?Hey Bill and all,

I have version 4.1, I believe it's build 1895 (it's on another computer), and
it's very plainly labeled as a Beta. I presumed in deciding to download it
that there could be some issue.?

Here, however, there have been none - at all. It opens, runs (including Google
Earth), does everything smoothly and without even the slightest problem.

As mentioned, I'm running it on an Acer Aspire One Netbook, which has an Atom
processor and XP home edition.?

Also have negative experience with Vista and HRD satellite, but not the luxury
of going back to XP. In my case it works, but if I try and control two radios
(as it does easily on XP), one updates frequencies for doppler nicely, and the
other either not at all, or only once a minute or so. All I have to do to
catch things up is uncheck one or the other radio.

Not a programmer but perhaps some overhead in controlling the ports? I have
serial ports as well as USB converters. Doesnt seem to matter which I use.

SATPC32, by comparison, seems to work fine, but I really like some of the Sat
features of HRD and am sad I cant use them anymore.

Andy,

We talked way back in 1998 when you were onboard MIR and I had set up a
satellite station at Fulmore Middle School for a contact in Austin, TX

There seems to be a bad bug in HRD in that it doesn't properly control the
910H in satellite mode. A new satellite module for HRD has been promised for
mid-March, so in programming time, that's any month now.

Andy,

This is more or less the same problem that I found with HRD and the Icom
910 over two years ago - it was reported and its on the list to be fixed.

I use SatPC32 now :-D

Tim,

The USB-serial interface seems to be the weak link in almost all computer-to-
radio programs I've seen. Could you tell me exactly which interface you are
using with the Acer, where you bought it, and, if not plug and play, where did
you get the driver?

We bought one of those little Acer notebooks but are not using it for ham
radio. I thought it was a great deal for $350 and now I'm seeing them for as
low as $250.

Yes, with luck I'll start fixing the IC-910H problem in the Tech Preview in
a couple of weeks.

In a few days I'll be putting together a beta of HRD 5.0 for the internal
test team, then I will run through these bugs.

Andy,

I run IT150 and it also does not control the 910 in satellite mode. Turn
off satellite mode and it works wonderfully. Icom seems to have done a nice
job on the radio but did a very poor job on the documentation.

Yes, but remember that the accuracy of the cut for 1/2 wavelenth lets say at
435 MHz probably has to be within say 1/2 inch to not introduce more loss than
it would gain in the first place. But for two 1/2 wavelenghts, the accuracy
has to be 1/4 inch. For 10 feet (about 10 half waves) you have to make the
cut within about 0.05 inches. Make that 50 feet, an dnow your exact length
has to be within about 0.01 inches.

Now lets say that you somehow get extremely lucky and get the exact length
just perfect. That was only at one temperature. I t would not seem
unreasonable to me for a big change in temperature to make more than a 1%
chane in velocity factor and then the cable will be out of phase and worse.

Oh, and if you change frequency by even a few Hz, then the length changes
again, so... the mutiple-halv-wave feed line only is practical at HF. Nothing
above say 6 meters is even worth considering because of too many varaibleas
beyond your control..

SOmething like that.

Bob, Wb4APR

I'm guessing it will not be too
>hard on HF but could be a bit tricky on 1.2ghz? eg: How far from each cut
frequency the cable will retain this 52 ohms matching?

Interesting. My problems are ALSO restricted to my USN to Serial interface.
The one serial port on each computer works flawlessly.

Tim,

The USB-serial interface seems to be the weak link in almost all
computer-to-radio programs I've seen. Could you tell me exactly which
interface you are using with the Acer, where you bought it, and, if not plug
and play, where did you get the driver?

We bought one of those little Acer notebooks but are not using it for ham
radio. I thought it was a great deal for $350 and now I'm seeing them for
as low as $250.

Ditto here. The TX radio does not seem to be interfacing in a timely
fashion with HRD, which updates the TX radio when it finally does sense that
transmitting is occurring.

Also have negative experience with Vista and HRD satellite, but not the
luxury of going back to XP. In my case it works, but if I try and control
two radios (as it does easily on XP), one updates frequencies for doppler
nicely, and the other either not at all, or only once a minute or so. All I
have to do to catch things up is uncheck one or the other radio.

Not a programmer but perhaps some overhead in controlling the ports? I have
serial ports as well as USB converters. Doesnt seem to matter which I use.

SATPC32, by comparison, seems to work fine, but I really like some of the
Sat features of HRD and am sad I cant use them anymore.

Running a new Lenovo desktop with Windows Vista.

way to get it working properly with Vista (32 bit version)?
