Hi Peter and all,
Nope, CW isn't about to go away with all the new ops learning and using
it. Dispite the name caller dropping the license requirement hasn't
changed a thing except learning and forgetting having no interest in it.
Counting those praising the fact they WANTED to learn I'd say the scene
has greatly improved.
I don't remember 12 O'Clock High except for the title but I have seen
several movies showing the radioman with his key and headphones. I have a
pair BTW and they're ever so comfortable and for communications audio
they're superb. Oh, how could a fighter pilot work a stick, guns and a
key at the same time? That's a neat trick! Uh, the mode was AM. (;->)
US railways at least were the only ones to actually use Morse code,
transatlantic cables led to the development of Continental code adopted
by radiotelegraphers so both sides of the pond could understand each
other. When I was a kid I used to hang out in the tower at a major
railway interlocking where the key and sounder were shoved into a corner
gathering dust. By the 60s they were using telephone and radio and the
telegraphy sets were disconnected. I used to have a small collection of
railway keys, sounders and repeaters, don't know where it all got off to
but it's a safe bet they're worth a bundle these days but I'd never
willingly give up one heavy brass armature if for nothing else but to
keep the frogs in line.
Don't remind me of the dentist, I've had my share of rides on The Pain
Train to the office in Long Branch. When I get home the last thing on my
mind is packet, after a pain killer trip to La La Land I can't find the
computer and really have no interest in searching. As long as I don't
lose the TV remote I'm OK.
Indy cracks me up and then there was Ray's one liner, yeah he has his
moments too. Packet must be the most fun mode of all, some strange cross
between a box of chocolates and a can of mixed nuts. Trolley Wally, yeah,
600VDC and no brakes. (;->)
