Very simple and intuitive. You won't have any issues... and if you do, the
Yahoo group will be your best friend!

2a. accessing APRSIS with D710?

Does anyone know, while using the D710 (or any of the other Kenwoods for that matter), when beaconing, do messages get automatically sent to (and received from) APRSIS or do I need to add this to my path?
I guess I'm not totally clear on how I can text message through the APRS internet system. Direct vehicle->vehicle or vehicle->digi
->vehicle doesn't seem to be a problem.
Also, do the messages sit and wait until the addressee connects or is there a decay time? Is there a way to set the decay time to "never decay" if needed?
Perhaps the trouble is that not all digis connect to APRSIS or WINlink.
Just need a bit of clarity here.
Tnx, 73

John (brace yourself for a long answer to a short question),
Provided that there are IGates within RF earshot (direct or via Digis),
any and all packets you transmit will be gated onto the APRS-IS and will
be transported around the world. There are numerous APRS-IS
monitoring/viewing sites, but my personal favorite happens to be
http://aprs.fi.
The APRS-IS proper is simply a real-time distribution pipe. There is
nothing inherent in the -IS that buffers, stores, nor even interprets
APRS packets (much). The web sites that you might encounter to view
APRS data are each listening to the APRS-IS in realtime and are doing
their own collecting, filtering, interpreting, and storing of that data.
So, what about messaging? Here's the fun part. Every APRS-IS IGate
maintains a list of "locally" heard stations. This may be only directly
heard stations over the RF or is typically configurable to include
stations up to N (digi) hops away. This list is also timed so it can be
thought of as a list of "recently" heard "local" stations. At the same
time, the IGate is monitoring the APRS-IS stream for APRS message
packets. When it encounters one, it checks the destination of that
message against the list of recently heard local stations. If there's a
hit, the APRS message packet is wrapped in a third-party packet and
gated to RF.
However, this ONLY works if the IGate operator has configured his/her
IGate to gate messages from -IS to RF and s/he has transmitting
capability at the IGate and there's an RF path from the IGate back to
the destination station. That's a lot of variables that have to align
to work. And, unfortunately (IMHO), there's way too many receive-only
IGates in the world (at least, in the US). I'm guilty of having run my
IGate as receive-only until I realized what confusion I was adding to
the local network. Packets would show up in -IS from -RF, but yet
messaging back out to those stations would not work. As soon as I
learned that, my IGate became bi-directional.
So, when using ANY APRS station on RF, if you are within range of an
IGate, the whole world can see your packets. You can send messages to
any of the APRS-IS-resident services (like CQSRVR
(http://www.aprs.org/cqsrvr.html) and WHO-IS
(http://www.aprs-is.net/WhoIs.aspx)) or any other APRS (-IS or RF) user
world-wide.
And, if you're in range of a bi-directional IGate, anyone around the
world can send messages to you knowing only your call-sign.
As for buffering and retrying and stuff like that, the short answer is
no. On the RF side, APRS clients are supposed to implement a
re-transmission decaying algorithm until and ACK is received (which
won't happen without the appropriate IGates), but many of them don't,
however I believe the Kenwoods do. But if the destination station is
not on-line or in range to receive your message when you transmit it,
there is no buffered delivery at a later time (at least, not yet, I'm
working on some ideas).
That said, there is also an EMAIL-2 server
(http://www.aprs-is.net/Email.aspx) which will gate APRS messages to an
e-mail address, but e-mailing back to an APRS client is problematic.
There's supposedly some servers that do something in that line, but I'm
not personally familiar with them.
Anyway, I hope this answers your question (and then some). Others will
also hopefully benefit from this diatribe and will give their APRS
messaging a try!
I have an APRS-IS client on-line nearly all the time. You can send a
message to KJ4ERJ-12 and should at least get an ack and possibly a
response from me if I'm anywhere near my cellphone at the time!

Dear Lynn,
That is a very well done in depth answer to my questions. Obviously, since I am trying your APRSISCE on my phone too, I have been trying to see what works and what doesn't here in the Albany NY area. One reason for this is that I will be putting on an APRS progam soon for a few local clubs and perhaps local officals too. That said, I am trying to learn as much as much as I can, beyond just beaconing. I believe the better I understand it, the better I can teach it ;-)
Thanks and 73
