Subject: [illinoisdigitalham] SWO Digital and Technical Symposium
The 22nd annual Southwest Ohio Digital and Technical Symposium will
be held from 8 AM to approximately 4:30 PM EST, Saturday, January 12,
2008 in Thesken Hall, on the Middletown Campus of Miami University,
Middletown, Ohio.
Symposium planners have issued a "call for papers" and
presenters. If you have a particular related subject of interest
which you'd like to present, or know of someone who is qualified to
present, please contact Jay Slough, K4ZLE <K4ZLE@ARRL.net>.
If you have not attended previously, here's some additional
information. This symposium is unusual in that there are no
attendance fees, there is no flea market and there is no commercial
sponsorship. It is not a way to raise money; rather, it is a way to
raise the knowledge level of ham radio-related technology. In
addition to the formal presentations, informal sharing of information
is encouraged through a demonstration room and one-on-one
conversations and small group discussions.
Mark your calendar now and plan to attend the 22nd Annual Southwest
Ohio Digital and Technical Symposium on Saturday, January 12,
2008. Check http://www.swohdigi.org/ for future updates on the agenda.

"You have to think about the cost of running your equiptment 24-7,"
A very good reason to use a small, old, dedicated low power box for the IGate. I
know someone who still uses a 386/SX computer for a faxback system--because it
has enough power to run that job and that job itself full time. These days, it
probbaly begs the issue for someone to develop an IGate that would run on a
Windows Mobile or Palm type handheld--they've got a lot of brains compared to
old computers, and very low power draw.

It could be done with a smaller device than that, really. One of these
days I'll build an IGate with an embedded Ethernet module, if someone
doesn't beat me to it. Not that there's a huge market for them, but I
need them for commercial projects anyway.
With OpenTRAC it's particularly easy, since it's UDP and you don't even
need to worry about maintaining a TCP connection with a host. You just
spit out packets and don't worry if a fraction of a percent get lost
along the way.
Even regular APRS IS format shouldn't be too hard, since you can get
modules with all of the brains required to do Telnet.
