Simon,
... it works. I made some test with G3PLX over PCSat-2 some years ago.
See here: http://www.dk3wn.info/sat/afu/sat_pcsat2.shtml
On the other hand - it should be a challenge and a change for new modes on
satellites.

Sounds interesting - but PSK-31 and Doppler may be problematic - will this

Also tried the same experiment as Mike via PCSat-2. Seems ages ago!
No two way contact but I received a listeners report from the Netherlands
with a copy of the transmitted data.

Gary,
That would be Gary, K9SG. If you go to the K5D website click on "Daily

down to posting "Getting antennas back in order - February 20th." Scroll
down to the bottom and the last two photos show Gary working the birds.

Some amplifying information on this HF transponder:
> ? long range = HEO / MEO or long range planning?
LEO
> Some rough and ready calculations *assuming
> a LEO* are that PSK needs the TX frequency
> adjusting every second or so...
Yes, the good news is that Doppler on the 2m downlink does not
impact the link, since it is FM. But still even at 29 MHz, 90%
of the time the doppler rate is below 5 Hz/sec. See our
original 2002 paper for PCSAT-2 and RAFT.
http://aprs.org/psk31uplink.html
But this transponder has one big advantage, everyone's relative
position in the passband is seen the same by everyone at the
same time, and also, it is full duplex, so each stations uplink
software can compensate his own uplink so that he remains
exactly where he is.
10m/24m Transponder: Actually, I forgot that we had talked
ourselves out of the HF/HF transponder since it would require
TWO HF rigs to be able to operate full duplex. Instead we had
changed it to 2m SSB uplink and 10m downlink. But then I guess
it could be either.
Come to think about it, so many rigs now have both VHF and HF, I
guess it makes sense to go that way. But then the HF/HF
inverting transponder would have only 3% of the Doppler and
wouldn't that be a joy. As you can see, we have not made up our
minds...

In order to get funding, we are proposing it as a "satcom"
system for vehicles, boats and planes that only have old HF and
UHF(AM) transceivers. Those low value platforms will never get
satcom, but we can build a cubesat to provide it. Of course, it
is just a demo with the UHF up and HF down, but all the rest of
the time, we will have the links in the Amateur Satelltie
Service bands for us. The UHF AM uplink would not be used for
amateur radio, but the HF downlink would be available for the
amateur transponders we mentioned above.

That was RS-12 Bob. I remember it well, trying the OTH contact's into the bird

still having JA'S call me back direct, just to get the HF contact on 15m.

Hey everyone,
I have decided to take some great advice and mount my Elk on a rotor in the
attack. I have been told 30 degrees is good, but how do i orient it to be
the most reliable? When i work the Elk by hand, i keep turning it to keep a
good signal. I think you all know what im asking..
Any advise would be appreciated

Yes it was...
The QSO number on the recording I have is 1339. The RS-12 robot QSO went
like this:
RS12 DE AB2CJ AR (my old call was AB2CJ)
Robot responds:
AB2CJ DE RS12 QSL NR 1339 OP ROBOT TU SW QSO NR 1339 73 SK
I think the robot would adjust to the callers code speed as well; it's been
a while so I'm not sure. I can send you the recording if you like.

Jeff,

Yes it did go silent some time ago. The recording is probably 10 years old.

Tony,
FB. At first I thought RS-12/13 pulled an AO-7. :) RS-12/13 was a fine
bird. It was the first bird I made satellite QSO's with and had a blast
with it. RS-10/11 provided numerous contacts as well.

Steve - Somewhat lower angles will be better, Bob recommends 15
degrees. Start with that. Mount the antenna so that the elements are
horizontal. When handheld, you can twist the antenna to adjust
polarization, when it is fixed, you take what you get. It shouldn't be
a big problem, you will just notice some fades that you can't adjust
out. BUt the advantages of a gain antenna up high and rotatable in
azimuth overcome that. - Duffey

Another HF would be nice. I had a good start on WAS with RS12/13.
