In view of what's is planned for the next P3E HEO i want to try some 10ghz
band experiment
I got a local Hamfest a Hughes LNA P/N 1011836-0009 personal earth station. My
first google search does not give any results nor a direct
call to Hughes company who even give less results...
This LNA has a N type connector on it marked IF a F connector marked LNC
another F marked POINTING and on the side another F connector on
probably the LNA model PLV-810A. There is a rotary adjustable ring for
vertical or horizonthal polarisation and a hand writing note
"10-15GHZ KU" the TX power is 1Watt.
If someone is aware ot the use of this PES or know where to get some manual it
will help me to see if i can put this on the air?

Very cool, my first homebrew project in 20 years appears to be a complete
success (knock on wood). For about $65, I was able to build a modified
version of the K8DAV U-100 Rotor controller, and now my Elk antenna turns
automatically and follows the satellites during each pass.
My particular rotor is the Alliance HIR, which is electrically the same as
the U-83 and the U-98, and which I bought for $25. The K8DAV controller for
these rotors is the same as the one for the U-100, except for the value of
the motor start capacitor. The U-110 takes the same capacitor as the U-100.
This was a fun weekend project and a very useful addition to my satellite
setup. I picked up two of the most expensive parts, the transfomers, for $1
each at the Goodwill store, in the basket of assorted wall-warts in the
electronics section (bring a VOM and test the wall-wart before purchasing).
You could also use the transformer and capacitor from the rotor's original
controller, but I was afraid to cannibalize it without being sure I could
get the new one to work.
Otherwise, the project box was $18, the Basic Stamp board was about $20, and
the solid state relays were $7 each on eBay. All other parts were
inexpensive.

The frequency update rate depends on the update interval you select under
the CAT menu. Note that the interval is the frequency change, not a time
interval.
There are 2 separate tuning interval options you can select: one for SSB/CW
signals, and one for FM signals. Typically, a tuning interval of 100Hz is
fine for CW and SSB signals, while the FM interval should be set according
to the capabilities of your radio and the actual mode of operation. 600 Hz
should be fine for FM voice, while a smaller interval might be desireable
for packet.
Regardless of the interval you choose, updates will happen faster near the
center of a pass....

After several years of running the AMSAT-UK shop, Jim G3WGM has handed the
reins to Ciaran Morgan M0XTD. Ciaran obtained his full license in April
2008 and enjoyed organising a very successful ARISS contact between
Budbrooke School in Warwick, England and Richard Garriott K5KWQ whilst he
was onboard the International Space Station in October 2008.
The AMSAT-UK shop has been an important source of funds in the past and
Ciaran is revamping the current shop to help it to continue to make a
valuable contribution to the funds into the future. The shop has had a
policy of only stocking items that are difficult to obtain in the UK and,
initially, that policy will remain whilst Ciaran gets familiar with the
stock and identifies other possible options.
Suggestions are always welcome and a new email address
(amsat-uk-shop@xxxxx.xxxx has been setup. Please send the suggestions in
and keep checking the web site for updates.
Due to the level of sales of software, and compatibility issues with the
more recent Microsoft Operating Systems, it has been decided to stop selling
InstantTrack and QuickTrack. WiSP and SatPC32 licenses will continue to be
issued from the shop
Also, there are currently no books for sale - we are looking at this but
suggestions are always welcome.
On the hardware front, we have restocked with the ever popular LVB
motherboards and we also have a limited number of complete kits for the LVB
Tracker unit. Half of the new kits also include the AMSAT-NA enclosure with
compatible display unit! We are also investigating restocking the 2.4GHz
signal sources from G0MRF and the G7HIA 2.4GHz patch kits - please keep a
watch on the website for more details.

It may be of interest that this will very shortly be a computer controllable
radio (by week's end). Piexx (who makes the IC-271 and -471 control boards)
has made one for the 1271 now based on my radio which is there to figure it
out.
So if you want to do 1.2ghz with computer control, I would contact Bob and
then Piexx.

See if you can set explicit permission for satpce32 to be run as
administrator. I am presuming that the error is that the user doesn't have
adequate permission to run said program (or at least to make the change to the
'rotator north' parm).
Right click on the program icon, select Properties, Shortcut tab, Advanced,
check the box to run as another user...

I used KLM with a polarity switch many years ago.
The polarity switch seemed unreliable and lossy, and I often forgot to change
polarity on Leo?s.
When I replaced my KLM with M2, I decided not to bother with switching
polarity and just run RHCP.
The benefits:
No switch losses, more gain.
Do not need to worry about forgetting to hit the polarity switch.
Transmitter power not limted to switch.
Other Tips:
Go with the most elements you can afford for a single boom.
20+ elements on 2-meters
40+ elements on 440
Coax:
You can now get Flexible thick coax that will support an antenna Rotor.
Most people used RG-8 style coax, which is approximately 10 mm in diameter.
However you can now get flexible rotor grade coax which is approximately 15 mm
in diameter, and has much lower loss than the best RG-8 style coax.
Example:
Belden RG-213
145 MHz 2.5 dB loss per 100 feet
438 MHz 4.5 dB loss per 100 feet
LMR 600 UltraFlex Rotor cable
145 MHz 1.1 dB loss per 100 feet
438 MHz 2.0 dB loss per 100 feet
As you can see, by switching from 10mm coax to 15mm coax you can reduce you
loss by over 50%. The 15mm cables cost 2-3 times as much, however you will
not have to worry about coax losses any more on Frequencies below 2 gig.

On Saturday, 30 May 2009, I will have an AMSAT table at the hamfest
in Prescott, Arizona. This hamfest is a joint venture between the
Yavapai Amateur Radio Club and Verde Valley Amateur Radio Association,
and will be held at the Granite Mountain Middle School in Prescott
(grid DM34sn). The hamfest runs from 0800 to 1300 local (1500-2000
UTC). More information about the hamfest is available at:

During the hamfest and before it officially opens, I will have
demonstrations on FM satellite passes as well as VO-52. You may
hear me on as early as 1300 UTC, even if I have nobody listening
to the pass at my station except for me.
After the hamfest, as I have typically done in the past year or
so, I will make a long drive back home. I hope to make it as
far north as grid DM36 for the AO-51 passes Saturday evening
(somewhere on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, inside Grand
Canyon National Park), and may be on AO-27 and/or SO-50 from
grids DM34 and/or DM35 after the hamfest on my way toward grid
DM36.
If you work WD9EWK on Saturday, either from the Prescott Hamfest
or from some other location later in the day, I will be happy to
send you a QSL card (or cards) to confirm the contact(s). Please
e-mail me directly the details for each QSO, and - if you're in
the log - I will mail you the card(s). No need to send me QSLs
or SASEs for my activity on Saturday.
