Hello Jerry,

The rigs must have a computer control capability.
Lotsa modern rigs can be computer controlled.
Like the IC-706 family, IC-703+, IC-910H, and some of the Yaesu rigs,
FT-736R and later.
Kenwoods like the TS-2000, etc.

Look at the rig manual and see if it can be computer controlled.
Some rigs need a RS-232 connection to a computer via a null modem cable.
Others need an interface box like the ICOM CT17 for electrical level
conversion from RS-232 levels.

Older rigs may not have a computer control capability.

What rigs do you want to be computer controlled ??

Hi!

Dayton was, once again, a fun time. I was here in 2006, and this
year was so much better. I tried to keep track of satellite operators
who I worked over the past 3+ years and met over this weekend by taking
photos of them, but I lost count of the number I met and talked with
here (this is *not* a bad thing). AMSAT's events were great! I mixed
in some operating this weekend, between Friday and today, and in all of
that trying to test my new DJ-G7T HT. I previously posted a message
with my initial observations on that HT Friday night, and I'll add a
little (very little) to that here...

After the HamVention closed this afternoon, I had planned on working
some satellite passes with my new DJ-G7T HT after dropping stuff of
at my motel room. A western AO-27 pass was about to come by, and I
went to the Indiana/Ohio state line a couple of blocks from my motel
(I stayed in Richmond IN, not in Dayton, for this trip). In the
process of setting things up on a side road near the I-70/US-40
interchange, I pressed buttons on the HT in the band scope mode and
I could not decipher how to get out of that mode from a quick read of
the manual. I decided to set the radio aside, and worked the pass
using my IC-T7H HT I had also brought out there. After that, I
did a full reset of the HT, and figured I could try it again later.

After that AO-27 pass, I tried to retrace some of my 2006 post-Dayton
road trip to grid boundaries. I went northeast of Dayton, trying to
reach the EM79/EM89/EN70/EN80 boundary for one or two SO-50 passes.
This time, I could not get to that spot on the highway's right-of-way.
I crossed the road to get a clearer view of the sky, still on the
EM79xx/EN70xa line only a few feet/meters west of the 4-grid
intersection. :-( I set up for the first SO-50 pass, and this time I
accidentally pressed buttons on the DJ-G7T to put it into another
undesired mode - using a normal repeater offset on my uplink VFO. At
this point, I swapped radios and worked the pass using my IC-T7H again
for 4 QSOs. I decided not to fight the radio, and spend time parked or
standing along a highway to reread the manual trying to sort the radio
out. I'll do more testing with the new HT at home in the next few days,
while I try to get that speaker/mic cable so I can run full-duplex
without feedback.

After that SO-50 pass, I decided to work my way west, heading back
to the Indiana/Ohio state line and stopping for the later SO-50 pass.
I was able to get on from the EM79vx/EN70va line, working 7 stations
before the satellite went out of range. Then, the drive back to
Richmond IN and the motel for the night. I flew into Indianapolis
Thursday, and will return there tomorrow for my flight home.

Again, thanks to AMSAT for a great banquet and Saturday forum. Being
around other hams that share this corner of our hobby made this a
great weekend, and putting a few QSOs in my satellite log from 3
different locations over the past couple of days was a nice bonus.
I'll take more time working with the new HT over the next few days,
and especially during the upcoming long weekend. If anyone worked
WD9EWK this weekend and wants to get a QSL card from me, please
e-mail me the QSO information and I'll check that against my log.
If you are in my log, I'll send you a card - no need to send me a
card or SASE. I will need to prepare cards for those locations, and
I'm thinking about how to do a nice card in particular for the QSOs
I made at the Indiana/Ohio state line. And, yes, I'm still having
fun...

Hi Luc,

a linearly polarized antenna on a satellite means, that you will see
different polarization at different times and different locations on
Earth. Assume the satellites transmit vertical polarization but "tumbles"
then the polarization you are receiving is always linear but can vary
between vertical, diagonal, horizontal ...
Therefore it is better if the satellite and the station on earth both use
circular polarization. If this is not possible due to constraints on the
satellite I think it is still better to have a circular polarized antenna
at my station as the losses due to varying linear polarization will always
be only 3dB and thus no strong fading due to polarization will accur.
Please note that a tumbling satellite will most likely still generate strong
fading as the antenna on the satellite will never have a perfect
omni-directional behaviour.

Best regards

Hello,

recently I received some additional audio recordings and could thus
complement my "Sounds from Space" collection of satellite signals.

Many thanks to Rolf DK2ZF and Dave WB6LLO for providing their recordings.

You may have a look at www.dd1us.de at "Sounds from Space" and enjoy
listening to our satellites (present ones and those who are already gone).

If anyone of this group has some old tapes or other recordings please let me
know. I am still missing recordings from a couple of satellites and even for
those satellites, where I have already recordings, I am always looking for
additional interesting audio files.

Is there anybody on this list that uses HRD Satellite Tracking with a
Yaesu FT-847 and HRD version v4.1 build 1989 Technology Preview II.

After working with a couple of tracking programs I am very pleased with
this new software. I worked all the birds but one using HRD.

I only have one problem i can't work SO-50 the problem as far as I
understand has something to do with CTCSS and the 2 second carrier
with a PL tone of 74.4 to arm the timer and afterwards the 67.0 Hertz PL
tone to communicate via this bird.

Sometimes I can here some audio on the downlink when I transmit on the
uplink but not during the complete time that I transmit.

Can anybody give me some information that helps me solve this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Jan - PE0SAT

I am trying to install the FTDI driver (as per the LVB Tracker installation
instructions). I am downloading the VCP software successfully. (Win XP, 2.93
Ghz processor, 1.5 Gn RAM)

I click on the CDM release info Word Document, and the Windows Installer
box pops up "preparing to install". I then get a Word error message "the
command cannot be performed because a dialogue box is open.Click ok, then
close open dialogue boxes to to continue". But no dialogue boxes are open!
If I move the cursor to the Wiindows Installer box's "cancel", the cursor
changes to an hourglass. If I click "ok" in the Word Error box, all the
windows close and I am taken back to the folder where the unzipped FTDI
download files reside. Any ideas?

Thanks

Patrick,

Are you working the sats with a single T7H? If so, how are you getting it
to uplink and downlink on different bands?

I really love my T7H for repeater and simplex work. For sats, I currently
only use it for RX and use a 2M mobile for TX. I'd love to consolidate to a
more portable setup.

Ok, I got the problem with the dialogue box figured out. (I had done a
system restore and had not re-installed Word 2003; that's why I was getting
the Windows installer box...duh! :-) )

Anyway, I got the USB driver installed now. And all this time I thought it
was a problem with the drivers, when it was actually the PC's operating
system!

Hi Justin!

I use just one T7H. I put the frequencies in the different band VFOs,
and then press the BAND button to switch before and after transmitting.
I also have an IC-W32A and other radios, but IMO the T7H receiver is
more selective and resistant to QRM than the W32A. That stayed back
in Phoenix, as I return home with two more radios than I had before the
Dayton weekend. :-)

It's probably not the ideal way to start out on the FM birds, using one radio
where you are having to do more work to transmit and go back to receive.
Other radios where you can program memory channels with TX and RX
frequencies in different bands (most Kenwood and Yaesu HTs, as well as
some older Icom HTs) are better to work with, if you want to simplify your
operating.
