Hi Peter and all,
I call the Bendix that because it was made by Bendix Aircraft Division
and was commonly used aboard the B-29 among others but it's better known
as a "Navy key" since that design was in common maritime use until CW was
dropped in the late '90s. Too bad I can't find any pictures of one so if
I happen to think of digging it out sometime I'll use my crappy webcam
and send you a picture of it.
A knee key is what you make of it, I've never seen a commercial product.
One of mine came as such, someone bent a piece of sheet metal and
attached two strips so it fit around the lower thigh and mounted a key to
it. I have little doubt Andy G0FTD is an expert making them, you can read
about his Shopping Trolly Wally on the Southgate ARC web site. I think a
while back he mentioned something about attracting crowds on the beach
here on packet, maybe he'll chime in if this thread catches his attention.
I've heard of the McElroy but no image comes to mind but if you had one
made at the shop wouldn't it be a Coggon key? (;->) Cummon Pete, if it's
not brass it's not a key, it's a J-38. Uh oh, I'm about to have a fistful
of dits tossed at me, that's a popular model and just to deflect a few I
have one made by Lionel of Newark NJ. I couldn't resist when I saw it
lying about at a hamfest, being a rail fan it recognized me and just
reached out and grabbed me.
Oh, please don't call it an "up and down key" or the brass pounders will
kill you come next New Years Eve. It's STRAIGHT KEY NIGHT and don't you
forget it! (;->) 1970-71 was another story entirely, that was The Night
Of The Slime-O-Tron.... "a date that will live in infamy" but it's more
than the 6k limit. (;->)
