Different faults have different characteristics. This one lost it's battery
which is now open circuit allowing the
satellite to operate from solar cells when it's in sunlight.

I know the batteries are dead, but I'm primarily interested

Most of the dead sats are still in orbit and being tracked. It's in a higher
orbit than most amateur sats and, like all
the others in a similar orbit, will take many tens of years to re-enter.

Yes, but the higher the orbit, the longer will be "eventually"

I somehow doubt AO-7 has any

AO7, like most amateur satellites, never had any boosters.

My experience with a set of M2 eggbeater antennas (EB-144 and EB-432) has
exceeded all my expectations. My antennas are about 20 feet in the air (just
about roof-ridge height) and behind tree canopy for about 180 deg az. I have
a pair of Icom preamps and 30' of good quality coax. I run about 75 watts
with an Icom IC-910H.

Results with ISS are excellent on all modes (U/V, V/U, voice, packet, and
SSTV). I get full quieting above about 5 deg and have worked Mike Fincke and
received SSTV right down to the horizon.

I have also had good results on FO-29, VO-52 and AO-51.

I would echo the comments of Jim KQ6EA with regard to the CopperWeld wire.
Be careful.

Of course, your mileage may vary, but I am very pleased.

I ran into odd problems with my 847 i made a full reset and all theses problem
disappear but at a cost i lost all my memory channel and
settings. Just be sure all the available trouble shooting options has been

Before I throw it on craig's list...

I have two spools of 75 ohm hardline meant to go from telephone pole to
telephone pole. The spools are about 3 feet in diameter. I don't know how
much is on them. It isn't very thick stuff. It might be 1/2 inch?

If you can help me get it out of my basement, YOU CAN HAVE IT!

Dear Friends,

I have done a lot of testing and the FT-847 has a
bug on the CAT interface which causes it to sometimes
"freak out" for no apparent reason. It returns garbage
in CAT commands and just doesn't will not work correctly.

This requires a power cycle to clear. There is no
chance of getting this fixed so you just have to be
aware of it when using computer control. Fortunately,
it does not seem to occur too often.

Hi Sebastian,

Filling in the details from others...

AO-10 is still in orbit, but the electronics appear to be mostly toast. The
control computer was fried by radiation years ago, due to it being in an odd
orbit because of a partial booster failure. The radios still worked for a
while, but it was became erratic with good days and bad, more bad than good.
Last time it was heard was a number of years ago, but there's still a chance
it will be heard from time to time.

AO-13 is no longer in orbit. Both AMSAT and NASA learned that there are some
orbits that don't last long, because of a "resonance" in the timing of their
orbit compared to the orbits of the Moon and the Earth going around the Sun.
The result was that the satellite got a little "cosmic tug" in its orbit,
slowly pushing it into the planet below. Not good.

Many others have been lost due to battery or electronic failures, including
for a while, AO-07. But after 21 years on the "dead" list, AO-07's batteries
opened up and the electronics (which somehow survived all those years) woke
back up on solar power alone.

Thanks for the replies. I have been playing with Sat Track all day, using a
Lenovo T61 laptop running Windows XP Pro connected to an IC-7000, in Single
Radio mode. It appears that there are issues with Sat Track even with this
OS. Unlike with Vista, everything opens quickly and it never uses even close
to 100% of memory.

However, the program immediately freezes and becomes non-responsive if I click
on Google Earth. More importantly, it sometimes becomes non-responsive when I
click on TX, and the radio stays on transmit until I close the program. Also,
sometimes the frequencies get mixed up. It will transmit on the downlink
frequency or receive on the uplink frequency.

Is the Sat Track beta "technology preview" still buggy or am I doing something
wrong?

I had the same experience this evening Jerry. I listened in to a late
night pass of VO52 for some CW activity but no luck. Again, loud
stations heard including one in Denver but no CW.

Right now, I'd settle for that ole RS series bird where you worked it

starting to date myself now. :-)

"The Sapphire satellite, being built by SSTL for Canada's Department of

As a practice target could be AO-40 can be a prime choice? Very small and with

Quite funny and nice offer...

I just finish and succeed to install/fit a PL-259 connector on this type of
CATV heliax using plumbing adaptor compression fittings. The
second step is to try to have them installled on our 52 ohms devices... If you
already tested theses cable and found an easy and simple way
to have them match 52 ohms you will save us a lot of work.

What i want to do is the to have each length adjusted "CUT" for 1/2 wave
length at a specific frequency. I'm guessing it will not be too
hard on HF but could be a bit tricky on 1.2ghz? eg: How far from each cut
frequency the cable will retain this 52 ohms matching?

I have about more that 500 feets coming from my and neighbourgs back yards
when the CATV installers wants to put theses old lines in their
scrap container.

Debate is open!

P.S. If you see them around your back yards just ask them and offer them to
rolled up the line they are just cutting. They will be more
than happy to let you take them it is some work they will not have to do. You
can have some other extra roll already made by them if you
have the right timing as they change them at 10 years intervall or when the
technology evolution demands it.

I just got my ft-817 set up and would like to have the laptop take care of
frequency control and Doppler correction. I'm presently using predict on
linux and osx and would like to get a client running that will drive the cat
interface. What's available for this task and how can I set it up?

Thanks,

Eric

I'm totally bemused and confused by this. I can't control my up and downlinks
(happens to be on on VO-52) with my HRD setup/ IC-910H. It's in sat mode.

I set the centre frequencies in the tx box to 435.250 and rx box for 145.900
and tick the transponder box, and tune manually, but can't hear myself coming
back on cw and can't find the sig using the RIT function (+/- 1 KHz).

So keeping the transponder box ticked, I tick the vfo tx to 435.226 and rx to
145.924, can't hear myself, no change with rit, and HRD say I have a 24kHz RX
off set. if I click the up icon the vfo freqs change to the freqs set in the
transponder box.

There must be something very simple I'm doing wrong here!! Grateful for any
support.
