Hi Paula ,

Hello Paula, Matt and many others.
To answer your question, there are about 320 active BBS
this time (mid-december 2013) in the world.
This can vary not only due to the creation of new bbs
( Jnos , bpqmail ) mainly in the USA and Canada , but also by
the disappearance of old bbs which fatigues not seeing the true
mail traffic pass through the packet , close their systems .
This figure has nothing to do with that of the 1990s , or in my
department could have 10 BBS (100 kms north / south) and roughly
more than 700 BBS in France . To date I can only enumerate 12 .
I for several months now conducts a census of "visible" BBS
in routing pages WP . I intend to also post on a
WEBpage this list that is not easy to maintain .
In the meantime I 'll send 7plus parts to satisfy your curiosities .
Big problem : as you were able to realize this, a number of
bbs have reappeared , the sysop has returned to service messaging software
but forgetting to purge old newsletters ( dating back 5 or 10 years) and
we have seen flourish in the WP Winfbb or OBCM of bbs who closed or whose
holders have long been call passes SK .
Ditto for those who repair their bbs with no backup epure , dating from
several years ...
So do not take this list as being strictly correct, the WP
@ WW sent are too often corrupt and distort the census.
This being so , it is with pleasure that we have seen (and helped some)
the re-appear in bbs as vk7ax , vk4tub , ve2rxy , ct1eni , sv1uy and a
new bbs ON3PCB ! I salute the way and very grateful to keep their systems
alive !
The hardest work remains to be done sysops : FINDING USERS !
I will deal promoting HAM during meetings , as well as
showing to those who are qrv with APRS packet in the AX25 is also
was something else ... ( Bbs + dxclusters accessible via RF)
The identification of bbs is not easy to do because many " RULES "
established for proper operation of packet radio are no longer met .
I want non-compliance routings for evidence used to determine
GEOGRAPHICAL the routing :
@ ww
@ eu
@ af
@ as
@ oc
@ na or Naom
@ sa or soam
@ ceam
Here .. these are the only and unique areas of valid @routing .
After that, each country or area to adapt and add @gbr or @ita
but note that ita & gbr are in anyway @ eu ...
Note that the WP should be sent as adjacent BBS and not @WW !
Many new sysops have not read or understood the documentation and see
now appear behind the @ invraissemblables of things that deserve
to be put in rejection.
Unfortunately the damage is done and there is no turning back.
For us " old- timers " , it is up to us to adapt and evolve to
packet radio , and adjust the rules according to what the world
net can provide as an influence (positive or negative) overlooked our
(former) communication systems .
I see plenty of passing msgs @ita or @arrl or @latnet that time of bbs
accessible only by radio would pass long to be filtered here in France .
Reading some of these msgs can realize that messages are quite consistent
with our ham occupations and even if they are intended to close range ,
they are anyway a great interest in our hobby.
In doubt that the sender does not know to use this means of communication
I agree and validate these bulls which are very helpful on our bbs .
For the packet radio does not disappear , it is indeed necessary that
we (sysops) maintain our bbs in service , did evolve our applications
AX25 which are now accessible via telnet and should be required be consulted
on Web pages .
I see it, it is not easy for us to invest as former while in a WEB server
packet radio still works in some servers in DOS .. yes , there is .
Our role is to maintain this passion with our know-how , as well as
retransmit to "new-comers" knowledge sometimes a little too been exceeded by
the progression to "all digital " .
Those who have already hang there passion for radio , there is not much left
thing to put them on the right track.
QRO 73s and Good luck ... Long live the packet radio ....
