Wiki quotes the cost of the Iridium constellation at $6 Billion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iridium_(satellite)
An HEO satellite could cost $4 million to launch add to that the cost of the
satellite itself, maybe $500k using volunteer labour.

Good Evening,
My current station setup is a TS790, Yaesu G5400 with the Sat688 controller.
There is a 440/144 antennas, no preamp yet. I do have a 440 preamp, but I
have not set it up. Currently trying SATPC32, but may try HRD when he
finishes adding the Easycomn1 communications. I think the setup is working.
I do have a series of questions so that I can make my fist QSO..
What are the better satellites to work evenings here in the NE?
Are some easier to work?
I know there are some issues with the TS790 (so I have been told). Any tips?
Do you shut off the computer control after it comes into view?
Is there a decent Linux program that will control what I have??
Any tips or help would be great!!

I heard some packets, but couldn't decode anything.
Also don't see any current beacons via findu .. ..
Signal seemed pretty weak.
Any other reports ? Maybe I just got out of practice .?.

On January 25 at 2040 EDT my transceiver was left on 145.800mhz and i hear a
couple of packet burst. ISS was not in view at that time and
no other packet cube sat orbits seems to match? Is it something i heard in
direct? the signal fade and he was shifting in frequency exactly
as it was coming from a satellite?
Any clues?

Ryan,
Checked this morning, and the Celestrak server is working fine. The usual
problem with downloading is a firewall which needs an exception to permit
SATPC32 to access the Internet. If your program was downloading, and now
isn't, I would still check the firewall for blockage. If all else fails,
cut the URL from the Celestrak.SQF file and paste it into the URL window of
your browser. You should get the desired file, which you can save as a text
file, and then copy it to the Kepler directory. Make certain you get the
right directory. It will be something like
C:\Documents and Settings\WA4SCA\Application Data\SatPC32\Kepler
There will be other Kepler directories, but they are for backup and default
data.
Let us know the results.

I was reading the post concerning the Kepler files in SATPC 32. I think I
might be having trouble with getting the recent downloads. I don't see any
of the new SATS. I have enabled SATPC32 in my firewall. Here is what is in
my Kepler folder:
Amatur.txt 11/11/2007
Doppler.SQF.txt 10/10/2008
geo.txt 11/12/2007
intelsat.txt 11/11/2007
nasa.all 11/18/2007
noaa.txt 9/1/2005
weather.txt 11/11/2007
The files look old, is that right?

Hi Nader,
Yes, I can also see a small frequency offset even during TCA.
There are 2 new TLE on Celestrak available:
2009-002B
1 33493U 09002B 09027.19622134 .00000862 00000-0 11688-3 0 140
2 33493 98.0479 138.9086 0055232 319.8200 39.8940 14.80589027 609
2009-002J
1 33500U 09002J 09026.99356970 .00000018 00000-0 95086-5 0 136
2 33500 98.0467 138.7095 0019673 341.8207 18.2285 14.80603457 555
You can see OBJ J is very closed to OBJ B (our assumed PRISM). Maybe we have
to change the TLE for PRISM?
I will analyze both TLE with PRISM this evening.

Mike,
Yep, those are really, really old. In addition, you are missing the
tle-new.txt file which has the newest launches. That should be one of the
options in the update window from the Celestrak server, or you can add it in
manually as discussed earlier. Even if you had current versions of the ones
you do have, you would not have the latest launches.
Look at the bottom of the Satellite window. It will give you the path and
date of the files the program is using. Click on the various data files,
and look what the date is. If your update is working, they should be
current dates. If they are, then you were looking in the wrong directory,
and you can go ahead and delete them. Note that there are more than one
Kepler directories created by the program, and different versions put them
in different places. Only one is the "active" Kep directory.
It the ones show in the Satellite window are the old files, then there is a
problem with your update. When you do that, it should give a message
confirming successful update. If not, it will time out with an error
message.
Let us know what you find.

I heard some packets, but couldn't decode anything.
Also don't see any current beacons via findu .. ..
Signal seemed pretty weak.
Any other reports ????Maybe I just got out of practice .?.
? Thanks? /;^)

Lots of noise on AO-51 prevented me from getting clear download of pictures.
Did get two that were clear enough to see they were from WP4CNU and KB2HSH.
Several interfering carriers came on several times during SSTV transmissions.
Anyone who is copying pictures please let us know if we are getting through.
Copies of pictures would also be appreciated. Don't know if I succeeded last
night or not.
Thanks & 73,
Al W8KHP

Greetings,
The ISS will be doing a re-boost Feb. 4, 2009.
The last re-boost a week or two ago surprised
and confounded a few people judging by the
postings to the BBS. Now you know.

Al,
I don't know what time you are referring to on AO-51.
The first pass on the west coast (01:04Z) was OK,
Had exchanges with KE5GDB and VE7VW with no
problems. Good pictures both ways.
The second pass was completely quiet. I called on voice
several times and sent CQ pictures with no reply
I did hear some Spanish voices in there a couple of times,
and a couple of other unidentified voice transmissions.
