Hi All,

I received mine also today. I would also like to second the "thanks" to
AMSAT India
for a job well done and V0-52's fourth birthday.

The deadline for nominations for the AMSAT BOD must be received at the AMSAT
office no later than June 12th. A nomination requires either one AMSAT
Member Society or five current AMSAT members. A director serves 2 years.

How else would it be able to cross band repeat? Page three of the manual:

"Featuring 1054 memory channels (527 channels each for "Main" and "Sub"
band), full
duplex operation with independent Volume and Squelch controls, and built-in
CTCSS and
DCS encoder/decoder circuits, ..."

Yes, the FT-8800 will let you transmit on one band while receiving
on another. Having separate volume and tuning knobs for each
VFO, something that similar radios from the other manufacturers
lack, make it nice for FM satellite work. I had one earlier this year,
before leaving it in Mexico as part of a complete FM satellite station
(one I might use on a future trip, if I didn't haul my own gear).

If I had to replace my IC-2720H, I would probably get an FT-8800 as
the replacement. Price is good, better than the IC-2820H which was
Icom's replacement for the IC-2720H, and the separate knobs for each
VFO made it a better (for me) choice than the current Kenwood
2m/70cm FM mobiles (TM-D710 or TM-V71A). And, as Drew
mentioned, its ability to function as a cross-band repeater ensures it
can work with the satellites in cross-band full-duplex mode.

Hi!

Another HT for the "list" would be the IC-Z1A. This was a 2m/70cm
dual-bander with a detachable control head/mic, which used the
same accessories as the IC-W32A. I picked up a couple of them a
few months ago, left one in Mexico as a complete portable station
for the FM satellites (along with another complete station using an
FT-8800 mobile radio instead of an HT), and still have the second
IC-Z1A at home that I need to do something with.

Like with the IC-W32A and many other Icom 2m/70cm radios of that
time sold in North America, the IC-Z1A does not transmit below 440
MHz without a mod. It works well without modification on the current
FM satellites (AO-27, AO-51, SO-50), but the mod is needed for the
normal ISS cross-band voice repeater and for use on the 70cm band
that most of the world outside the USA and Canada has.

But the ability to crossband repeat doesn't automatically mean that a radio
can monitor a satellite's downlink while transmitting to it ....

I would say "get the 2820 and try out some D-STAR/digital stuff too".
Plus the 2820 has the GPS in it... with the D-STAR installed...

IC-2820 and Kenwood's TNC/control head thing together makes a pretty
cool little "digital geek" mobile station, and with the 2820 also
capable of duplex operation...

Lots of toys = fun. Of course, to get the full utilization out of the
D-STAR portion, you really need to be in the coverage of a Gateway
(internet) equipped D-STAR repeater...

Stuff to think about...

That's correct Clint
And also being full duplex with ability to hear the sat downlink doesn't

Of course it does. The radio must be able to receive on one band while
transmitting on another in order to cross band repeat, which is the same
functionality we want for satellite. All cross band repeat capable rigs are
by nature full duplex. However, not all full duplex rigs will cross band
repeat.

Again, incorrect. Think about it for a second. In order for a radio to
receive a signal on one band and simultaneously repeat it on another (the
meaning of cross band repeat), it has to be capable of full duplex
operation. I challenge both of you to find an example that will cross band
repeat but isn't full duplex.

I think maybe you are confusing cross band repeat with cross band split
capable.

And being able to tune each band independently whilst transmitting isn't
something many of them can do.

Aloha All

I've noticed that AO-51 will have a maximum
elevation of 2 degrees on todays "easterly"
Hawaiian pass. The footprint will extend from
Honolulu to near the western border of Iowa.
To date, my "longest" AO-51 QSO has
been with K7ULS near Eden, Utah. This
may be an opportunity to extend that
distance. I am willing to give it a try.
The pass "over" Hawaii will be from 0232Z
to 0236Z today. I should be at the beach
with my Arrow and D700 shortly before
that (5 Watts). At minimum, I will get to
see some nice sceney on the way to the
beach HIHI. Hope to hear you.

Aloha and 73, de robert

My FT-8800 is my main FM sat rig. It is the perfect 'mobile' type for FM
sats with the independent volume, squelch and tuning controls for each
side (band). Full duplex crossband works perfectly. I even have mine
rigged up with an external speaker/switch box with headphone jack. I can
plug in the headphones, switch off the speaker and talk full duplex
without feedback.

Having the 6 pre-program buttons on the front helps too. Mine is set up
so that when I press button six, the VHF side goes to the AO-51 uplink
and the UHF side goes to the downlink. I tune the UHF side as the
doppler changes. Button 5 switches to AO-27 and SO-50.

Yes but
To use the rig as a cross band repeater is a different story.
To input on VHF and retransmit on UHF is crossband repeat
Using the rig as a repeater.
I have an HT that is full duplex but is unable to crossband
repeat(rebroadcast on another band)
Am I correct in my statements
I hope so
