Re no more CQ'ing, well certainly have not seen any as a bulletin on
packet lately?
But even worse the good old CQ seems lost on HF, except when a
contest is on, but with most calling CQ Contest!
However I think it is a great pity the way ham radio has gone, with
practically no use being made of 40 and 80m except for isolated nets,an
odd contest or an outbreak of good conditions!
I have a feeling that the convention of calling CQ is not taught in
courses such as Foundation etc, so young ones have no idea of how to get a
contact.
VK has a wonderful range of 144 and UHF repeaters, but these are silent
for 90% of their possible up time and hopeless to call CQ.
Even on Echolink you can try all the VK nodes/calls that are up
and even those linked to a simplex or repeater, but 99% do not respond. It
is interesting that some are permanently linked to an overseas site and
wonder if this is legal?
Also though the new trend seems to be that a Club will have a weekly net
and 8 or so members will come out of the woodwork, but on close of the net
they are not heard again till the next net.
There seems however that older members of clubs still prefer going to a
monthly meeting rather than coming on air!
What is happening to Amateur radio and what is the answer?
