I heard about this in school today when my English teacher got a text
message from her Boy Friend, who works in mission control. The article is
below.
Astronauts safe after debris passes space station Crew evacuated to Soyuz
lifeboat as a precautionBy MARK CARREAU Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle March
12, 2009, 12:03PM

The three American and Russian astronauts aboard the international space
station took shelter in their Soyuz escape capsule briefly today to wait out
the close approach of debris from an old U.S. commercial rocket stage, NASA
said today.

The debris, about 4 inches long, whizzed within three miles of the orbital
outpost at 11:39 a.m., CDT, causing no damage.

However ?just in case ? Americans Mike Fincke and Sandy Magnus and Russian
Yury Lonchakov climbed aboard their Soyuz lifeboat between 11:35 and 11:45
a.m., said NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries.

?We are all very happy the debris did not impact,? NASA?s Mission Control
told the astronauts.

The U. S. Strategy Command, the branch of the Department of Defense that
tracks the thousands of active and inactive spacecraft and other man-made
debris circling Earth, notified Mission Control of the close approach late
Wednesday.

The notice left too little time to maneuver the space station well away from
the PAM-D rocket upper-stage debris, Humphries said.

The astronauts train for an escape aboard the Soyuz in case of a fire,
chemical leak, debris impact or medical emergency.

So far, an evacuation to Earth has not been necessary.

It as up last night on 145.825, running 1200 bps. Hope to see you there later!

Also, NO-44 is operational during daylight hours - 1200 bps on 145.827. Or,
rather, it has been this week.

I was wondering what others may be doing when they receive an
"questionnable" request for a QSL. Last week while on vacation in Orlando I
attempted to make some AO51 contacts with a handheld station. Althought I
was receiving many stations, I was unsuccesful in establishing a contact and
never heard anyone call me back. I must have been getting out though as I
have received an eQSL request from a South American station. Is it normal
practice to ignore the request or to reply with refusal to QSL. If it were a
mistaken callsign situation I would reply with a "sorry" but in the case of
a bogus request I was wondering what others may be doing.
Next time I will use a better antenna hi hi.
Thanks & 73

Hi all,

I just received a QSL card today from KB0RZD but the date and time don't
match what I have in my log. I've looked for an email address but have been
unable to locate one. How do members usually handle a situation like this?
My log shows the QSO as being on 8 March 2009 between 13:29 and 13:30 UTC on
AO-51. His QSL indicates the QSO was 7 March 2009 at 14:11UTC. I have no
record of any contacts made during that pass. Other stations contacted
during this pass were W7JPI, N5ZNL and K8YSE. If any of these stations would
contact me off list to help me verify my log entries it would be greatly
appreciated. I mailed out my own QSLs to those I had not made previous
contacts with yesterday.

Thanks.

The radio comes with a four manuals one of which covers the Packet,
APRS, and Slow-Scan operation. It is titled "Instruction Manual
Specialized Communications". On page 45 of in the commands section you
will find this entry.

Command Name : Kiss
Short : Kiss
Default : OFF
Parameter :ON/OFF
Description : When ON, switching the power OFF then ON causes
the TNC to enter (or Exit) KISS mode. "STA" and "CON" appear and blink
alternately several times when the TNC enters KISS mode. To exit KISS
mode, you may send the binary CO FF CO command ( not ASCII characters)
from the keyboard.

That is it. Good luck with it. 73's << John

Hi.

For anyone interested in space propusion, there's a short introductory video
on 'Euronews'

8 minutes in length, I thought the business end of the ion engine used for
the 350kg moon orbiter Smart1 was quite neat. - Can be held in one hand!

Thanks for the post David!

For those who had the URL truncated by their email program (like mine) try

Click on the article headline, which will appear.

Orbital "modification" of an LEO satellite, for instance, is coming.
Just a matter of time!!

There is no reason to stabilize a satellite after it is boosted to the
graveyard orbit. The satellite might have power and be easy to track,
but the antennas won't point towards earth very often.

.....nice this ion-engine David. I would like to imagine a future HEO for
radio-amateurs with
a propulsion like that and a... nuclear-battery with 30 years life-time.

No batteries, no arcjet - like P3-phase... they were always the source of
our problems.

Hi!

I will be part of the AMSAT table at the Scottsdale Amateur Radio
Club's "Springfest" hamfest on Saturday, 14 March 2009. The hamfest
is at Scottsdale Community College, east of the AZ-101 freeway exit
46 on Chaparral Road in Scottsdale AZ (grid DM43bm). It starts at
0600 local (1300 UTC), and runs through midday.

During the morning, I will be on various satellites doing on-air
demonstrations. Look for WD9EWK on AO-51 and possibly some of the
other satellites (SO-50, FO-29, VO-52). I have visible passes on the
last 3 satellites in the 1700-1800 UTC hour, and I don't know which
pass or passes I will attempt. If I am on VO-52, I will try to put
myself around 145.910-145.915 MHz USB on the downlink. For FO-29, I
will try to be around 435.865-435.870 MHz USB on the downlink.
Please give me a call if you hear me during any of these
demonstrations.

73!

Ian,
Good question. I too have recently received QSL cards with SASEs
included from people that I know I never spoke with on the birds. They are
going to a lot of trouble sending these, but if I never have definitively
established contact with them, they shouldn't be disappointed when they
don't receive a response from me. I don't like sending QSLs myself anyway.
Establishing relationships with other hams is more interesting to me that
establishing a card collection. Some people really get off on it and thats
great for them.

You could always send a QSL confirming only his receiving you (like an SWL
card on HF: strike out the "2-way Mode" section & write in "SWL")...

If it wasn't for a contact made from some place other than home, a good
solution is to drop them an email and set up a schedule for a second QSO to
make it an official two-way.

Here is my "long politics regarding "questionnable" QSL request paper form or
E form

1-If it's not in my log book burden of proof is on the sender or it will be a
SWL QSL eg: One way reception report from me the
transmitting.station. It helps also to add with who i was in QSO if it is the
case.

2-Notice to E-QSLer please send it as fast you as you can you will increased
your odds one year after the "QSO" it looks like
"questionable" and click on the box send an email to advise that you send an
E-QSL

What if it was simply an honest mistake of someone writing the call
down wrong and then sending for a card from whom they thought they
worked. I know I have never seen a post on th bb asking for the W5
call I worked this evening to contact them.

But even for a 1-way acknowledgment, doesn't the receiving station need to
demonstrate that they actually heard you? I seem to recall years ago that for
broadcast stations you needed to supply a log of what was on the air (song
list, discussion topics, etc.). Otherwise, you could get cards from every
call in the book.

It may sound harsh, but if I get a card for someone not in my log, I keep it
with a note as to my conclusion, but do not send a reply. Fortunately, I
think it's only happened once or twice. Several times, however, I did find
their call scribbled on my desk pad, but they weren't in the log because I
didn't think we had a complete exchange. If their QSL info is correct, in
those cases I give them the benefit of the doubt, and send a 2-way
confirmation.
