Hi Jody,

Interesting recording.

The female voice clearly says, "Calling today, this is Memphis
Center?"... a Center controller picking up an aircraft in-flight,
probably for VFR "flight following" services, or she just missed a
call-up. Standard phraseology. Seems to match the "flight following"
thing since then...

The analysis of the tail number is incorrect. Later she talks a
couple of times to "Cessna 38U".

Tail numbers on-air are shortened to the last three characters of the
tail number, if no conflicting callsigns are on the frequency -- to
save airtime. Therefore that's not "N38U" as the full callsign (a
glider based out of Boulder, CO as you noted with the FAA registry),
but is a Cessna with a tail number ending in 38U, flying somewhere in
Memphis Center's controlled airspace.

At one point the flow of the conversation through standard phraseology
would indicate that the Cessna or another aircraft she's talking to is
at 5500' MSL. Making her a "low-altitude" sector at Memphis, or dual-
controlling (transmitting on more than one frequency) multiple
sectors, depending on time of day and traffic load.

There's also communications with a King Air, but I need to go get the
headphones out to pick that callsign out.

http://microvoltradio.com/ARTCC/KZME.htm

Right at the very end you also hear an aircraft call up "right
downwind", likely ISS has moved far enough East that Memphis Center
can no longer be heard, and the frequency is re-used by the FAA at a
towered airport somewhere further East.

At the very beginning of the recording, it sounds like the receiver is
wide enough that it's hearing some other stuff that's not on its
center frequency on the West Coast... or wherever the ground track
took ISS this particular day and time of this recording.

Thanks for sharing, neat to listen to...

Greetings,

Bit of a lurker here, but my day job is at a Satellite Earth station
for SES Americom, a satellite owner/operator.

Normally, when a satellite is about to run out of fuel, it is sent
into what is called a graveyard orbit, to keep it from drifting and
running into other satellites. It is boosted high above the
geosynchronous belt where it wont run into anything.

A satellite is usually hard wired for the frequencies in use. Up link
in the C band is usually 5.9 to 6.4 Ghz, and there are 24 TWTs, each
tuned to a 40 Mhz hunk of spectrum. So, Transponder 1 is the first 40,
transponder 2 is the second 40, etc....

At Ku band, it runs from 14 GHZ to 14.5 Ghz. sometimes the transponder
width is 40mhz, sometimes it is 54Mhz. again, the individual TWT is
tuned for its little slice.

All of this filtering is done pre and post amp by hard filters that
can not be changed from the ground.

Without command and control of the satellite, it is for all practical
purposes useless.

Hi!

I will be giving a satellite-related presentation for the
ThunderBird Amateur Radio Club in Glendale, Arizona, on Thursday, 19
March 2009. The meeting is in the Snell Building on the campus of
the Thunderbird School of Global Management, room 28. The campus is
on the southeast corner of 59th Avenue and Greenway Road - grid
DM33vo. The meeting starts at 7.00pm (0200 UTC), and my presentation
will be after the first half of the meeting - approximately 8.00pm.

Before the meeting, I will have a demonstration on AO-51. The
satellite will be in range between 6.33 and 6.47pm (0133-0147 UTC),
a high pass to my west. I will be on the 145.920/435.150 MHz
repeater, to allow anyone watching my demonstration listen in with a
2m/70cm FM transceiver.

73!

Tuned into AO-51 this morning (around 11:50 UTC) and I couldnt hear either
transponder. Is everything ok up there or am I having problems?

Hey Mike,

The 145.920/435.150 pair was up and working fine, albeit with only a few
stations in there. I heard N9AMW, NL7VX, WA4NVM and N5ZNL.

73,

Tim
