5W & KH8, SAMOA AND AMERICAN SAMOA (ZK3 Cancelled!). John, N7CQQ, sent
out the following press release on September 9th [edited]: "Well gang,
we have thrown in the towel on getting to Tokelau (ZK3) this time around.
The boat is normally scheduled for a two week turn around with about two
days to get to and two days to return from Tokelau. This month the boat
scheduled to go to Tokelau was tasked to do another cruse and another
boat was substituted from New Zealand. The weather has delayed the arrival
of the substituted boat from New Zealand, so we still don't know when the
boat to Tokelau will depart Apia, Western Samoa. But wait the story gets
better!
The return boat trip is 'Scheduled' for departure from Apia, WS, on
September 18th. The return date to Apia, WS, after picking us up at
Tokelau is September 29th give or take weather and the changing schedule.
The scheduled flight returning Ron/N6XT and John/N7CQQ back home is
scheduled out of American Samoa on October 1st. So we have given up our
attempt to visit Tokelau this trip. We will continue to operate 5W and
KH8 when we return to AS about the 19th or 20th of September to see the
Swains guys return. We have lots of information to share about visiting
Samoa and Tokelau.
73, de John/5W0QQ and Ron/5W0XT see you in the pile up and still
   having fun in the Pacific."

ADDED NOTES: There has been plenty of SSB activity by John and Ron
on 20 meters. John also mentioned to OPDX on Friday, "We just finished
installing the SteppIR Big vertical at the Samoa Marina Hotel, they
are nice folks. Had some difficulty with power strips, 120v power
strips don't work well on a 220 volt system... Got a great internet
connection so should be able to stay in touch." =

CQ NEWS. Richard, W2VU, sent the following press release on September 4th:
"CQ News: Bob Cox, K3EST, Retires as CQWW Contest Director - Bob Cox,
K3EST, has retired as Director of the CQ World Wide DX Contest and as
CQ's Director of Contesting, it was announced today by CQ Publisher Dick
Ross, K2MGA. Cox has been at the helm of the CQWW for 35 years, guiding
the contest through massive changes in technology - both on and off the
air - and CQWW's growth to become the world's most popular amateur radio
contest.
Cox first took the reins of the CQWW in January, 1977, along with Larry
Brockman, WA6EPQ (now N6AR), who worked with Bob until March, 1994. In
making his announcement to members of the CQ World Wide Contest Committee,
Bob said, '35 years encompasses almost the entire history of modern
contesting. All the way from paper logs to today's need for instant
answers. During that time a framework was created that made the CQWW the
innovator of almost everything used in contesting today including log
checking.' He added, 'With that in mind=85I am tired and wish to move on
with other interests.'
Ross said the association had been long and fruitful, telling Cox 'it
has been an honor to have worked with you for these many decades. Your
contributions to the art and sport of amateur radio contesting have been
enormous.'
Cox's retirement is effective immediately. A successor has not yet
been named."

CU1-CU9, AZORES (Press Release - Dated September 4th)[edited]). Martti,
Laine, OH2BH, sent out the following:
DXERS TAKING A NEW COURSE IN AZORES, SEPTEMBER 28-30, 2012
           NEW WEBSITE GOES LIVE http://azores-islands-hunt.com

It is often said that DXers only work DX. More recently, we have seen
a healthy shift toward assisting the society they visit by helping locals
become stronger in Amateur Radio. Something totally new is now happening
in the CU-land =96 the Azores.
In recent years, the Azores Islands have balanced their agriculture and
livestock sectors through increased awareness of their great location
and unique landscape facilitated by the development of the local infra-
structure to receive more visitors from industrialized countries. Signif-
icant progress has been made in expanding tourist facilities, convention
hotels and holiday resorts. The Azores is now capable of accommodating
10,500 visitors per day. Additionally, the Azorean airline (SATA) is set
to serve many European destinations in addition to the US and Canada.
Radio amateurs are now stepping forward to help the Azoreans increase
the awareness of all of their nine islands, all within reach of SATA
airline service. Forming nine country teams with the locals, a total of
twenty DXers will fly in from SATA destinations to be on the air from
the nine islands as part of the 'Azores Nine Islands Hunt' - a unique
concept to bring everyone on board globally to share what the Azores can
offer. Those participating are:

  United States: K2DO (YL), KI1U, KE3Q, N2GA
  Canada: VE3DZ, VE3FWA
  Germany: DJ9ZB, DF9TF
  United Kingdom: G3TXF, G7VJR
  Finland: OH2BH, OH8NC, OH9MDV
  Norway: LB3HC
  Belgium: ON7LX (YL), ON7TK, ON5NT
  Denmark: OZ7AM, OZ1IKY
Together with local hams from each island: CU1AAD, CU2BV, CU2CE, CU2DX,
  CU3CS, CU4AB, CU5AM, CU6AB, CU7CA, CU8AAE and CU9AC

The Amateur Radio group is also set to streamline emergency communic-
ations procedures throughout the archipelago. Together with the local
amateur population and administrators, they will be using this activity
to test the island-to-island amateur radio network. The ARRL is sending
their best resources, lending their expertise in this field.

The project website was launched today at <http://azores-islands-hunt.com>
for your review while you can also study the Azores at:
                        http://www.visitazores.com/en "

CY0, SABLE ISLAND (Update). The following was a press release dated
September 5th [edited]: "Planning continues for the October 8-17th DX-
pedition to Sable Island (CY0). Half of our gear is in storage at the
Maritime Air Charter facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We are in the
process of shipping the remaining gear. We have booked our flights to
Halifax. All remains on schedule for the CY0 operation to begin around
2300z on October 8th. As always, weather and flying conditions will
dictate the actual schedule. The aircraft has to land on the beach as
there is no "runway" on the island.
This operation will be highly focused on 10,12 and 15 meters where the
most demand for CY0 exists. We continue to discuss antenna options due
to the restrictive environment we will be operating under.
Ron and Murray will begin loading the Britten-Norman aircraft late in
the afternoon on October 7th. All gear must be weighed as we have a 1400
pound weight limitation, including our body weights. We will then watch
the weather very closely. On Monday morning, October 8th, Maritime Air
and the OIC on Sable have scheduled a 1200z call to determine if a flight
is GO/NO GO. More updates to follow.... WA4DAN/CY0 and AA4VK/CY0"
For more details and updates, visit: http://www.cy0dxpedition.com

HS, THAILAND (Yaesu Presents Radios to HS0AC in Thailand)). Press release
from Dennis Motschenbacher, K7BV, received on September 3rd: "I depart
Thailand early Tuesday morning after a number of days of DX pileups
along side some of the most enthusiastic and friendly hams in the world!
I will never forget my time here to present two Yaesu FT 2000D radios
(thanks to Yaesu President Mr. Jun Hasegawa) to the Radio Amateur Society
of Thailand headquarters station HS0AC that lost their radios during the
terrible floods last year.
       http://www.qsl.net/rast/
       http://www.hs5ac.net/smf1112/smf/index.php?topic=3D749.0
I was delighted to find Thailand extremely "radio active" with over
300,000 hams; most on VHF. However, after seven years of waiting, the
Thai hams are once again able to test for a license that gives them the
HF bands. Over 40 have already passed the exam this year and at least
one more test is schedule in 2012. I understand that upgrade testing
will likely now occur three times a year meaning 100s of new HF operators
are about to appear on the HF bands. =

All this is great news for hams around the world!
