Hi Mark,

The mode A beacon was always very strong here but I have not heard it for
the last few days. The last telemetry I copied was 17 March at 0900 UT.

Hi All,

It seems to me that perhaps AO-7 has been in mode A but the 435 beacon
hasn't been on...can anyone confirm my observations?

Thanks,

Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

My last official act as chair of ARRL SDR committee was to agree to chair
the
SDR FORUM at the Dayton Hamvention.

I solicit talks from individuals, groups, or a business. The talk must be
about SOFTWARE radio. I encourage Elecraft, Flex, TAPR/AMSAT, Quicksilver
and
others to participate. I think this is likely to be the last year as
through
the efforts of individuals, groups, and companies, we are entering
mainstream
territory.

Let me hear from you if you are interested. I will pursue invited talks
separately.

1. Upcoming School Contacts

Parkside Community College in Parkside, Cambridge, U.K. has been scheduled
for
an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on
Monday,
March 30 at 17:00 UTC. Station GB4FUN will handle the connection.

The Girl?s Middle School (GMS) in Mountain View, California has been
scheduled
for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on
Monday, March 30 at 18:22 UTC via telebridge station K6DUE in Maryland.
The
contact is planned with spaceflight participant Charles Simonyi,
KE7KDP/HA5SIK.
GMS is a small, independent school for girls in 6th - 8th grade. The
school?s
mission is to nurture and empower girls during
this pivotal time in their lives.
It looks for non-traditional educational opportunities to help girls
expand
their horizons.

An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has
been
scheduled for Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School in Dorado, Puerto
Rico.
The
contact will take place on Tuesday, March 31 at 15:36 UTC. The student
body is
made up of 577 students of which approximately
77% live under the poverty level.
100% of the students receive Title I services and over 100 students
receive
special education services. A Microsatellite Student Program has been
implemented where students design, construct, build and launch
microsatellites
which are then tracked and recovered with the help of amateur radio
operators.
The coordinating teacher has prepared a NASA
Explorer Schools proposal and other
science oriented proposals in the school to help motivate its largely
underprivileged population to become competitive professionals in the
global
economy. Two contests have been held at the school ? one for an activity
logo
and another for an essay. Scientists, state government functionaries,
Department of Education representatives, and
students from other grade levels in
elementary and high school have been invited to attend the event. Of
major
interest to the students is the fact that Joseph Acaba, the first
astronaut of
Puerto Rican descent, will be going to the ISS on STS 119. The school is
planning its own press releases and expects media coverage.

Milwee Middle School in Longwood, Florida has been scheduled for an
Amateur
Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday,
April 1
at 17:55 UTC via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium.

Carl Sandburg Elementary in the Lake Washington School district in
Kirkland,
Washington has been approved for an Amateur Radio on the International
Space
Station (ARISS) contact. The contact is slated for Thursday, April 2 at
19:35
UTC, assisted by telebridge station W6SRJ in California.

2. Contacts Cancelled

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contacts that
were
planned for the Sewickley Academy and the DaVinci
Science Center on March 12 and
14, respectively, were both cancelled due to scheduling issues. The
DaVinci
contact will be rescheduled in the near future.

3. Astronaut Training Status

An Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station (ARISS) basic operations and
school contact training course was held with Satoshi Furukawa, KE5DAW, on
Friday, March 6. Furukawa is currently assigned as a back up crew member
for
Expedition 22.

4. Italian School Contact Update

On Wednesday, February 25, students attending 1 Circolo Didattico G.
Marconi
in
Casamassima, Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the International
Space
Station (ARISS) contact with Mike Fincke, KE5AIT. News items covering the
contact are now available. See:

5. ARRL Article on Discovery

The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a short Web story on the
STS-119
mission which will carry ham astronaut Koichi Wakata, KC5ZTA, to the ISS.
See:
http://www.arrl.org/?artid=8825

The story was also posted in the ARRL Letter:
https://www.arrl.org/arrlletter/09/0313/

The ARRL Web site has 100,000 regular readers; the e-newsletter has a
circulation of 115,000.

6. ARRL QST Covers ARISS News

The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) published an Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station (ARISS) news item in its April 2009 issue of
QST.

It ran a short article called "NJ Scouts Fly
High.? It is about Boy Scouts from
the Central New Jersey Council earning their
Radio Merit Badges, mentored by the
Delaware Valley Radio Association and the David Sarnoff Radio Club. The
highlight of the educational activities was when Greg Olsen, KC2ONX, gave
a
presentation to the boys about his time on the ISS and used Amateur Radio
to
be
interviewed by students. There was a photo of the boys readying for their
own
QSOs on the air.

The ARRL monthly journal has a circulation of 150,000.

7. ARISS in Amateur Radio Newsline Article

On March 13, Amateur Radio Newsline (Report
#1648) ran a story on the Radio Club
of America (RCA) which donated a radio station to the Lake Monroe Amateur
Radio
Club in Orlando, Florida. The club gives demonstrations to schools and
children?s hospitals on how to contact the International Space Station
with
amateur radio. The article, ?Radio Education: RCA Donates Station to
Florida
Club,? may be viewed at: ftp://ftp.arnewsline.org/quincy/News/news.txt

Hi!

I just returned home in the past hour, after a fun day away from
Phoenix in the mountains and trees of northern Arizona. It was
a little breezy, some snow was still on the mountaintops and in
shady spots in the areas around 7000 feet/2134m elevation or
higher, and a great day to play radio.

I used the same spot I went to twice in 2008 to park on the
DM35/DM45 grid boundary (112 degrees North). In fact, I was able
to put my radio gear in the back of my truck exactly on the spot
I used for those two trips last year, and then take the now-
obligatory photos for VUCC documentation. I was along old US 66
just north of the I-40 freeway 20 miles/32km west of FLagstaff
AZ:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=35+15.570+n+112+0.00+w&jsv
=10
7&ie=UTF8&ll=34.669359,-112.071533&spn=3.812693,7.734375&t=h&z=7

I worked two AO-27 passes and two AO-51 passes from here this
afternoon/evening. The ISS gear was turned off for the spacewalk,
and remained off into the evening. SO-50 was passing by at almost
the same times as the two AO-51 passes, and I decided to work the
AO-51 V/U repeater instead of SO-50. I made 11 QSOs on each of
the AO-27 passes, 10 on the first AO-51 pass to the east, and 6
on the later western AO-51 pass. Stations from southern Mexico
to Alaska and Canada went in the log from there. Making 38 QSOs
on 4 passes, and avoiding the heat in Phoenix... not a bad day.

This was my first time on AO-27 since it was brought back from the
dead earlier this month. Nice to see so many stations on those 7-
minute passes. Hopefully it stays operational for a long time, to
fill in those afternoons before AO-51 comes by later in the day
(for those of us in the western USA). Of course, the first AO-51
pass I had was full of stations. Not too many, later in the day,
on the western pass.

Before I went out to the DM35/DM45 line, I took a bunch of pictures
of the Flagstaff area including the Lowell Observatory that is
above downtown Flagstaff. I'm thinking about taking the pictures I
have from today, and making a small slide show and making it
available to whoever wants it. With a digital camera I bought a
year ago, I now have lots of pictures and - with the trips I've
done in the last year - lots of stories I could put to "paper".

If I missed working you from DM35/DM45 today, I will be back in that
area during the upcoming summertime. There is a hamfest in Williams,
a small town about 10 miles/16km west of where I stopped today, and
I would probably make a trip back to this spot like I did before the
same hamfest last year. Plus any open weekend I have could be a good
time to go there, when it is over 110F (44C) here in Phoenix.

Good night, and 73!

Hi!

Thanks to WB3JFS for pointing out a typo in my earlier
posting. I parked on 112 degrees *West*, not North.
My error. The map link had my location right, at least.

Time for bed...

What are most AMSAT folks using for SSTV software? My objective is to TX
and
RX SSTV via AO-51 or ISS using a soundcard interface like the Rigblaster
Nomic. BTW, enjoyed the VS mode this past week on AO-51.
Thanks es 73,

I'm betting most use mmsstv http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/mmsstv/

Also, I have a question:

Is any digital SSTV being done on the birds? The program for the digital
SSTV
is "Digtrx", http://www.kiva.net/~djones/digtrx.htm

The digital SSTV is based on a modification of "DRM", and I've used it on
20
meter SSB, but it should work on FM even better
if you have a decent s/n ratio.

Hi all,

Hereby my first mail on this BB. I want to start with satellite
communication. I already build an eggbeater antenna, but togheter with my
TS2000 i receive only very poor signals. To work more comfotable, i want
to
build two yagi antennas (one for 2m and one for 70cm) with an
azimuth/elevation rotor system.

For the 2m version, I took the following design of DK7ZB as a start:
http://www.qsl.net/dk7zb/start1.htm -> 144MHz yasis -> 6 El-28-Ohm (2m60).
Because I want to tune this antenna to the upper side of the 2m band (I
had
145.800MHz as center frequency in mind), I entered the data of this yagi
in
MMANA GAL, a free NEC program (http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/mmana/).
After Calculation, i got totally diferent results as on the DK7ZB website.

Please find the MMANA file as an attachment on this mail. What am i doing
wrong?

Bert - ON4DMD

Either MMSSTV ot Ham Radio Deluxe, which will do full rig control, sat
predix,
logbook and all common digital modes.

GOMRF produced a kit, back in 1996 (the document says Phase 3D).

I've got one that was never built.

I have a request that is sort-of off topic with this list - please excuse.

I have run win APRS for several years to track vessels on water. But
the graphics are all land-based for road travel and show no marine
details. Also, they are kind of crude graphics for today's
standards. For road travel I obtained an old Delorme Street Atlas
program that supported APRS and although the program details are
seriously out of date it is still usable. But this is only useful
for land travel.

So my question is whether there is an APRS program that easily
imports map files and overlays mobile tracks? Ideally, I could
import any of the newer digital marine charts as a map. There are
map programs that allow laying out navigation and trace onto the map
display, but the way-points need to be manually input. I need an
APRS program that runs a track automatically from an APRS beaconing
station.

Thanks,
Ed - KL7UW
