1S/S1, PRINCIPALITY OF SEALAND (Once Claimed To Be A DXCC Entity). Do you
remember this one? A former UK anti-aircraft tower/fort (called Roughs
Tower) located in the North Sea was occupied by a retired army major Roy
Bates and his family in 1967. Major Bates declared the fort an independent
sovereign state from the UK and renamed it Sealand on September 2, 1967.
Bates established Sealand as a nation in 1975. Sealand had its own con-
stitution, flag, National Anthem, stamps, passports and currency. There
were even a few DXpeditions to Sealand - 1SLA1 (2000 by a Dutch group)
and S1A (1982 by a German group). However, it has been reported that Major
Bates passed away on October 9th, at the age of 91 in a care home in Leigh-
on-Sea, Essex, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. His wife Joan is now
expected to take over the rule of Sealand. Here are some interesting URLs
to read about the history and view pictures of the Principality of Sealand:

set up three amateur radio stations that can be run together on different
Amateur Radio bands. Mostly one on CW, one on SSB and the third running
special modes like RTTY and PSK31. They hope to use small 400 watt solid
state amplifiers for the CW and SSB stations. Activity will be on 160-6
meters using two 3 element Spiderbeams (20/17/15/12/10m), verticals for
40/30/20m, a Butternut HF2V for 160/80/40m and a Slim Jim for 6 meters.
QSL via HB9ACA direct or use the OQRS on ClubLog. The logs will be

other wire antennas. Radios will be an Icom 756 Pro II and a Elecraft K3
with two 400 watt amps. They will be on the the third floor of the hotel
with access to the roof 24/7 where the antennas will be. Tim, NL8F, will

CY0, SABLE ISLAND (Update/Press Release). The following was sent out on
October 8th [edited]: "Final preparations for the upcoming Sable Island
DXpedition are being completed. Canadian authorities have approved the
revised dates of October 22-31st. In order to minimize potential impact
to the migratory bird population on Sable Island, we have settled on
vertical dipole antennas made by 'GAP Antennas'. GAP has already shipped
five, pre-drilled, ready-to-go, mono-band vertical antennas for 10, 12,
15, 17, and 20 meters. These antennas should arrive in Halifax this week.
In addition, we are shipping back-up radio transceivers to Halifax on
Monday, October 8th. Extra freeze-dried meals are being shipped, as well,
in the event that our departure from Sable is delayed by weather conditions.
Now that Sable Island has become a national park, it is unclear what
limitations, if any, will be placed on future requests for group operations.
Even though, we are just a two-person team, we will do our best to provide
a new country or new band-country to those in need of CY0. As previously
advertised, our focus will be on 10m, 12m, and 15m, where the greatest
demand for Sable Island exists. For the latest updates, visit:

NH8, SWAINS ISLAND (Press Release). The following was posted on the NH8S
Web page <www.nh8s.org> on October 9th [edited]: "Craig and I would like
to thank everyone who worked us from Swains. We made 105,500 qso's which
made a lot of hams happy. This is not a record, but something we and the
team are very proud of. We had a great time but are glad to be back home
with our families.
This was truly a remarkable trip in many ways. We are very proud of
our team as they performed remarkably well under unbearable heat. As
you may know by now, it was 125° F on the beach in the sun. To put up
antennas in the loose sand and heat was quite a challenge. During the
duration of the trip, the crew walked many miles to get to the operating
stations four times a day. Then they worked the endless pileups, which
can be stressful. Never did they complain about the job before them,
making qso's in those hot tents. Every crew member experienced some type
of heat reaction at one time or another. Some members endured other
injuries as well, and two were hospitalized, so we had our challenges.
Everyone is home and fine now..
To Swains owners, the Jennings family, you and your group were an
enormous help to us. The Island support team of thirteen native men and
women worked tirelessly to see that our needs were met. We couldn't ask
for better hosts. Including the off-island support crew; it took a total
of 43 people to make this all happen.
QSL cards are ready to be printed and should be distributed in a few
months. If you need a card right away, please go to our OQRS link for
your QSL card.
We want to thank all of our equipment sponsors; your equipment worked
flawlessly. And to the foundations, clubs and individuals who helped
fund this trip, we are most appreciative of your generosity. These trips
to remote places are so expensive that it would not be possible without
your support.
It was a great honor for Craig and me to lead such an extraordinary
team of highly experienced operators. This was not the easiest trip any
of us have been on, and you guys are the greatest.
  Craig/K9CT and Joe/W8GEX Co-Leaders"

ON, BELGIUM. Berkin, TA3J, will be active as ON/TA3J from various
locations between December 7-11th. Activity will be on 160-2 meters
using SSB and FM. QSL via his home callsign.

out on October 8th [edited]: "DX friends of all over the World , we are
now very near the kick off of our new adventure, this time in V8 land.
All is going perfectly, and we are happy to report that the DXpedition

23 operators of 9 Countries, lead by Antonio/IZ8CCW and Gabriele/I2VGW

the beach of Pantai Seri Kenangan in Tutong and the second one from a
close hotel. The team will be running seven stations from 6 to 160
including 6 meters. We'll be on CW, SSB and RTTY around the clock from
November 11-23rd, and our aim is to take care of increasing number of
QSOs also outside EU, and also to use as many modes possible where the
country is most wanted. As we know so far, CW and RTTY modes are more
needed all around the world from Brunei Darussalam. We remind you that
V8 is also an IOTA reference (OC-88). For further info and to discover
how to support us, please see our Web site at <http://www.mdxc.org/v84smd>.

VC2, CANADA (Zone 2). Igor, VE3ZF, will be active as VC2X from Zone 2
during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 27-28th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/
High-Power entry. Igor will be operating from the small French-speaking
fishing village of Riviere-Au-Tonnerre, Northern Quebec. Before the
contest, he will use the VE3ZF/2 callsign. Igor informs OPDX, "I will
use a YAESU FTDX5000D, Kenwood TL922a, phasing verticals on low bands
and Spider beam on 14-21-28." QSL all callsigns via VE3ZF.

VP5/VQ5, TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS. Operators Bill/KX4WW, Noll/W9RN and
Doug/W4OX and Jim/K9PPY will be active as VQ5X during the CQWW DX SSB
Contest (October 27-28th) as a Multi-Single entry. QSL via W4OX or LoTW.
The team will be on the island between October 20-30th. Outside of the
contest, they will use VP5/homecall and be active on all bands 160-10
meters using CW, SSB and RTTY. There is a possibility they may be on
6 meters as well, but this will depend on how long it takes to finish
doing some tower maintenance which will determine if they will have
enough time to put together the 6m antenna and haul it up one of the
towers.

VQ92, CHAGOS ISLANDS. Jim, VQ9JC/ND9M, on Diego Garcia until mid-November,
informs OPDX that he will be using another special prefix callsign, VQ92JC
(nine two), between October 20th and November 4th. He states, "I'll be QRV
in the 1200-1600z time frame as much as possible during that calendar
window. This is the sixth consecutive year that I've been issued a unique
prefix. The only drawback is that I'm still operating Field Day style from
a recreational park. My station currently is a FT-857 at 100 watts to a
dipole at a height of 10 meters. I'll be on during the upcoming CQ WW SSB
contest. I've made a lot of calls and CQs on SSB, both in and outside of
contests, over the last several months, but very few ops have answered me.
No doubt it's largely because prop condx aren't very good and because of
my station limitations, so I don't know how good my SSB effort in the WW
will be. I'm scheduled to return to the States just after that." QSL via
ND9M.

YS, EL SALVADOR. Operators Mario/YS1GMV, Mario/YS1MAE and members of the
Club de Radio Aficionados de El Salvador (CRAS) will be active as YS1YS
during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 27-28th) as a Multi-Single entry.
QSL via YS1GMV.

Z8, SOUTH SUDAN. Diya, Z81D, has been very active the past week on 40/20/
15/12/10 meters SSB at various time. Sometimes via a list operation.
Suggest to watch or search QSNs on the DXCluster. QSL via OM3JW.

ZD8, ASCENSION ISLAND. Marko, N5ZO, will once again be active as ZD8O
from Ascension Island (AF-003) during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October
27-28th) as a Single-Op/All-Band entry. QSL via OH0XX. Marko will be
active between October 18-30th "as time allows from setting up field
day operation."

ZF2, CAYMAN ISLANDS. Pete, K8PGJ, will be active as ZF2PG on Grand
Cayman (NA-016) during the week of January 12-20th. Activity (when not
diving) will occur on 20 to 15 meters SSB during the morning and early
afternoon on weekdays. He will be operating in the NAQP Contest on 20
and 40 meters. QSL via his home callsign or LoTW.

ZL7, CHATHAM ISLANDS. Jim, ZL1LC, is currently planning to be active as
ZL7LC from Chatham Islands (OC-038) between March 21-27th. Activity will
be mainly PSK only. More details will be forthcoming.

ZV7, BRAZIL (Special Event). Look for several Brazilian operators to
activate special event station ZV7O between November 17-18th. Activity
will take place during the "FLIPORTO 2012" (Festa Literßria Internacional
de Pernambuco) <http://www.fliporto.net/fliporto2012/en/fliporto-2012>.
The special ZV7O station will be on the air from the FLIPORTO event doing
a public demonstration of amateur radio using different bands and modes.
A special award (see QRZ.com) will be issued upon request to the Award
Manager for contacts with ZV7O on two different bands or two different
modes, at no cost. A colored QSL card will be printed to confirm all
contacts made by ZV7O. QSL via PY7JN.
