The show should also be available on the web at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/newsnight
Newsnights homepage is at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsnight
I've not tried accessing BBC shows from overseas so don't know if they restict
access. If they do I guess a Proxy Server may be one way round it.

iPlayer only works if your ISP is in the UK. Many of the video clips on
BBC/news also refuse to work from here.
I've not been able to find a public proxy in the UK to fool it.

If you ask someone nicely in the UK (Mac/Linux users) they may be
able to download a non-DRM version as an MP4 video file. I'm not
encumbered by MrSoftee so don't know if it can be done one that.

Hi Scott,
Now you've got me wondering... I sent mine off to the normal ARISS QSL site,
and got a somewhat disappointingly generic reply. Did you and the others use
a different service, or go direct to him?

Richard has the cards made up, and was handing them out at Dayton
Hamvention to those who were there. (He also had his log from ISS so
people could see their call in it.) I don't know what his schedule is

Hey everyone,
As I type this (1304 UTC), the Special Event has begun! My thanks to all of
the operators who've volunteered to help activate colonies on the satellites.
Thanks, too, to everyone at AMSAT for the support it is providing, including a
presence on the AMSAT-NA home page. That simply is wonderful, and very, very
much appreciated.
One last update - we've added Maryland! Bruce, WA3SWJ, will be activating that
colony during the event with the special call sign WA3SWJ/K2F.
That means we have 11 of the 13 original colonies active on the satellites
from now through midnight EDT Saturday (0359 UTC on July 5). That is
outstanding!
Here, I intend to work CW quite a bit on the linear satellites (AO-7, FO-29
and VO-52), so listen for N3TL/K2G below the middle of those satellites'
passbands. I'll try to work at least one pass of each satellite in SSB, but I
hope we can get some CW ops on the air and in orbit!
73 to all from the Georgia Colony!
Tim - N3TL/K2G

About the only thing we could do is use them as training guides for
receiving weak signals. Satellities are not designed to qsy, or do
anything other than they actual function(s), specified long before
they were ever built. Add more to a bird increases complexity, and
also failures.
I'll bet they turned it off to free up that frequency for something
else. If that is the case then we can't even really try monitoring.
I've often wondered about the ham community using old systems
but except for really rare cases, they are just too specific to do
anything for us.

I know it would be expensive but on the "if you spread your net wide
enough" view of thinking, could we not approach commercial satellite
projects prior to launch and bung a transponder on them only to be used
when the primary mission fails? OK, so you might win some, might lose
some and I know it would be expensive but it seems better than the
situation we have now, plus we could be potentially building in some
long term birds that would replace the current ageing fleet. It would be
a long term view, but it would be something!
Presumably this has been brought up before but no harm in re-hashing it
for any new ideas especially with the BoD voting soon to happen! :-D

Thats a neat idea. We'd have to build the whatever to the physical
specs provided, and pay for the extra fuel needed. Sadly, I think
in order to make this work we're talking real money, but perhaps I
am wrong. Perhaps there is a tax-writeoff somehow? I'd like to
hear of what the amsat folks have thought of along these lines;
they know of the conditions of business in the field.

This sounds like the AMSAT-Intelsat deal except that the Intelsat agreement
would allow the amateur payload to operate in parallel with the primary
payload. A number of the RS series amateur satellites also operated this
way.
