This brings up an ongoing complex issue.? That being antenna gain.? I build L
& S band antennas and I know it is better off the front than the back.?
Depending on which formula you use, what standard you use, or who you want to
believe.? For the number aficionado this can be a delirious situation.? If I
remember right QST does not publish antenna gain of their advertisers.? ?I
hasten back to Mr. Lowe's remark, "it works".? When calculating link budgets
this is indeed a numbers game.

I have called Mr. Lowe in the past and asked him if he knew what gain his
Arrow dual band satellite antenna, was getting on both bands, his response
was; it works, that's all I know! ?(so I didn't push the issue)

Now I am curious again, has anyone here tested and or calculated what the gain
is, on the Arrow dual band (2 meters & .70 cent.) hand held satellite antenna,
either or both bands?

I had one customer bring his Arrow Antenna back for a refund. "This
design cannot possibly work!" he, an engineer, declared.

Since it was now "open stock," I bought it myself. And am using it to
this day for presentations and demos. Successfully ...

I haven't measured it. I would imagine it is somewhere between 6db and
12db gain on either band. It "captures" SO-50 and AO-51 so well that
you almost feel like you are "cheating..." - but I am preachin' to the
choir here.

>> ... Depending on which formula you use, what standard you use, or

I remember when Antennex came out with their low-profile "Phantom"
antennas. They didn't like established procedures for acquiring gain,
which showed (on the 460mHZ unit) Zero gain.

So - honest to gawd - they came up with their OWN formula and that
little 4" antenna now has 3db gain!

And let's not get started with manufacturer's published gain figures
for handheld antennas ... (grin)

There are two holes in the top of the case. Looking at the front panel of the
radio as you would use it, the "reset" switch is under the LEFT hole. Turn the
power off, and slide the switch to the LEFT for approx 30 seconds. This will
clear all memories and reset the microprocessor. Slide it back to the RIGHT,
and power up the radio, and reprogram it.
This is on page 12 of the FT-736R manual I have.

I did the reset but has not fixed my problem.

When I press the F button to set the Rpt up/down it does not change
it from simplex and 01 comes up in the display to the right of the vfo

Any suggestions?

I'm looking for any paper or article that compares performance of 70cm and 2M
antennas in attic environments. Preferably where multiple antennas were tested
in the same location in the same attic area. I'm particularly interested in
antennas such as the Arrow, eggbeater, a typical turnstile, Texas Potato
Masher, quadrifiler type, the newer Cantenna, a ground plane, etc.
Can anyone help me out?

Hi Bill,

One other thing is to focus on the beginning and end of the passes, versus the
center. The rate of change in the Doppler shift is the worst right at the
middle of the pass (time of closest approach). Similarly, low elevation
passes have less shift change than higher ones, and higher orbit satellites
(e.g. AO-07) have less shift change than low orbit ones (e.g. VO-52).

Another thought is to use your own RIT to compensate for the other station's
change, especially on the birds with 2m uplinks. That way you can hear him
clearly without changing your own uplink.

Announcing you're running HDX will help if the operator on the other end is
experienced. An inexperienced operator probably has enough to worry about,
without trying to understand what to do with this new challenge. I worked an
HDX operator a long time ago on RS-12/13, I think, and was puzzled why he was
so difficult to work. Then I got his QSL card, listing the equipment, and
understood. It was odd enough that I remember the contact to this day.

Best wishes (that you find a second rig...),

using a single IC-7000 controlled by SatPC32. I've made several contacts, but
it has been quite difficult. Obviously the best remedy is to get a second rig
and run full duplex, but in the meantime, does anyone have any tips for
successful half-duplex operation?

Does anyone do Satellite packet? If so what kind of TNC is needed. Can a
Kam KPC-3+ used for VHF packet work? or do you need a different TNC.?
Are there many birds that forward messages around the globe like years
ago when pacsats were famous?

Thanks

As a tangential response, our next satellite which will do the
same APRS packet relay as PCSAT and the ISS will use the new
Byonics all-on-a-board Packet TNC/Radio/Telemetry system. This
makes it possible to build a packet satellite out of a single
3.4" square board and 5 NiCd' batteries and that is all you need
for a tiny APRS satellite.

The board is called the MT-TT4 which is a Microtracker APRS
system. It has a transceiver, and not just a transmitter. It
has all the functions of a KPC-3 including APRS digipeating,
APRS telemetry and it even has a KEYBOARD interface and a
MULTI-LINE text display for APRS messaging. See
http://www.byonics.com/microtrak/mt-tt4.php

We are ordering a bunch of them on the APRS Space Channel of
145.825 and hope to encourage other schools and universities to
consider including one of these packet transponders in their
missions. If we can get up to a dozen of these in space, we
will have almost global coverage 24 hours a day from anywhere on
the planet!

> Can a Kam KPC-3+ used for VHF packet work?

Absolutely. It is one of the best TNC's for setting up an APRS
digipeater. Look at the USA map in this month's QST to see the
whole USA coverage map for APRS. If your area does not have
good converage, please consider setting up a digipeater to serve
travelers when they are in your area.

> Are there many birds that forward messages
> around the globe like years
> ago when pacsats were famous?

Not really, but the ISS, and PCSAT and the others we hope to fly
do something similar, but the messages are not "forwarded" but
are LIVE anywhre on the planet. Any packets relayed in the
footprint, are picked up by volunteer grounds sattions and fed
live into the internet where they go everywhere on the globe.
Then the go from the internet back to RF in the area of the
intended recepient. Please take a look at this Universal Ham
Radio Text Messaging System: www.aprs.org/aprs-messaging.html

Hi Mike,

> Can a Kam KPC-3+ used for VHF packet work?

Your TNC should work well ... monitor on 145.800 and 145.825 MHz with
PASSALL = ON in the TNC. The 145.825 frequency is the one usually used for
spacecraft APRS packet but the ISS has been on 145.800 up & down for
digipeating this past week.

While the syntax of the commands you type into your TNC may differ from the
examples I used for an MFJ TNC-2 you can likely get on the air with the
settings I have summarized at:
http://home.comcast.net/~k9jkm/ARISS_Packet_How_To/

ISS digi is workable with less than 5 watts and a 2M vertical. PCSAT is
workable when its in full sunlight and I generally have better luck with a
small (3-element) 2M beam on that bird.

Hello,

I am new here in forum. There are 4 days I am trying to communicate with
Yuri, UT1FG via AO -7, but not know why he did not answer me. The signal is on
average 5 / 7 and I hear on the satellite downlink signal to very good. The
first time I heard it was between the coast of Africa and Europe he called in
his local language. Do not really know what is happening. I am very willing to
talk with him and get that hard contact.
