I am trying to come up with a portable sat station that can fit in a
briefcase. I have the dipole and reflector antenna that K5GNA sells for
his downconverter but I am looking for something compact that can fit in
the briefcase and the reflector cant. I have thought about the G3RUH
patch antenna but that is a little pricey for me at this point. Are
there any other antennas that someone can suggest that I try for this
quest ?

Thanks,
Ron

A folding corner reflector? if weight's a problem aluminum foil (I ALMOST
said tin foil...so many years ...)over a folding cardboard backing will do.

Try this patch - its very easy to make, I used some scrap brass, and works
very well. It is circularly polarised although for correct sense it is
designed for
reflection use, i.e., with a dish

http://www.kiwisat.org/23cm_patch.pdf

It was used to receive AO-40 direct and is currently in service in a 600mm
dish. Gain can be increased by using a "V" or parabolic shaped reflector
made
of almost anything metal. An umbrella lined with aluminium foil would work
fine.

The experts will tell you it is far from efficient however it wins on the
simplistic,
easy to make and good performance stakes.

I finally got my satellite antenna system up, using with my IC-910H,?
Everything works well on? 144mhz, I have separate inline SWR - power meters
for 144 and 432, SWR and PO on? 144 is good.
When I? transmit on 432,,, I get good output, but no SWR reading. The antenna
is , hopefully, circular right polarized, an old Cushcraft 416TB. As I go up
and down the band, the PO increaes, decreases, as if it puts out more power
where it is resonant, but the SWR meter reads nothing, no matter where i am on
the band. is this because of the hook up for circular polarization? I am
hesitant to? apply much power if I dont know the SWR. I can hit local
repeaters, so i know something is going out the antenna, and it seems to hear
OK. Haven't tried listening to the satellites yet.

Why wont it read SWR on the circular polarized 432 antenna? Reads Power Out,
but no SWR reading. I kind of expected either a good SWR? reading, or, a very
high one, but I get no reading at all.

Finally got my satellite antenna system set up, using with my IC-910H. Works
well on 144mhz, good PO, good SWR.?
But on 432,,, I have good PO but NO reading on the SWR meter. As I tune up and
down the band, PO goes up and down, as I get? near or far from resonant freq.?
Power Out goes up and down as I tune up and down the band, but I get NO
reading on the SWR meter.? Using an older CushCraft 416TB, circular right, I
think.
I expected either a good SWR reading,? (hopefully) or a bad reading, but I get
NO SWR reading. My only thought is how it is wired, for R circular. I am
hesitant to run much power until I determine the SWR.
Any ideas as to why I get NO SWR rreading on 432 antnna? Seems to hear OK, I
can hear local repeaters, etc.
Not sure what is going on. The meter is good, I checked that, SWR reads OK on
another? radio/antenna.

For AO-51 not much gain is needed so why not place it in front of a
corner reflector? The ground-plane of the patch should not be
modified as it affects the feed impedance. There used to be a corner
reflector design in the ARRL Antenna Book. Spacing in front of the
corner also affects impedance. If I remember correctly a corner
reflector using a dipole feed has about 9-10 dB gain. A 2-foot dish
would be around 22-dB and much more difficult to track due to the
narrower beamwidth. 10-dB is quite forgiving which would be useful
for the rapid tracking rates of a Leo satellite. A dish will be
needed only when we get the next Heo with its much higher orbit.

If not mistaken, the patch has a gain of about 9-dB so may be
sufficient by itself!

When I get my satellite antennas re-installed (this spring), I plan
on having both a 33-inch dish with helix feed (my old AO-40 setup)
and a corner reflector with two separate preamps and Drake
converters. Added to this will be 144 and 432 circular polarity
x-yagis and a 1268-MHz Loop yagi for mode-L. Most of this will be
overkill until the next Heo. You can see my plans at
http://www.kl7uw.com/sat.htm

Thanks for the easy patch design. I'll have to make one up for
comparison with the helix feed.

Hi Bob, W0DXZ

To test why you get NO SWR and if your SWR meter is good or not disconnect
the antenna from it and transmit a stady carrier with low power for two or
three seconds.

If your SWR meter is working properly you should read about the same level
for the forward power and the reflected power been the SWR very high and the
maximum possible without any load connected to it.

IF the above test is OK there are two possible outcomes.

1) The SWR of your antenna is very low and very close to 1 and so very good

2) The SWR of your antenna is greater than 1 and so no very good but your
instrument cannot read it correctly because your transmission line is
very lossy and the reflected power flowing back from to the antenna to
the SWR meter is partially dissipated in to the coax cable.

If you suspect that point 2) is the case then connect the meter directly to
the antenna connector on top of the antenna and now read the real reflected
power and the real SWR

I hope this helps

I know this sounds? question idiotic, but,,, sometimes you just have to admit
you can't solve a problem, and ask for help.

I cannot figure out how to measure SWR with my IC-910H... does it not have an
internal SWR meter? I'm using external meters. I can't believe you can't
measure SWR with this rig.

Help...

The 910H does not have a built-in SWR meter. Does ANY rig that can provide
preamp power over the coax have one?

Personally, I have never found an internal SWR meter to be as convenient to
use, nor as accurate as, an external meter.

You can make it out of simple aluminum roof flashing.

Hello !

Just want to share with you some results of the past months:

In November I built an DK7ZB 2x6 elements beam for 145MHz:
http://home.vianetworks.nl/users/hamoen/pa3guo/dk7zb.html
This website contains why and how I created this antenna.
Lots of pictures of the construction details are included.
Also it includes a bunch of measurements (SWR, Impedance).
By now this has become my main 2 meter antenna.

This month I finally finished the polarization switch:
http://home.vianetworks.nl/users/hamoen/pa3guo/polarizer.html
Suggested by Rob, PE1ITR, I re-used a design by SM5BSZ.
Now I can select either horizontal, vertical, RCHP or LHCP.
With the 2x6 elements in 'X' position this is a great solution.
Also here detailed measurements, with help of the miniVNA of Rob.

Especially for LEOs with fast changing polarization and deep
QSB circular polarization is comfortable.

Please let me know if any questions !

If you are using the Icom remote preamps with the
Icom910, you are stuck!

You can not get a valid SWR return when the Premaps
are installed.

You have to stick the SWR meter between the Antenna
and the Preamp, not between the Radio and Preamp,
which is how you may have it setup now.

The Preamp Power switch may also damage your SWR
meter.
