1ref: If you feel a need for an I-GATE in your area and your area hams are agreeable I would guess it would be ok. You have to think about the cost of running your equiptment 24-7, and internet connections. If money is not a problem go to it. best of luck 73s KA3BFY JERRY

Subject: [APRS] Need for iGates?

How does one know when it is beneficial to set up an iGate in a
certain area? I am in Northwest Colorado and my packets go all the way
to central Utah before being iGated. So, I was thinking of installing
an iGate at my home. Do you think it would be a good idea?

Thanks and 73,
Alex AB0TJ

For most tracking iGates are the final RF destination and help to
prevent the digi bounce-around and get the signal to APRS servers
faster. If you have 50 miles or more to other iGates in any compass
quarter, putting one up will be an asset. All you need is a decent
real-time internet connection (DSL or cable will do), a pc, TNC (TNC-X
will do), a radio (a handheld is OK) and a decent antenna. Take a look
at my setup: http://www.abri.com/sq2000/GPStrack.html

Digis have advantages at some locations - like remote mountaintops
with no internet access - you could even run it off solar panels.
