That is a GREAT idea! I wonder what the incremental cost is. I'm sure
they wouldn't be willing to just turn the whole thing over to amateur
radio. But maybe they can be convinced anyway.

I have 8 rooms left in the AMSAT block. If they are not booked by April
14th, they go back to the hotel for use by the general public. If you are
interested in a room, please call me at 301-589-6062 before April 14th.

They already plan to fill it with garbage before undock and deorbit.
"The Jules Verne will remain at the station until August. Once the
station crew has unloaded it and repacked it with trash, the ATV will
undock and begin its final flight into the Earth's atmosphere, where it
will burn up over the Pacific Ocean. "

You might convince ESA to linger a bit before deorbit to conduct some
experimentation using amateur radio but I suspect they will want to
clear that double decker bus sized satellite from the sky.

Maybe add some telemetry for a long-term microgravity composting
experiment...

Ron,
George has it exactly right. You don't need to fiddle with the radio except
to tune up and down the passband to see if other people are on the bird.
First select the satellite you want to access by clicking on one of the
letters for the satellites you have configured on your SATPC32 display. The
selected satellite will be highlighted on the display. Grey letters
represent no configured satellite.
In the upper left of the SATPC32 display, click on the C. It changes to C+
to show CAT tracking in activated. Watch the radio when you do this. It
should respond by going into satellite mode and tuning to the frequencies
shown in SATPC32. Sometimes I have to repeat this once or twice before the
radio and SATPC32 sync up. Just check the frequency on the radio to verify
that it has change to that displayed by the program.
Next click on CAT in the menu bar. This opens the CAT Tuning display
window. Here you can tweek the uplink and downlink frequencies if the
downlink is too high or too low. It will need some adjustment depending on
the satellite and the radio. With satellites with multiple modes, you can
change modes here by just clicking on the appropriate line. Once the
downlink sounds reasonable, you are good to go. You may have to tweek
things a little on high passes. I've noticed the doppler seems to get off a
little. On the FM birds, you don't have to touch the radio. On the SSB
birds, you can tune for other operators. You will also have to tune to
follow stations that are not using doppler control. If both stations have
doppler control, you shouldn't have to do much of anything once you have
found another station and started a QSO.
If you change satellites, you must close and reopen the CAT box.

------------------------------
With SatPC32, you won't need to set memories on the rig... in the
Doppler.sqf file, you need to have an entry for VO-52 that looks like this:
VO-52,145900,435250.3,USB,LSB,REV,0,0
This tells your radio the relationship between the uplink and downlink
frequencies, what modes to use, etc., for that particular satellite. You
can either open Doppler.sqf in Notepad (it's in the folder where you
installed SatPC32, usually C:/Program Files/SatPC32), or from the Auxiliary
Files section under the "?" option on the menu bar. Make sure that you not
only have matched the addresses for your radio in the Setup menu, but the
baudrate aand COM port as well, and put in a CAT delay value of around 60 or
so. Then when you select VO-52 as the active satellite and press the "C"
button in the upper left of the display, the program should automatically
switch the radio to Satellite mode, LSB on the uplink, USB on the downlink,
and set the frequencies to the values in the Doppler.sqf file. (Don't
forget to turn the squelch knob, which is the RF Gain control in SSB mode,
UP) You can then tune up or down from there manually, and the uplink VFO
will track your changes to t!
he downlink.
Once you can hear yourself on the downlink, follow the instructions in the
file FAQ.htm, in the section titled "AO-40 Operation," to fine-tune your
uplink to match your downlink (every radio is slightly different).
You should then be good to go!

George, KA3HSW

For Leo Mobile, I started with the biggest antenna
that will fit
on my car and in my garage and then staring working on
the coax.
I use a 2/440 splitter into 2 Mono band NMO magmounts.
This way I get Taller antennas and more gain than with
a Dual Bander (2/440).
2 meters is a 5/8 wave mono bander (Salesman gain = 4,
Dipole gain = 1).
440 is a stacked mono band collinear 1/2 wave stacked
over a 1/2 wave (Salesman gain = 6, Dipole gain = 3).
The Amp on 440 with built-in preamp was the last part
I installed.
Although, for the first 12 years of Leo Mobile I never
used and amp.
Even though I have an amp and preamp in my car, I
would not recommend
them to the casual user. The maintenance is usually
high to keep them
running. Stick with the Biggest antenna and best coax
first.
Coax Tips for Low loss.
If you buy a new NMO Mag Mount, make sure you can find
a way to dissect
the mount and remove
the magnet, etc. so you can replace the coax cable.
On some Larsen, its easy to pop off the magnet to get
to the screws
hidden under the magnet.
You will need to replace teflon pad.
Here are some number I put together on coax loss for
the typical mobile
installation.
dB Loss dB Loss
Type Freq/Length Max Freq/Length
Max
Center 440 440 Pwr 900 900
Pwr Size
Conductor
Feet 15 100 15 100
RG-58/U 1.5 9.9 105 2.2 14.5
60 .195"
.032
RG-58/A 1.5 9.9 105 2.2 14.5
60 .195"
Stranded
RG-8X 1.2 8.1 250 1.8 12.1
150 .240"
Stranded
LMR-240UF 0.5 3.2 380 0.7 4.7
260 .240"
.059
RG-58 comes in many flavors, No letter, A, C and U
U sometimes is a solid 20 AWG copper center.
A and C have a stranded center conductor.
The center conductor size would be similar to solid,
but will have a
little more loss.
Most cars will need 15 to 17 feet of coax.
RG-8X and LMR-240 have the same Outside diameter
(.240"),
however the LMR has a foil shield and half the loss of
RG-8X.
The LMR-UF-240 version is the Ultra Flex flavor and
can bend easier.
>From this list of small car style coax, the LMR beats
them all, in
lowest loss for the size and highest transmitter power
loads.
I was planning on installing a 440 AMP in my car, but
after looking at
the coax, I realized that I would fry the RG-58 coax
at 100+ watts on
440mc.
I dissected an old Larsen Magmount and replaced the
original RG-58U with
LMR-240-UF.
I have been running this configuration for over a year
with good results
and I
have not melted any coax. There is also a nice added
benefit, in the
winter time
during a long rag chew on 440, the 440 amp keeps the
passenger seat
warm.
For those of you interested in 900 mc, the benefits
are even greater.
900 mc
10 watts, in, 15 feet of LMR-240, = 7.7 watts out
10 watts, in, 15 feet of RG-58/U, = 5.8 watts out

Decomposing garbage could provide fuel for a thermoelectric generator as well
as gas for station keeping jets.
