I did just that many moons ago on an MSX computer.
(Who remembers the MSX, it was mean't for home use whereas the PC was meant
 for business).

I loaded a number of frames into various pages of video memory and then
switched the various frames in sequence to be the visible video frame.
It worked a treat - much faster than trying to load images just into
the active (visible) video page.
This process works with even a very slow main processor as the main job
is all done within the video processor.
The downside is that the command set for one video processor may not be
the same as another.
Get the data-sheet for YOUR video processor and give it a try.
I used BASIC as the programming language and just POKED values into the
transfer registers to the video processor. All very easy and simple when
you suss it all out.
