Hi Doug,

Yes for some reason the BBC only hold shows on the site for a few days.

I've just got home after being away for a few days and I see that as they
don't do a podcast version it'll need converting to MP3 to listen to in the
car tomorrow morning.

Must admit I'd never even heard of the Judica-Cordiglia brothers before.

As an "aside" to Bob's comments, the higher takeoff angle of a 1/4
wave on 2m or 70cm is something that astute FM/repeater users in the
mountainous areas of the country have always known... when you're at
the bottom of a canyon, and the station/repeater you want to work is a
couple of canyons over... a 1/4 wave will work because it'll get the
signal "up and out" of the terrain via bouncing off rock walls, better
than higher gain antennas. Everyone should have a basic 1/4 wave
antenna available for their mobile station, for use in certain
situations.

While I agree with the comments that typical mobile installations
have no need for low-loss coax, I've started using the slightly more
expensive NMO mounts with low-loss coax in mobile installations for a
different reason... the mounts are typically installed once and left
alone, but someday I might want to hook up the 927 MHz FM rig and put
an antenna on one of those mounts... and at 927 (or higher... say an
Icom ID-1 for D-STAR use at 1.2 GHz), that lossy coax on the typical
Larsen NMO mount becomes a problem. Larsen (and others) make the
mounts with better coax on them for only a few more dollars, and
amortizing that cost out over the 8 years I've owned the current
vehicle (and counting), I think mobile installations fall under the
same old Elmer's line "buy the best coax you can afford and you'll
only have to install it once!".

Of course, if all you're ever planning on doing in the mobile station
is VHF/UHF... it definitely doesn't matter. I want the flexibility to
swap the antennas and run higher bands.

> The repeater sites may see 100-150 foot hardline runs, though. I

Good repeater builders/designers treat the installation almost exactly
the same as good weak-signal terrestrial or satellite folk's
installations, for sure... we're trying not to lose any of that 100 mW
pip-squeak signal from an HT in some guy's basement 20 miles away who
is too lazy to do the math to figure out his path loss, when he calls
complaining that the repeater is "deaf". LOL! Hardline on
everything, commercial quality high gain antennas, appropriate levels
of band-pass or window filtering and pre-amps... a good repeater site
looks a heck of a lot like a station set up to receive satellites or
terrestrial weak-signal SSB... other than the antennas are fixed, and
they're vertically polarized...

Repeater installations also mean avoiding cabling with foil-over-braid
and other things that don't duplex well, and various other things that
satellite and weak-signal enthusiasts DON'T usually have to worry
about at home stations... I have no qualms with using LMR-400 here at
the house... using it at the repeater site can quickly become a
disaster that eats up multiple weekends.

A good repeater, done right, isn't cheap... nor is it as simple as
slapping up a cheap Diamond antenna on a tower in a good location and
calling it "done"... and the money isn't in the radios. It's (just
like weak-signal terrestrial and satellite work) in the antennas! :-)

I've had several questions on the reflector regarding the "jewelry
contests" we ran at the conventions for about eight years...

For the newbies they were formulated to provide some interest for the
wives of those hams, not interested in ham radio...OT's will remember...

The "jewelry" was designed to be electronically similar to some part
of our hobby...yet be wearable as jewelry..

A local friend suggested that those interested google my callsign,
wb6llo, or Leanore's, ka6ucd, for several entry explanations....so as
not to belabor it here....

Please, direct to me for questions...

changed to instead of just A051 it now says Echo 51. Has anyone else had this
problem?

The Yaesu FT-50 is not full duplex. It is 'dual watch' which isn't what
you want.

The Kenwood TM-733 mobile is full duplex. Add that one to your list.

OK, Here's another oldie but a goodie:

Heathkit HW-24 or HW-24A.
This is a dual band FM mobile rig, the "A" model is 25 watts, the plain
model is
10 watts.
This is NOT a kit radio, it was factory built, I have had one for about
20 years,
and used it a lot on satellite FM work. It also does cross-band repeat
and does work
great for doing FM satellite work, you can hear your own signal on the
downlink. It has
separate co-ax connectors for VHF/UHF.
It also has memories, P.L. encode and decode, blue flourescent readout,
etc.

John, K6YK

FWIW, the ICOM IC-X2A will also do full duplex, but on 70cm and 23 cm.
Just the thing for AO-51.

Add the Icom IC-2820. Before I purchased one I was told by several people
on here that it wasn't full-duplex, one of them that owned one wasn't sure.
I called Icom and was told by them that it wasn't. Before I bought mine I
tested it and guess what, it was full-duplex. This operating parameter , so
useful to sat operators isn't even mentioned in the manual that Icom
supplies with the 2820. I replaced my aging D-700 with the 2820, and a
Kenwood 710 control head. Now I have a sat user friendly full-duplex, DSTAR
capable mobile, that will also transmit and receive APRS(using the built in
GPS) and regular packets.

Hi Folks,

As previous notified on this list, the location of the AMSAT-UK Colloquium
(25/26
July 2009) has been switched from Manchester to Guildford. This is to ensure
the
best possible event for the largest number of visitors. The venue has been
changed
to the Holiday Inn Hotel at Guildford - this is very close to the Surrey
University
where the event has been held previously. It is just off the Cathedral
roundabout on
the A3.

The 2009 AMSAT Colloquium will now commence at 10am on Saturday July 25th and
close
at approximately 4.30 pm on the Sunday.

The new venue will enable visitors to attend at a significantly lower cost
than last
year and experience greatly improved accommodation. The two days will be
filled with
presentations covering all the latest amateur satellite happenings and
developments.

The new GB4FUN trailer will also be in attendance and available to demonstrate
satellite operations.

An informal social gathering is planned for those who are able to arrive on
the
Friday evening.

Full details of the booking arrangements are below. Members and non-members
will be
equally welcome.

AMSAT-UK Colloquium 2009 - Booking Information

ORDER TO
GUARANTEE A ROOM AT THE HOTEL FOR THE SAT NIGHT YOU MUST BOOK BEFORE FRIDAY 3
