Today I sent a Birthday Card to Mike Fincke KE5AIT, via :
http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/birthday/index.html
- You can too ...

ISS is back on APRS, 145.825 FM of course. Not many stations on tonite :
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/ariss/index.cgi

Interesting stuff on the ISS home page :
http://www.nasa.gov/station

Here is an audio recording, as the crew learned of the potential conjunction :
http://www.nasa.gov/mp3/318202main_tca_highlights_clip3.mp3

I saw a link to a video they have made, showing some circuit board
repair experiments, but I haven't watched it yet.
Hummm, never thought about soldering without gravity.
I'd be happy to try it if they need someone to go . . .

For a broadcast station that's on the air 24/7, or at least hours a day,
requiring some kind of proof makes sense. But for a satellite contact,
either you were, in fact, on the bird and they DID hear you, or you weren't.
So if the card or request is for a date and time that I was on the
satellite, I'd honor it as an SWL.

But even for a 1-way acknowledgment, doesn't the receiving station need to
demonstrate that they actually heard you? I seem to recall years ago that
for broadcast stations you needed to supply a log of what was on the air
(song list, discussion topics, etc.). Otherwise, you could get cards from
every call in the book.

It may sound harsh, but if I get a card for someone not in my log, I keep it
with a note as to my conclusion, but do not send a reply. Fortunately, I
think it's only happened once or twice. Several times, however, I did find
their call scribbled on my desk pad, but they weren't in the log because I
didn't think we had a complete exchange. If their QSL info is correct, in
those cases I give them the benefit of the doubt, and send a 2-way
confirmation.

Hi Alan,

I'm not much of an expert on Predict, but I use it for driving my Az/El rotor
assembly. The ALON/ALAT items are for satellites that are stabilized in their
orientation towards Earth (such as AO-40), so you can predict how good the
pass is going to be, signal-wise. My database entry for AO-40 is "0, 352"
(without the quotes), as an example. I don't believe any of the current birds
are so equipped.

I've never used the schedule items, but now that you bring it up, I wonder if
AO-07 would qualify when it's in full sunlight?

Where in PREDICT does one plug in the bahn coordinates and schedules? I
cannot find this option
anywhere.

We're talking about KB2BD's Predict for dos, correct?

Hi Kent & the group,

I plan on making recordings myself here so I can go back and get the
details. Kinda hard with an arrow in one hand, an HT in the other and an
overloaded cerebrum in the middle. :) Anyhow it's fun and it's what you
make of it and as time progresses, I'm sure I'll be finding shortcuts that
will benefit me.

Losing data is always a pain and backing it up can be just as painful as
well. I hope this doesn't sound like a shameless plug, but what I've done
is sign up for Carbonite for data backup over the internet. Unlimited
amount for a good price and you can save yourself a big headache, if or
when, something goes wrong. My logs and audio recordings are already there.

73,

Jeff WB3JFS

Rich,

Look in the file PREDICT.DB which you need to edit manually for the bahn
coordinates as well as the schedules. Greg provided the format for the bahn
coordinates, so now to figure out the scheduling.

Not my 910H, but I did remote my TS-2000 for a few years when I was on
travel for work , I could then work HF, Sats, and the local repeater's
remotely. Cool thing about the ts-2000 was you could power it on and off
with TRX-Manager. Skype worked great for the audio. I would start with
TRX-Manager software as it sends just text to control the radio, you will
need all the hotel's iffy connection bandwidth speed for the Skype audio!

I'm looking for opinions on my first satellite rig. What seems to be the
norm that everyone is using? I'm looking of a base rig.

As I recall (without looking) the InstantTrack method, something like
000B045S090B270
would indicate mode B from 000 to 045, mode S from 045 to 090, back to B, etc
for an orbital schedule, but as Greg says we don't have any of those.
Maybe a test of something like that would at least show if the format
was similar for Predict. I can't think of what else it might be useful for.
I don't think we have any that would use a weekly schedule either,
but I understand the general query to find the formats ...

With source code in hand (on screen), I'm sure someone (with more time on
their hands than me) could figure out what it was looking for, and how it
was formatted. .. Or someone might show up and just tell us.

Good luck Alan... /;^)

Are you talking about controlling it over the Internet or a LAN? I have
successfully used Ham Radio Deluxe with my 910H for both purposes. I used
Microsoft NetMeeting for the audio portion, although Skype is supposed to
work, as well.

Interesting - I have no predict.db file. I've never seen any mention of it
in the source code, either. Just to clarify and hopefully resolve my brain
fog,
I am referring to KD2BD's version 2.2.1D of predict for DOS, released Nov 4,
2002.
If there is a more recent version not mentioned on his website, I'd be
interested
in obtaining it.

website I'm referring to -
http://www.qsl.net/kd2bd/predict.html

Or perhaps someone else has taken the source and modded it as I have over the
years.
I know the software has much more versatility under Linux, but right now I'm
just
concerned with the latest DOS build.

Tnx,
Rich, N8UX

What else do you want to do with it? HF also? VHF long distance? What
price range? What antenna system are you using? There is a myriad of
options.

I'm looking for opinions on my first satellite rig. What seems to be the
norm that everyone is using? I'm looking of a base rig.

Thanks

Sorry, Johnny, I should have been more specific.

The rigs seem to be in 3 categories for base rigs (my information):

$ = under $400
$$ = $400 to $850
$$$ = $850 to $1500
$$$ = greater than $1500

1. Satellite/VHF/UHF only: (IC910 all mode $$$$, or FM rigs that will work
the FM-only birds $ and $$)

2. HF/VHF/UHF - all mode: (TS2000 $$$$, Icom 7000 $$$, FT857/897 $$,
FT817/QRP $$)

These are all new rigs. There are used rigs like FT847 that have same
features as the TS2000 and IC 7000. FT847 can be had for $$ if you can get
one.

I have two FT817 rigs I use as base. They are all mode HF/VHF/UHF, small,
tons of features, affordable, nice receiver, I take them on road trips also.
I have an amp for weak signal non-sat work on 2 meters.

For sat work, esp for non-FM birds, you really need two rigs or a separate
VFO. The cheapest way I could get two rigs was two FT817 rigs. I really
enjoy these for HF work also. Although I also have a Kenwood TS570 for
higher power work.

There are some quirks with each of the rigs, recommend evaluating them via
things like www.eham.net product reviews.

If I had unlimited budget, I would have gotten IC910H because of the higher
power on VHF/UHF and dual VFO's. But the problem would be that I could not
take the rig on the road, and these FT817 rigs are simply a joy to have.

Others will have varying opinions, so don't take my feedback as
gospel...only as a data point.
