FYI for operators using the IC-970 radio. I blew my AG-25 preamp once as
a result of switching the satellite mode knob while PTT was still
engaged. I never tried to duplicate this action of course, but it seems
the radio logic got confused during the change and the sequencer did not
kill the TX power.

I think it is less important to worry about technology that can't be
hacked and more important to devise a scheme to locate the source of an
interferer be it deliberate or accidental. With a bent pipe transponder
scheme, if there are two or more satellites having overlapping
footprint, you can monitor the downlink of each satellite and derive a
time of arrival fix from each. Do some trig and get a fix on the
possible locations. I am sure this is exactly what the DOD is doing to
locate these pirates.

Or... it's time to finally realize that all encryption in Amateur Radio
isn't "bad" and start working toward rules that allow for encryption for
purposes of authentication for users on Amateur frequencies. AMSAT and
the international community of Satellite Amateurs already has this
exemption for command/control of the birds, and has had it in the U.S.
FCC regulations for a very long time. But it's probably time to "move
on" and start developing the political will to add in appropriately
worded encryption allowances for all to use for specific purposes, like
authentication/access to our infrastructure -- whatever that might be...
a satellite, a repeater, whatever we CHOOSE to use it for, as long as
it's limited to the authentication, and not for encryption of the
CONTENTS of the communication.

Part 97 is "close", but not quite there yet. Not sure there's enough
political will to (yet) make it happen, either.

Can't really attempt to create a "clearinghouse" of authentication
information until the law allows the basics, though. And yes, there's a
HUGE number of pitfalls and problems with that NEXT step... but the
first step is to allow Amateurs to continue to do what we do best...
experiment.

The Internet has already figured these questions out -- how to
authenticate people, and to reserve shared infrastructure for only those
authorized to use it... unfortunately, we're limited by the law into NOT
being able to even try things on the Amateur bands...

That leads logically to the next question -- what are you going to do
when you find them? Do you expect International government support to
send resources out to the location and shut down the offending station?
How much are you (and the rest of the world) willing to pay for this?

Better to lock the front door of the house, than to have to go wandering
the rooms, listening for the yahoos that came in the back door and are
eating your potato chips up in your kid's bedroom.

As it becomes easier for the general public to get their hands on uplink
gear cheaply, and to operate it with virtually zero knowledge of how it
actually works -- the front-end of the birds must have a way to
discriminate between "authorized" and "unauthorized" users...
eventually.

On-orbit infrastructure is too valuable to have it act as a "bent-pipe"
in an environment where the uplink/downlink gear is easy to acquire and
use.

See previous note on possible uses of encryption technology along with
decentralized authentication data... and more importantly, how much we'd
be willing to pay for such authentication infrastructure... in our time
to set it up, and in real money to have it accessible via the Net to
all. Not cheap, but then again -- real security never is.

Nate,

Considering the infrastructure of the national power grid has been hacked
into, how do you feel your statement is true?
And is it worth it to make another hurdle for the new, not as well informed,
sat user trying to access a bird for the first time?

Does anyone have a suggestion to locate a simple procedure to upload
files to a site?..

Roadrunner had one for years, and I've been keeping files I've
acquired throughout the years in operating hamsats since good old OSCAR..

No fancy graphics, no pictures, just *.exe, *.jpg, *.zip, *. txt and
that sort of thing using ftp

Roadrunner still has the space available free, but it will not let me
upload the above.

Any suggestions appreciated....

You are saying that RR *won't* permit files of those types be transferred?
If I have that right, RR is whacked and you need to find another ISP.
Apologies to RR right now if I got that wrong.

The first and most stupid suggestion would be to rename a .exe file
to .x or something, upload it and then rename it remotely.

Another alternative would be to get ssh for Windows (thats what you
use, I think?) and use the "sftp" encrypted ftp to move things. It is
slower, however than a normal insecure ftp.

I'm hoping that you're crashing into some other problem and it isn't
that you aren't allowed to upload.

I use Filezilla. If you're a Linux man then you already have an FTP client
provided.
If your ISP doesn't allow you to FTP into your web space, get another
IPS/hosting company.

Hi Bob,

Missed you on the western pass just now. I worked WC7V in DN45, and heard a
very familiar sounding "Hola!", but didn't catch the call sign. The rest of
the pass was me calling CQ, all the way down to about 2 degrees above the
north-western horizon.

Hi Dave,

As others have noted, every major operating system out there has an FTP
client, but apparently that's not all that's required. What sort of error or
denial message are you getting? That will guide the next step.

Some providers do restrict filetypes that may be used to propagate
downloadable worms/virii.

Also, here at work we have normal FTP access, but discourage its use
in favour of SFTP as userid/passwords are sent over the network in
the clear with normal FTP.

Bye for now, John

Although it does say that the P6 truss arrived several years before the P3, P4
and P5 to which it is connected so the
details seem a bit astray.

Yeah i've been watching it too off and on.

Too bad they diddn't have it running near the equinox. last night I
watched the sun pass vbehind the earth, it passes above the north pole now.

The camera seems l;ike it will be sensitive enough once the sun is
blocked to actually see light pollution, because when it was way off to
one side,, say the earth ws 20% lit or so i was actually seeing some
stars in the background even.

Pretty cool
