It only has one feedline because it's only one antenna whereas the Arrow is
two seperate antennas.
If you want preamps for both bands and want to use the antenna to transnit
then you'll need a pair of diplexers and RF
relays to bypass the preamp on the Tx side.

, as this antenna has only one feedline, is there any way to mount preamps for
both 70cm and 2m?

Our satellite is actually a nanosat, with 50cm by 50cm by 60cm (W x L x
H), so we do have enough space to use two patch antennas.
Would you like to explain more about the receiver noise temperature ?
I'm having a hard time estimating how much effect the noise temperature
has on a link.
Thank you.

Is the Elk Antenna better than a Arrow ant?? Thats my loaded question but
not the subject of this email.

How do you use a puter to tune your radios?? Newbie wants to know!!

I didn't get a chance to try any of the birds tonite. Dialysis did a number
on me today.

I want to thank youu guys for the help you have given me when I ask about
something. Its a learning experience with each diguest I get. Thanks!!!

I've never heard anything on AO7 yet.

I asked the arrow vs elk question a while back and it sparked quite a
discussion, so I suggest looking back in the archive :)

For the linear transponder Satellites I have found with my IC 820H using the
main tuning dial to adjust receive and switching that side and adjust for
transmit works the best during Field Day operations. The I-Com is just to
clumsy to use the sub receiver, RIT does not have enough range, no easy way
to adjust the offset, transmit power, ETC. I calculate the offset VS time
using Instant Track in advance and work off of paper data. I set the
elevation of the mast to match the pass and a single rotator performs both
elevation and azimuth functions.

If we had a HEO I would consider buying something better than the 820, but
for now I drag out the old 820 and make a few contacts for W6NWG each year
at FD, and that is the extent of my satellite activity.

Before the advent of computer Doppler tuning compensation, the
convention was to tune the radio on the highest band as that is where
the doppler is the largest and to leave the other one alone as much as
possible. That is not a perfect solution as different stations in the
footprint see different Doppler shifts and it is usually unavoidable
to tweak both radios. But you can generally save yourself a lot of
confusion by only tuning one radio, the highest one, whether it be
receive or transmit.

If you are using a computer for tracking, it should also give you the
doppler correction even if you are not controlling the radios with it
and you should find your downlink without too much trouble. It is
confusing at first, but after a while you get hte hang of it and it
becomes second nature.

If you can catch AO-7 in Mode A, that is a good mode to practice
Doppler compensation with as the doppler shifts are much lower. - Duffey

Aloha

I have tackled a new (older) radio for use in communicating with ISS, PCSAT
and
FM satellites. I am using the Kenwood TM-D700A in the non-TNC mode in
conjunction
with AGWPE, UISS and UIVIEW software (UIVIEW facilitating my Satgate).
I have run a mini-din cable from the Kenwood to a Rascal mixing device then to
an external soundcard. There are several reasons I have done this; foremost is
the
fact that UISS is so user friendly. Also, the signal coming off the minidin is
supposed
to be much cleaner than running the radio's speakers out (a telemetry
requirement
for many of the cubesats). This setup works for not only packets but other
software
types such as WXTOIMG.

My apparent problem is that the signal does not appear to have high enough
gain.
For instance, when I view the sine wave in AGWPE it is minimal and cannot be
adjusted by radio or computer volume. The percent volume indicator in WXTOIMG
also lingers on the bottom "edge" at around 41 percent. Perhaps these
indicators
are irrelative, I am not sure. If someone has used the minidin out for such
purposes
and could educate me a bit I would be eternally grateful....(well amost HIHI).

And yes, I realize that the radio itself is probably capable is doing many of
these
things on its own!!

If interested in tutoring please contact me at dukenuke@xxxx.xxx. Mahalo and
73 to everyone.

Hey Jerry,

There are a number of software packages available that will allow you to
connect one or two radios to your computer and provide Doppler-tuning through
the program.

Here, I have installed and set up three of them - Orbitron, SatPC 32 and Ham
Radio Deluxe's Beta kit with Satellite Traker - because I wanted to compare
them and see how each performs. All three are available free for download,
installation and use. However, it is possible to purchase a license for SatPC
32; and here in the U.S., the proceeds from that licensing goes to AMSAT, so
it's another way to support the organization.

I use an Acer Aspire One netbook with an Intel Atom processor. It's not "the
incredible hulk" of computing power, but it has more than enough to handle any
of these programs. It also came with Windows XP. I have never used Vista and
don't intend to. I've heard too many horror stories about it, although I know
that many people use it without any issues.

My station uses two radios to achieve full duplex - one for transmit and one
for receive. I connect each of them to the computer via USB cable and tell the
programs which is which. Although each of the three programs is slightly
different in terms of setup, none of them are difficult to use. And all of
them work.

About your first question - I have used the Arrow and the Elk extensively.
Both work. Here, at my location, with my station, the Elk is better.

I hope this helps, and I hope you're feeling better!

73,

Tim - N3TL

Hello The Net:

Yuri does QSL.

As a ARRL Award card checker I have processed a number of his QSL cards.

I do not have his QSL address.

He will be the ONLY opportunity to work unpopulated wet grids. On VHF
and Satellite.

As a grid chaser, work 'em and worry about the QSL confirmation later.

I am absolutely tickled that Yuri is back in range and operating.

Hey Jerry and welcome to the birds,

I've been more of a listener than a user for the past few years with a
few flurries of activity. I am getting active again myself.

I own an Arrow to be used with the D7 or VX-8 but that has been mostly
procrastination to date.

As to software, I have tried all the free packages and all are
relatively decent. I used, and registered, SatPC32 for the most part
and found it very good. I particularly like the fact that it will
drive multiple radio types, e.g. an FT-817 and an IC-706Mk2g, or any
combination of the typical DC-daylight multi-modes available today.
The learning curve was a tad long for me but that may just be me. All
apps have their quirks and nuances. Since I have bailed from all
things Windows wherever possible, I now use MacDoppler and really like
it though it will not drive the multi-mode HF/V/U radios as does
SatPC32. Both MacDoppler and SatPC32 licenses are available at AMSAT
for a discount.

That said. The tracking software one uses depends largely upon
equipment. If you are planning to use AZ/EL rotors you need a package
that includes the rotor drivers for your controller. None of them work
with all rotor controllers. If you plan the hand-held antenna/ HT
route you may only need something like PocketSat+, an older Windows
Mobile app that displays tracks only. It works well in my smartphone
and other hand-held computers.

Good DX via AO-7

This week AO-7 continued to surprise and delight amateur radio satellite
operators with opportunities for good DX. On April 12 Tim, N3TL reported,
"At 21:33 UTC today G1WPR answered my "CQ DX"
on AO-7 Mode B. I was sending CW with the straight key I picked up for
Straight Key Night on AO-51, and Terry called me in SSB so we completed a
cross-mode QSO of more than a minute with a few exchanges. I am thrilled!"

Tim also logged more trans-Atlantic AO-7 QSOs on April 16, "PH7PCF in the
Netherlands answered my CW "CQ DX" with a hello in SSB. Then, a couple of
minutes later, F2IL returned my CW in some CW from France.
What a hoot!"

The equipment at N3TL consists of a Yaesu FT-857D for TX and a Yaesu
FT-817ND for RX (both used radios). He uses a Diamond MX-72H duplexer to
connect them to a dual-band Elk log periodic, which is hand-held, manually
tracking the satellites. Computer doppler control was done with Simon's HRD
Satellite Tracker. Of the CW operation Tim described his setup, "I have the
"CQ DX" call set up in a memory buffer on my FT-857D. But when somebody
responds, the straight key takes over."

Turning 35 years old on November 15, 2009 AO-7 still carries lots of amateur
satellite traffic. Joe, K3SZH says Igor UA9CS Igor has now logged over 6000
QSOs via the bird. Also, this month Mike, KC9ELU has reached his 1000th QSO
via AO-7.

W0YPT Silent Key

AMSAT received the sad news that Telmer G. Olson, W0YPT became a silent key
at age 91 this week. Telmer had worked the satellites from the earliest
OSCARs to the modern satellites. Jerry, W0SAT remembered, "He elmered me
and helped me get on the satellites in 1996. I knew him as a great friend
that I called on for advice all the time. I used to visit him at his QTH and
went to hamfests with him too. I and all the people who ever had contact
with will always remember the many QSO,s and contacts we had with him."

I have been operating the linear sats over the past week on half-duplex, using
a single IC-7000 controlled by SatPC32. I've made several contacts, but it
has been quite difficult. Obviously the best remedy is to get a second rig
and run full duplex, but in the meantime, does anyone have any tips for
successful half-duplex operation?

One tip I received from NJ1H is to announce at the start that I am running
half duplex, since most stations manually adjust the uplink so that the
downlink stays constant. If the other station knows I am running half-duplex,
he should adjust the downlink instead of the uplink.

Any other suggestions?

Yuri, UT1FG/MM was on VO-52 Sunday morning from FM91. QSL route is Direct to
his home QTH via QRZ.com. But keep in mind he is at sea many months at a time
and won't get home for a while. This years sea adventures have just started
and he is working his way down to the Caribbean.

I am absolutely tickled that Yuri is back in range and operating.

they don't help with any awards or anything unless the operator will provide a
QSL card. My understanding is that he's next-to impossible to get QSLs from.
He's not unique in that regard, but I just can't get too fired up about
working guys from grids that I likely won't ever get confirmed.
