Scott - you give a VERY good response - thank you for your open minded
view on this. Just wish everyone was that way.

2. Mark Miller FCC Petition

With full recognition that any modification to the complex FCC rules
covering amateur radio is bound to have unfavorable consequences for
one part of the fraternity or another, it seems to me, as a "steath
station operator" that rule making which preserves certain portions
of the HF bands for narrow band data communications is a favorable
objective.
With reference to my data on the throughput and copy accuracy on
various digital modes as reported in the 26th ARRL/TAPR DCC
Proceedings, some of the available digital modes appear to use
increased bandwidth more effectively than others but the narrow band
modes appear to be quite adequate for "antenna limited"
(i.e. "stealth") operations.
True, one can use a good filter to get away from the "blanking"
effect of a strong local wide band digital station operating closely
adjacent to narrow band digital mode communications but one wonders
if that should really be necessary given the band options that are
readily available.
For what it is worth.

Hi Everyone. I am debating between buying an OpenTracker+ or the
TinyTrak3. Have anyone used either one of these and would like to
share their thoughts? and recommendations? Thanks in advance!

The OpenTracker+ is my creation so I might be just a bit biased, but
I'll give you a quick summary of why I think the OT1+ is a better deal
than the TT3.
First, firmware updates are free and easy to get. It takes a few
seconds to select the firmware image you want (standard tracker, KISS
TNC, Peet Bros WX, 1-wire WX, etc) and download it straight from the
Internet to the tracker with just a null-modem cable - no need to pull
the processor or have a special programming device.
Second, it's got receive capability. The TinyTrak4 will have this as
well, but I don't think it's done yet. In tracker mode, received
positions get sent to the GPS receiver as NMEA (and Magellan) waypoints,
so the stations show up on your GPS screen, assuming your GPS receiver
supports NMEA input.
The receive capability also lets you use the tracker as a very simple
KISS TNC. It hasn't got a ton of buffer space and it's not the most
sensitive TNC out there, but it works well enough that they've been used
in IGates.
The OT1+ has a larger regulator than the TT3 (the same type as the
TT3Plus actually) so it's able to power a 5-volt GPS receiver directly.
Oh yeah, it also gives you temperature and voltage telemetry from
on-board sensors. And if you're so inclined (and comfortable with C
programming), you can download the complete source code and make your
own modifications.
There's a lot more, including some more obscure telemetry functions that
won't interest the average user, and there's very little the TT3 does
that the OT1+ doesn't.
Both the n1vg.net and argentdata.com sites are in the middle of a major
restructuring right now, so here's the product page in case you have
trouble finding it:
https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=65
And here's a somewhat out-of-date brochure from Dayton:
http://n1vg.net/opentracker/OpenTracker_flyer.pdf
It's also $6 cheaper than the TT3Plus kit (bulk discounts are available
=]) and, in my opinion anyway, easier to assemble.
Let me know if you have any questions.
73,
Scott

I've used both extensively and am strongly in favour of the OpenTracker.
Main reason is that the TinyTrak is prone to locking up in the presence of
strong RF, which can get into it via the GPS cable etc. Filtering (extensive
in my case - with metal boxes, chokes on inputs etc. etc.) has only been
partly successful. OT has never locked up, even deliberately trying.
The OT firmware also just feels more mature and complete, with the TT having
annoying quirks.
My use has been in emergency comms, so both have had plenty of "harsh" real
world testing.
No connection with either, jut a very happy OT user!!
