First, a brief history lesson about the War of the Roses which raged
from 1455 - 1485, then the story about the new Yorkshire Flag, unfurled
in Hull this week, then taken by walkers to arrive in York today - Friday
1st August - Yorkshire Day (Which few Yorkshiremen will be aware of, and
most will care even less about).

But some do care about these things, especially where flags are involved.

First, the War of the Roses:

For thirty years, a bitter struggle for the English throne was waged
between two branches on the same family, the House of York and the
House of Lancaster, both descended from Edward lll.

Each house was represented by a rose - the House of York used a white
rose, the House of Lancaster used a red rose. The division between the two
families became known as The Wars of the Roses.

The first fighting broke out in May 1455.

The War of the Roses ended when Henry Tudor - a Lancastrian, defeated King
Richard III, a Yorkist at the battle of Bosworth Field on 22 August 1485.

So really, if today's Yorkies want to fly a flag more than 500 years
later, they ought to fly it at half-mast as the Yorkies lost and
Lancastrians won.

After the battle, Henry Tudor became King Henry Vll of England and Wales.

Henry Vll (representing the Lancaster family) married Elizabeth of York
(representing the York family) and this marriage united the two families.
Henry created the Tudor rose, containing both the White Rose of York and
the Red Rose of Lancaster. It symbolized the end of a struggle between
York and Lancaster, and they all lived happily ever after.

Well, not really.

White rose flags are often seen in people's from gardens in Yorkshire, but
there's been a spate of incidents in recent years when householders flying
flags celebrating their Yorkshire roots were warned against it by council
"jobsworths" - "more than my jobs worth to let you fly that flag in your
own front garden". (And remember, the householders pay these guys wages
through their local taxes to serve them - not to boss them about).

In one case a North Yorkshire farmer was issued with a summons by Ryedale
Council until the case was dropped after a local campaign.

So, if a flag isn't legal, all it takes is a bit of paper sent of to
another bunch of jobsworths - the UK Flag Institute and get it made
legal.

It all makes work for the non-working working class. Now that people
in the UK are no longer employed in making thing, they're employed in
making a fuss instead.

So, Yorkshire now has its own dedicated flag following a special unfurling
ceremony in Hull earlier this week. Now that the flag has been registered
with the UK Flag Institute it means anyone wanting to fly it from their
rooftop no longer needs to apply for planning permission first (which
wouldn't have been granted anyway).

The new flag was unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Hull and Admiral of the
Humber, Councillor Elaine Garland. A series of walkers carried the flag
to York where it is scheduled to arrive on Friday - Yorkshire Day.

So the Yorkies might have lost the battle Bosworth in 1485,
but they've won the battle of the jobsworths in 2008.

Well it's a start.

Quote of the day:

                  "Patriotism"

"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is
superior to all others because you were born in it".

(George Bernard Shaw, Irish Playwright and Essayist.
1925 Nobel Prize for Literature, 1856-1950)
