ISS Amateur Radio Status: April 1, 2009

Slow Scan TV Active on ISS
By Miles Mann WF1F,

MAREX-MG News	www.marexmg.org

Manned Amateur Radio Experiment

Hi everyone:

Slow Scan TV in active part time on ISS via the Kenwood VCH1 commander.
Flight participant Charles Simonyi has been intermittently talking and running
SSTV image from ISS this week.
Today I had my first two-way SSTV link with ISS and Charles. At 17:50 UTC
Charles was using 145.800/144.490 for voice and SSTV. I made a comment, I
liked the images he sent, and he began sending more images (manually).
Charles and I began talking and I told him I would send him an image and just
sit back and watch. In honor of the new commander Gennady Paldaka, I sent
Charles one of my favorite images that I had received from Gennady in December
1998.
Wow does time fly. In 1998 I went to Moscow to train a half dozen Mir
crewmember how sot install and use the Marex SSTV system. Nine years later
Gennady is back in space, let?s hope we can get more SSTV in the future.

SSTV Status:

We have two SSTV systems on ISS. One is the Kenwood VCH1 sstv microphone.
This is the system which th4 crew has been using the most. The system only
runs on AA batteries at this time due to flight safety limitations.

The second system is the Marex Software system called SpaceCam1. This system
will run manually for fully automatic. The software system has not been used
much because of a problem with the VOX cable that goes to the D700
transceiver. When the Vox cable is used the radio sticks in the Transmitting
mode until 3-minute watchdog timer expires. ARISS has tried two different
cables with the same results. The Vox gets its power from the D700 and it
appears the dc power has too much RF and is causing Vox circuit to keep the
radio stuck transmitting.

Marex is proposing a completely different VOC using that has been tested
extensively.

During the testing phase the ISS Slow Scan TV system may be intermittently
transmitting on the frequency 145.800 MHZ FM.

You may find that the WiSP web pages of JE9PEL / Mineo Wakita useful in
trying to get WiSP to work. In particular
http://www.ne.jp/asahi/hamradio/je9pel/wispvist.htm

I have attempted to install it on Vista Ultimate and it sort of installs but
I have not yet checked it with any hardware.

Good luck!

Thanks to John, K8YSE, for making the effort to activate multiple grids this
afternoon and evening (April 1st) that we don't hear on the satellites all
that often.

On his way north from Florida, K8YSE/M worked passes of AO-27 and AO-51 mobile
and portable from EM90, EM91, EM92 and EM93. I am very grateful for the chance
to work some new grids. Thanks again, John. I plan to return that favor
whenever I can.

Hi!

After some delay, I have printed and started sending out QSL cards
for all of my recent demonstrations and presentations:

17-23 February 2009: Yuma AZ hamfest, XE2/WD9EWK from Baja
California, and assorted stops in DM22 and DM32 around
this time.

14 March 2009: Scottsdale AZ hamfest

20 March 2009: ThunderBird Amateur Radio Club (Glendale AZ) demo

21-22 March 2009: day-trip to DM35/DM45 in northern Arizona

I spent a little more time designing QSLs for two of the locations
I operated from in Mexicali (Baja California) in February, and
needed time to get all the cards printed. Anyone who sent me a QSL
for any of these events will have an envelope going to the post
office tomorrow, and more cards will go out over the next few days.

Again, if anyone worked me during any of these events and wants to
receive a QSL card, please send me an e-mail directly with the QSO
details. If you're in the log, you'll get a card. For some QSOs,
I may include an SASE so I can get your QSL card - I'm starting
to work toward a VUCC from Baja California.

73!

Hi!

I will have an AMSAT table at the Radio Society of Tucson's "Desert-
Fest '09" hamfest on Saturday, 3 April 2009, in Tucson AZ. The
hamfest is at the Kino Sports Complex, east of the I-10 freeway on
Ajo Way - the same location as the Old Pueblo Radio Club's hamfest
in October. The hamfest opens at 0600 local (1300 UTC), and goes
until 1130 local (1830 UTC). More information about the hamfest can
be found at:

http://www.tucsonhamfest.com/

During the hamfest, WD9EWK will be on FM satellites and VO-52 for
demonstrations during those passes. This hamfest is located in
grid DM42me. If you hear me on any of those passes, please give me
a call. I always appreciate stations that show up and call me
during these events, as that makes the demonstrations a success for
those watching and listening to the activity on the radio.

After the hamfest, depending on my work scheduling for the weekend,
I *may* be able to travel away from Tucson to either the DM51/DM52
or DM52/DM53 grid boundaries in southeastern Arizona. This will
probably be a "game time" decision, and I will post my intentions
here once I am certain I will - or will not - have to return to
Phoenix to work on Saturday evening.

Thanks in advance, and 73!

Wisp32 works on Vista PCs. However, the hardware driver RR.DLL that comes
with Wisp32 doesn't work on NT based Windows systems (Win2000, XP, Vista -
a "kernel driver" is the only way to get hardware access on these systems).
So, you can use Wisp32 for data traffic, but for rotor and radio control you
need to simultaneously run a software that works on NT based systems.

Hey Patrick,

Thanks for the update, and thanks for all of your efforts to activate grids
from all over the desert southwest.

I haven't done this nearly as much as you, but I know that it takes planning
and some work to accomplish. It's a lot of fun to work a pass from (1) a
fairly nonactive grid or (2) a grid or state folks need, but the fun doesn't
mitigate the effort involved.

Thank you again for your regular trips. I appreciate them very much.

73 to all,

Hello to everyone!

I am searching for two Motorola MRF 309 power transistors available at decent
price.My amplifier built on the EB-67 bulletin (432 mHz)just passed away .I
found a source for those transitors but they were selling for the price of a
complete used amplifier!
Thanks in advance and 73s to all.

Hi Enzo,

I could give you measurements for the L-bracket on a Kenpro G-5500A
rotator if you like ,
and if nobody else has better information. I dont know if the A and B
versions are the same or not.

If you are going to make a new bracket, I suggest you do not make the
"L" bracket.
I heard that these broke easily and were replaced by a "U" bracket.

I have a "U" bracket that came with my Yaesu g 5400 rotor.

You can see a picture of this in the Yaesu 5500 rotor manual that you
can download from the yaesu website.

I have measured mine and have these measurements

length =4 3/4 inches
width = 4 1/4 inches

Vertical ends are 2 3/8 inches high

Holes are 1/2 and 3/4 inches in from the ends of the plate. (you will
have to mark these with your rotor to be sure).

Holes are 3/4 inch in diameter.
There is also rubber inserts/spacers in the mounting holes.

Slot in the middle of the bracket is 3 inches x 3/4 inches centered in
the middle of the plate.

It may be easier to just order one from your local amateur radio store
from Yaesu.

My manuals for the 5400 and 5500 do not give part numbers.

Hope this helps

Hi Tim!

You're welcome!

I have tried to get QSL cards sent out quickly after my trips in the past
year or so. I slipped behind on these cards, and some had mailed me
an SASE and also received a few e-mails asking about those cards.
I had not forgotten about the cards, and - for those contacts I made as
XE2/WD9EWK - I knew I would need to send out cards to get some in
return. My February trip won't get me a satellite VUCC by itself for my
operating on the Mexican side of DM22, but it could be a good start
toward that.

Correct.

There aren't as many resources for satellite operators to determine what is
a rare grid, unlike our counterparts in the 6m realm. I use e-mails with some
long-time satellite operators and web sites like the one WI7P (ex-N7SFI) has
to get some historical reference on grids. For more recent times, I have
e-mailed other operators to get their lists or maps of grids worked/confirmed
or some feedback on the topic. As for rare states, those seem to mirror
what you would expect to find on the HF bands or 6m.

To find locations that fall on grid boundaries, good atlases or maps with
latitude/longitude are a good start for that. Google Earth or Google Maps
are great. You can put latitude/longitude into those instead of an address,
and then look on those maps to see how accessible a particular location
happens to be.

For those of us who travel beyond our home countries or territories, then
you must add in another step - ensuring you have the appropriate license
or permit to operate from wherever you go. Some countries require no
application, others have a permit available for free simply by applying for
it, then there are others that want the paperwork and $$$. For my trip to
Mexico, that country definitely falls into the last category (US$ 80 for the
6-month permit when I applied in February, then another US$ 18 for a
"tourist card" entry visa - you don't have to pay for that separately if you
fly into Mexico).

> Thank you again for your regular trips. I appreciate them very much.

After last year focusing on working from different grids, I might try to find
some interesting places or places with interesting names to work from
during 2009. If I get the chance to go to other unusual grids, I won't
pass up the chance. And, yes, I'm still having fun. :-)

73!
