2a. Getting GPS signal to the TM-D710 from my laptop
Posted by: "Rohitash Singh" rohitashs(AT)gmail.com rohitashs
Date: Thu Sep 3, 2009 11:36 am ((PDT))

Hi,

I have the Viliv X70 with a built in GPS running XP. I have APRSPoint
running on this and it successfully connects to the D710 for receiving APRS
packets as well as transmitting position info. I use a two port USB to
serial cable (from Cables Unlimited) with one of the ports connected to the
PG-5G cable. The built in GPS on the X70 is available on COM2 and I use
xport to split it to COM3, 4 and 5. APRS point receives the GPS feed on COM5
and it works well. I've also used MapPoint 2009 independently getting the
GPS signal on COM3 and that works fine too.

Now is there a way to get the GPS signal to the D710 directly? The reason I
want to do this is so I can use the D710s APRs features to transmit my
position. I used to have a GPSMap 478 connected to the D710 earlier and was
very happy with the way the D710 handled position updates. Being brand new
to APRSPoint, I've not been very successful in having it automatically keep
my positions updated. If I could get the GPS signal to the radio then I'd
have both options available.

What I'm thinking is some software that could 'redirect' the GPS signal from
one of the com ports to another com port. That way maybe I could use the
second port of the USB-Serial cable and wire it into a home made cable to
the GPS port on the D710.

Feasible? Suggestions?

I'm cross posting this to multiple forums so apologize if some of you get
duplicates.

The GPS is built-in to my computer. Its NMEA data stream is available on
COM2 which is an internal port - ie is not available physically on the
computer as an external port. I have got a dual port USB to Serial cable
and I'm using one of those ports (available as COM 5 in my computer) to
connect to the TNC on the D710. I'm trying to figure out if there is a
way to redirect the NMEA signal on COM2 to the second port of my USB to
Serial cable (COM6 on my computer).
Then I could build a home made cable to connect between the DB2 plug on
the USB-Serial cable and the GPS port on the Radio.
I'm trying to avoid buying a second GPS device just to connect to the radio.
