I never really had the extra money but now I do. This would mainly be used
for the FM birds. Which do you like the best? The Elk or the Arrow antenna?
Going to order one in the next couple of days.

Hey Jerry,

Here, at my location and with my radios, the Elk out-performs the Arrow hands-
down.

It's also rated for higher transmit power.

It has a single feed point and, so, doesn't need a diplexer if you're just
using one dual-band radio, either semi- or full-duplex.

Contrary to posts on this very board from a few years ago, the Elk works
wonderfully well in full-duplex. You or anyone who's interested can contact me
directly if you'd like to hear a 4+ - minute recording of an AO-51 pass I made
using an Icom W32A HT in full-fuplex mode with my Elk. It includes contacts
literally from Canada to Mexico.

The Elk costs about one-third less than the Arrow - although you'll have to
spend less than a dollar for the PVC necessary to make a handle for it.

Most importantly for me, the Elk hears much, much better than my Arrow ever
did. My most recent proof came just this morning when I worked DJ8NY in CW on
AO-7 in Mode B - while hand-holding the Elk inside my house on the second
floor and pointing it at a windowless wall. Germany is my fourth European
country in the past two weeks on AO-7 using the Elk in that fashion.

What might be more important for you, since you're planning to use it only for
the FM satellites, is that its elements are all in the same plane. Since two
of the three satellites (AO-27 and SO-50) are equipped with 0-gain quarter-
wave verticals, you may find them easier to track with the Elk for that
reason. I have. And that has been truse without any sacrifice in performance
when working AO-51. It actually hears AO-51 better than my Arrow did, too.

ALL of that being said ... the Arrow does, indeed, work. I used one to earn
Satellite VUCC, all handheld. However, I have no doubt that the Elk works
better - for me, at least. I would have earned VUCC with it if I'd known about
it when I started out working the satellites. I didn't, and so bought an Arrow
because "everyone else was using one." They were, and many still are. But for
me, there is no question that the Elk is the better choice - in performance
and in price.

I hope this helps. Best of luck no matter which antenna you decide to go with.

I know one thing. I just recently installed a 5500 and a seperation kit?with 4
ft. seperation between rotors.? I calibrated both rotors at north/zero degrees
and installed the antennas. With the antennas mounted and elevation moved to
45 degrees, the antennas moved down 45 degrees?towards?ground. No matter how I
installed the antennas they always elevated downward. I know I wired it right.
I stood on a ladder for 10 minutes looking and just staring wondering what was
wrong or what I did. I finally?positioned the elevation rotor 180 degrees
around the mast, duh. There may be a reason for showing the setup picture such
as it is.

I am not aware of any, however, if your Blackberry can run Java apps, I'd be
curious to know how my son's Java AO-27 Schedule Lister works on it... you
can download it at http://sites.google.com/site/ao27satellitescheduler

Hey everyone,

Wow ... the interference was brutal on that last pass (AO-27 "turned on"
during the 20:04 UTC minute).

Before we lost AO-27 last September, I remember it being routine to hear
Spanish-speaking stations that obviously were not ham-related on passes to my
west. Several of us used to joke about the "Taxi drivers south of the border."

This just sounded like a very strong carrier, although I did hear a few beeps
and blips here an there, suggesting the possibility of some kind of digital
transmission.

Here's hoping it was an anomaly.

I'm not sure that V/S is a good idea, with the extreme Doppler
shift. Take Drew's suggestion and get some time scheduled on the
second transponder for D-STAR (preferably on mode V/U). Having it in
the schedule means the rest of the world can give it a try as well. :)

These are easy to build from easily available parts. GIve it a try.

Not a tracking one, but one that can send and receive APRS mssages I think.
We hope someone will write these kinds of APRS messaging applications on all
wireless devices so hams can stay in touch by callsign anywhere, any time.

See the Blackberry link on the Universal Ham Text Messaging Initiative
www.aprs.org/aprs-messaging.html

OOPs, I thought he was thinking APRS tracking... sorry, I see now it is OSCAR
tracking... and we are here on the AMSAT-bb and not the APRSSIG... But
anyway, the Universal Text messaging objecive is across all platforms and all
services, so it will apply to AMSAT operators too who need to text message
someone else anywhere anytime using any device they may have in their hands.

But has anyone come up with a mechanical design for these that's as

If you're not going to take advantage of those features of the two
ready-made antennas, then the cheap antennas seem to very good.

Hello to all in the northern hemisphere.

It is well known that AO-27 is only activated for limited periods in the

heard? Also, is it only activated near North America or is it turned on

No CrackBerry solution for you but I recommend PocketSat + on any old Palm
or PocketPC

These old Palm's are available for free for the asking. If you are a
smartphone or RIM user you probably had a Palm and it is now stuck in a
drawer some where. Or, just ask around those who are using the newer PDA's
to see if they have an old one lying around.

I just sold my oldest Palm at a ham flea market 2 weekends ago for $10CN and
kept my still really old Palm IIIxe just for PocketSat and Field Day use.

To the Gentleman wondering about tracking on a cellphone.

Try this ...

<http://www.k0sm.com/_mgxroot/page_10732.html>

I've been using it 'portable' for two years now and it's an excellent little
program which 'agrees'
totally with both NOVA and InstantTRACK - (providing you update the keps every
fortnight or so).

Several references to it can also be found on the OBSERVATIONS page at ...

<www.observations.biz>

(Observations from Norway).

I hope that helps.

I have my cellphone attached to the handle of the Arrow aerial with a standard
car dashboard
cellphone holder so that when I wave my 'pointy stick' at the sky I can 'see'
where to point.

What if the locals *DO* think I'm bonkers? ... who cares !!.

Hi David.

I live in the southern part of the state of Florida, and from my
observations, it seems AO-27 turns on when it's near the center of the
USA. From looking at the footprint, that puts me in range for perhaps
5 minutes, and most of Mexico for about the same amount of time. This
of course is when the bird is usable for me.

You can check the official AO-27 homepage, where there is a link for
the status of the satellite for a 24 hour period here:
