You might have noticed several messages that just came through to AMSAT-BB
after delays of up to a few days. Sorry about that. I was unexpectedly away
from any usable internet connection and couldn't keep up with the usual
maintenance work for the mailing list.

However, the IC-7800 doesn't stop working after 3 weeks.

The space and mass required for the fuel and attitude control system would be
prohibitve. CubeSats are better solution for a communications satellite as you
get 10 years of 20 minute passes rather than 3 weeks of 10 minute passes. A 3U
CubeSat might barely have enough space for an engine, attitude control and
fuel but you'd end up with something like Arsene (AO-24).

Hi Jean-Fran?ois

Thanks for your suggestions. Still not working. I have even moved the
doppler.sql
file from the DATA_Repair directory. Also I have removed all the entries
except
one, just in case there is an error in one of the lines I am not using. My
Doppler.SQF file is shown below.

I'm at my wits end. Maybe I should reinstall the program, but there's no
ununstall
function, so I'm not sure if that would be a good idea? What do you think?

73 Jim

Here'e my Doppler.SQF file

; For Hints look at the end of this file.
; Do not remove or modify these first
; 3 lines of the file, starting with ';'!
FO-29,435850.45,145951.55,USB,LSB,REV,0,0
;
; Hints
; This file contains all data required for the CAT tuning to operate. CAT
tuning
; only works for satellites whose frequencies are contained in the file.
; To use the program's tuning functions during Vfo operation, these data are
also
; needed.
; It is essential not to modify the file format, when you edit the file.
; Be careful not to add blanks or blank lines. For decimal markers, the point
; has to be used.
; To add another satellite, copy one of the lines, insert the copy into the
; data section, then modify it for the new satellite.
;
; Each line has to contain the following parameters:
; The name of the satellite, the spelling has to be the same as in the
Keplerian
; source file.
; the receive- and transmit frequencies in kHz,
; the Up- and Downlink modes, possible entries: FM,FMN,CW,CWN,USB,LSB,
; the frequency trend of the satellite (normal or reverse), possible entries:
NOR,
REV
; the converter and transverer offset frequencies in kHz
;
; As a general rule, all 7 parameters have to be present, even if some of them
; are irrelevant for a particular satellite. In that case the unused data may
; have any value.
;
; Each line may contain a short comment at it's end, see the examples in
; the data lines for AO-51. The comment must be separated by a comma from
; the last parameter entry.
;
; If the receiving frequency is the only one needed (UO-11), the transmitting
; frequency has to be set to 0.
; Converter and transverter offsets also have to be 0, if no converter or
; transverter is needed for the satellite concerned.
; For satellites using multiple frequencies or frequency pairs, the name has
to
; be repeated each time. At program start, the first file encountered for a
specific
; satellite will be used. By editing the file, you should therefore pay
attention
; to put the most used frequency as a first entry in the list.
;
; For more detailed informations read the manual, section 'Auxiliary files',
; 'Doppler.SQF'. For more detailed informations about converter/transverter
; operation read the FAQ.htm, section 'Converter/Transverter Operation'.

Frequency 145.800MHz

30 seconds of silent carrier at 3 minute interval.

Keps are still wrong as default download by PCsat32 & HRD. Signal audible
long after predicted LOS.

Or, another way of comparing the cost of $8000 for 3 weeks operation is:

TubeSat $8000 for 21 days = $380 per day

AO-51 $100,000 for 1850 days = $54 per day. and if it lasts for another
5 years. $27 per day.

What a good deal AO-51 was. Thank you Robin/Spacequest/AMSAT-NA

David

Frequency 145.800MHz

4 to 5 seconds of silent carrier approx 4 minutes into pass followed by a
shorter burst of 1 to 2 seconds.

2 seconds of silent carrier approx 9 minutes into pass.

Above timing based on Keps which I believe to be wrong.

After predicted LOS a further couple of carrier bursts were heard at approx
+ 2 minutes with a characteristic sound of an intermittent connection.

I'm not sure how the proposed radios work but will simply observe that we
don't have a Space Station allocation at 902 MHz and the allocation at 2.4 GHz
is 2.4-2.450 GHz.

This growing notion of flying unlicensed devices in orbit is on very
questionable legal ground in my personal opinion.

Hi Folks,

I just want to say thanks to all the folks who helped me with this. I'm now
back
up and running with the CAT interface from SATPC32 to my ICOM 910H.

In case anyone is wondering; I am pretty certain that what happened is that
Celestrak altered the format of their kep files (maybe a couple of months ago,
or
more), and in particular, changed the format of the sats name. I found I had
to
change "FO-29" to "JAS-2 (FO-29)" in the Doppler.sql file.

The moral of this story is if your CAT interface stops working, check that
you
doppler.sql file has excatly the same sat name as in the keps file. (I think
what
confused me, and thats getting easier and easier as the years go by, is that
"FO-29"
appeared in the keps file in brackets.) !!

Thanks again to all who came to my aid!

Hi Jim,

You don't need to uninstall. Maybe you could just backup your personal
DATA just in case, located in :

C:\Documents and settings\ (your user)\Application Data\SatPC32

Backup everything under this directory to another location. Once
backed up, delete this directory and reinstall the software.... the
latest version 12.8.

If everything works fine after reinstall, you could bring back files
your did personal modification and tweaks, file by file, from your
previous backup. This way, not the shortest, you will find wich file
that cause you this problem.

I always back up this directory time to time.... we always do a lot of
tweaks over time......

Hi,

Could somebody send me his doppler file for SatPC32 ??

I'm a newbie, and I would like to figure it out how FO-29 and VO-52
are configured in this file. I actually trying to "calibrate" my setup
to use those birds. I'm using 2 FT-817ND with SatPC32. Works great !!

Hi,

I would like to know if I'm dreaming, but will it be possible for me
to use these two satellites with my pair of FT-817 running on
SatPC32??

Am I asking too much for my 5W only radios ?? I'm using 2 Eggbeater
antenna from M?... EB-144 and EB432 with AR? preamps on both antennas
feed with heliax.

Jean-Francois,

You are not asking too much. I have operated on ALL of the CW/SSB satellites
using two FT-817NDs and SatPC 32. However, I also use a directional -albeit
small - antenna. Specifically, I use the Elk 2M/440L5 dual-band log periodic.

But, I do not have the antenna mounted outside. My shack, such as it is, is on
the second floor of my home. I routinely operate on all of the CW/SSB
satellites by hand-holding the Elk inside my home and manually tracking the
satellites.

In your case, with the eggbeaters, I will suggest that you should expect
consistent operations using two FT-817NDs only at higher (my rough guess is 20
degrees elevation or higher) of the two satellites. You likely will be more
effecitve on VO-52 because it performs so well. One evening here, when I was
troubleshooting an issue with my station, I was able to hear myself on the VO-
52 downlink with a strong and clear signal - and I had mounted to Yaesu "duck"
antenna to my FT-817ND transmit radio! VO-52 will prove to be fun for you, I
believe.

FO-29 also will be fun, but your station may not prove quite so effective on
it. My best suggestion is to try! I believe you will be very pleasantly
surprised.

FYI - when it is in Mode B, you also should be able to work Grand Old AO-7. My
experience with my handheld Elk antenna, operating totally indoors, is that I
need roughly 20 degree of elevation with 5 watts out to hear myself on the AO-
7 downlink. You may need slightly higher elevation.

I hope this is helpful, and I hope to hear you on these satellite very soon!
