I didn't realise the two systems had been combined, nor that APRS was even
open to the general public's use. As said in my original SB - it has been a
few years since I last looked at APRS.

I already have one, thanks.

There lies a problem. The software I using only has an option to enter an ID,
which I assumed to be my callsign (?). There is no provision to enter a
password, though the server and port can be changed.

Thanks for the explanation Ray. Probably my best way forward would be to ask
the author of the program to include provision for the password.
