Thanks for your comments Scott -

I borrowed a few of them and sent in a quick comment.

Isn't that really a closed-minded view about closed-source? hi hi

2. APRS for Rovers during contest
    Posted by: "k5omc" k5omc@yahoo.com k5omc

Hello,
I have heard that the ARRL may start requiring the rovers to have APRS
to post their position during contest on VHF and higher frequencies. If
that is so I need to know more about it so I can be ready because I
rover from time to time. I usally take a reading from my Explorist 300
which is not interfacable with a PC and log it.
Can I enter my Lat/Lon mannually or do I have to up grade my GPS? I
only know I need a PC and a GPS coordinates. I don't know what software
to run or mode on the rig to select.
Can someone assist me on this and will it load the system down during
contest weekend and work properly?

There exists a Perl script written by Ian, the APRS spec editor,
that decodes lots of APRS packets. You should be able to snag the
bits of code out of it. I have a copy if you can't find it with a
quick Google search. I think it might be on tapr.org somewhere.

Nope, no battery. The out-of-production PocketTracker could have a
9V battery inside the Altoids tin with the transmitter/TinyTrak
unit, and some of the newer all-in-one devices like the RTrak might
have that capability (haven't checked), but the standard
OpenTrackers and TinyTrak units don't have any batteries at all.
