I tried using the crew contact and repeater freqs on ISS for this mornings
west coast pass at 0845PST. All I heard was a carrier. Anyone know what's
happening?

Thanks,

ISS had packet on 145.800 on 5:30 utc pass using RS0ISS-3. Anyone know
what uplink was active?

No luck with 145.490, but that could be operator problems.

Hi, everybody.
Today at Field Day was the first time I tried to work AO-27, and succeeded.
One thing I noticed, is that as the satellite came up over the horizon, I
wasn't hearing anything until what sounded like a long data burst happened.
Then I heard the sat come alive, with what sounded like people already in QSO.
As the sat progressed, I heard a lot of operators, then the long data burst
happened again, and it seemed like the sat went "dead" I know a bit about how
it's scheduled (TOPR), but since this is the first time I was able to hear it
well enough to actually consider it usable.
What's the data burst? Is it part of the TOPR, or am I hearing something else?
73, Jim? KQ6EA

Answered my own question. ISS was running packet, 145.800 down and
145.825 up using RS0ISS-3 on all three overnight passes during Field
Day.

Jim,

AO-27 always, at least under normal conditions, structures its operating
period in blocks, including that leading telemetry burst. You can see the
schedule here:

ARISS Reaches 443 School Contacts

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 179.01
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
June 28, 2009
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-179.01

A major milestone for the Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station or ARISS school project. This as the total number of ARISS
contacts between the astronaut hams on board the orbiting outpost and
schoolrooms here on Earth has now reached 443.

An average of 20 students are able to ask questions of an on-orbit crew
during a normal ARISS contact. That totals out to well over 8000
school kids world-wide who have gotten a chance to vicariously visit
the International Space Station via ham radio since the classroom
contact program began.

As space experimentation has progressed so has amateur radio's part in
it. Today, the ARISS school contact program is an important part of
this ongoing work by ham radio volunteers world-wide. Hams working
with astronauts and cosmonauts to bring the science of spaceflight a
little closer to kids here on Earth.

Dan Littel, AJ9K has advised that he will be on vacation in Alaska between
July
1 - 11, and will try to be active during a few
passes during his stay. Dan will
be using my 5w VX-5R HT and AL800 whip on AO27, SO50 and AO51, if in mode J.
Here is Dan's expected schedule:

2 July2 BP51 Anchorage
3-4 July AO63 Dutch Harbor, Aleutian Isl
5-8 July BP64 Fairbanks
9-11 July BP42 Denali NP

Dan may also be able to fit in a few more grids while in transit. Dan also
noted that, "since this is a vacation, and I will have minimal control over my
schedule (that's my family's job, and I'm only a minority voting member...).
I
hope to be as active as practical".

SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-137.03
Original American Colonies Will Be Active on Satellite

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 179.03
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
June 28, 2009
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-179.03

During the period from July 1 through July 5 at least nine of the Original 13
American Colonies will be active on the amateur satellites as part of a
special
event organized by Ken, KU2US, in New York. Here is the Web site announcing
the
event, and the certificate available:

http://home.comcast.net/~dzabawa/ThirteenColonies.htm

You?ll also find updates on Ken?s QRZ.com page ? look up KU2US.

As of Wednesday, 24 June, there are commitments from stations in nine of the
original 13 colonies, and they will be using the call signs for each that are
listed on the special events page. Tim, N3TL provided the following example,
"I?ll be operating as K2G daily during the special event. I intend to work at
least one pass of every satellite as K2G, every day."

Listed alphabetically by Colony, here are the stations that have confirmed to
date. The calls they will use are in parentheses:

Georgia ? Tim, N3TL (K2G)
Massachusetts ? Dave, KB1PVH (K2H)
New Hampshire ? Rik, N1XED (K2K)
New Jersey ? Marc, W4MPS (K2I)
New York ? Peter, WB2OQQ (K2A)
North Carolina ? Jim, ND9M (K2J)
Rhode Island ? Fletch, N1RCN (K2C)
South Carolina ? Art, K4YYL (K2L)
Virginia ? Steve, NL7VX (K2B)

As of the 24th, there are four of the original 13 colonies NOT scheduled to be
active on the satellites:

Connecticut
Delaware
Maryland
Pennsylvania

Can anyone help with any of them?

The process is simple:
1 ? Please email n3tl@xxxxxxxxx.xxxxx let him know of your interest.
2 ? You can work as many or as few satellite passes as you like during the
special event. It?s supposed to be fun, not work!
3 ? After the event, email your log(s) to KU2US, who will handle the
certificates.

Tim will provide more information after hearing from anyone who wants to
activate one of the four remaining colonies.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to work one or
more of us on passes from July
1 through July 5. You only need to work one station to get the certificate,
but
the more the merrier!

[ANS thanks Tim, N3TL, for the above information]

One thing I noticed, is that as the satellite came up over the horizon, I
wasn't hearing anything until what sounded like a long data burst happened.
Then I heard the sat come alive, with what sounded like people already in QSO.
As the sat progressed, I heard a lot of operators, then the long data burst
happened again, and it seemed like the sat went "dead" I know a bit about how
it's scheduled (TOPR), but since this is the first time I was able to hear it
well enough to actually consider it usable.

Hello AO-7 friends,

We make a short activity on 4.+5.07.2009 from a high mountain close to
Athens. With that good take of, we try to make some DX via the old lady.

We will have some passes which covers the north-east of the USA and Canada,
as well we have some good opportunities for VU, ZS and 5R. A real difficult
area is Brasil. We have a extreme short window to Natal, HI24-square. Is
there anyone out, who is able to work AO-7?? PY?s, please look for someone
and give us a short info!!

In most of the directions we have the horizon at -1deg !! So stay tuned at
145.950MHz -+Doppler and QRM.

For further infos ask me: sx1dl@xxxxx.xx

I took this screen grab of this morning's eastern FO-29 pass, and what it
shows is in my opinion very illustrative of a problem that is getting worse
even on days other than Field Day.

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q305/glasbrenner/radio/FO-29FDanotated.jpg

Spread out! There is no good reason that we should have a dozen operators
fighting over the center 15 kHz of a 100 kHz wide transponder. Remember the
gentlemen's agreement is the lower third is for CW, middle 1/3 is for mixed
ops, and the upper 1/3 is for SSB. There is nothing magic about the Doppler
shift at the very center of the passband that simple addition and
subtraction can't duplicate elsewhere.

Just my opinion, and please take it constructively.

Tanks, everybody.
I suspected that's what was happening, and reading the AO-27 pages "kinda
sorta" confirmed it, but I'd just never *heard* the bird before.
Guess my receive setup is working as expected!

I noticed it, too.
I was up at the top-end all by my lonesome because I didn't want to step on
anybody!

AMEN brother!

I called CQ multiple times on AO-7 in CW last night between 145.940 and
145.944 (downlink), and NOBODY was tuning down that far. I found that very
disappointing, as I did the close proximity of all the stations on FO-29 and
VO-52.

I believe a lot of us could have made a lot more contacts on the linear
satellites if we'd just used the passband.

Thanks for this post Drew!

73 to all,

Tim - N3TL
