N from Nukunonu Atoll (OC-048) between April 15-30th. Activity
will be on 80-10 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. They will be
using a TS590 with a Tokyo Hy-Power solid state amp; K3 with a 500 watt
solid state amp; AV640 and Tripod Leg for 40-10 and GP for 80m. QSL via
DL2AWG. Subject to a reliable Internet connection, they will upload their
log to ClubLog on a daily basis. Otherwise, the complete log will be
uploaded upon their return. There is a ZK3N Web page available at:
                          http://www.tokelau2013.de

ZS8, MARION ISLAND (More Ops Possible). Operators Carson/ZR6CWI (ZS8C)
and David/ZS1BCE (ZS8Z) reportedly have departed Cape Town on April 10th,
to head to Marion Island. It was announced this week that there may be
two more operators onboard the ship to Marion. Nadia (Carson's girlfriend)
and Marius (the team's diesel mechanic) are writing to the "Independent
Communications Authority of South Africa" (ICASA) for a RAE (Radio Amateur
Examination) to obtain a licence. Pierre, ZS1HF/ZS8M, has arranged with
the South African Radio League (SARL) to invigilate ['proctor'] the exam.
This means there will eventually be four active hams on Marion Island
during the next year. Carson and David are expected to be active around
mid-May once the ship departs with the old team back to Cape Town. As
mentioned in previous bulletins, activity will be on 40-10 meters (NO
160/80m) using mainly SSB and the Digital modes. QSL Manager is ZS1HF.
