That is sad to Hear. Bob was was on my longest (in distance) QSO's on AO-40.
I remember that we only had a 10 minute window to work each other before the

We are planning a grid dxpedition to the EM27/E28 and EM37/EM38 grid
boundaries in MO on 6/13/09.

We anticipate being active on the following passes:

Satellite??? Date ?? ??? ?? AOS(UTC)
AO-27?? ?? 13-Jun-09?? ?18:56:41?? ?
SO-50?? ?? 13-Jun-09?? ?19:11:04?? ?
AO-27?? ?? 13-Jun-09?? ?20:35:02

The operation is contingent upon having acceptable weather and we hope to work
everyone who needs these very rare grids.

As someone fairly new to satellites, is there a list of rare grid squares
available? I might be able to supply a few around my area, EM85.

It was a Fashion on this BB in the AO-40 time. Those who knows look at those
who don't from a different level... There is no stupid
question and if this BB still have some use lets those who want to help free
to answer even if it is an obvious RTFM case at your eyes.

I fight this mentality back years ago and even with instructions booklets you
still need the other experience just read the IC-220H manual
and you will see even with the RTFM you will need to practice a lot.

If only one question can save time and frustation the another one i feel it
worth the time spent to answer his question.

Partially sorry about my tirade last night. I am just sick of those
hams who are cheapskates, and love their "bargains" that they find
from questionable sources ... no matter whether or not the equipment
carries an FCC ID number or not.

The use of such illegal equipment demeans us all.

Just Clint's opinion, of course.

There might not be a stupid question but there are certainly those that are
too lazy to first try to help themselves and
expect others to do everything for them.

Great work, Andrew.

If you have the capacity, maybe we can submit specific programming
instructions for working the birds on each of those radios, and ofer
it on your site. Might be as simple as snipping a couple pages as .pdf
from the owners manual ...

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but FCC IDs are not mandatory for equipment used
in the Amateur service:

Semi-On-Topic Link: http://swap.qth.com/fcc/fcc-gccbltr.htm

"Devices used in the Amateur Radio Service do not require authorization
prior to being imported into the United States, but devices for other
services, including the CB service, require Commission approval."

Thus, provided the importer only uses it under Part 97, it's kosher. I
just can't, say, use it under a GMRS license or something.

Again, I could be way wrong on this.

I would invite comments on a recent change to cabling my IC-910H with my AEA
DSP-2232 TNC.

Until now, I have cabled the 910 main & sub data port sockets to the 2232
five pin din radio input port. The cable was made up using the 910 data
socket 9600 bps convention. I did this in order to communicate with
satellite BB services such as GO-32. Unfortunately, this convention does
not support 1200 bps. I would need to swap cables in order to switch RX
audio from data port pin 4 to pin 5 for 1200bps AFSK.

To get around this shortcoming, I am replacing the data socket cables with a
cable using ACC port to connect with 2232. Icom manual says this should
work for 9600bps FM mode or 1200bps FM/SSB modes.

Does anyone know whether using ACC port vs Main & Sub data sockets
compromises anything?

I am using that very arrangement. However, I am using the Yaesu CT-39A
cables since they were cheap and have the same mini-din connector. The
xmit is not a problem since the same pin on the IC-910 is the same for
either speed. However, I tied the 1200 and 96000 rx leads together and
since you can't do both speeds at the same time, I found no problems
with that configuration and no interactions. I am also using a DSP2232
that I use to use on my Kenwood TS711/811.

True.
If equipment needed an FCC number then you wouldn't be allowed to use home
brew gear without it being tested by the FCC.

The original post described a commercial HT ... operating WAY OUT of
the 2M and 440 amateur bands. For marketing and sales within the
United States, FCC certification is required.

Do people purchase non-FCC-certified commercial rigs and use them on
the amateur bands? Yes.

Is it legal to do so? No.

Hi Jim.

No need to change anything.

Just take audio from the external speaker
socket of the 910 to the audio in on the
2232.
Just make sure its the correct audio in
put on the 2232.

Works OK for me for 1K2 on the ISS.

A couple or three years ago there was an influx of h/t's into the UK via
e-bay with origins in China - I believe they were marketed under the
name JingTong (I kid you not)

If I recall correctly, they were so bad and caused so much interference
that eventually the Regulatory Authority stepped in and ordered a ban on
the sale of these things.

I was going to point out that they also did not have the CE mark
(meaning they were not type approved in Europe) but to be honest that
really does not make a jot of difference - anything can come in the UK,
its only when it causes so much of a problem and enough people kick up a
stink that matters are retrospectively actioned by which time its too
little, too late!

You just have to love "light touch" regulation!

But I am with Clint here. Steer well clear.
