Hi Iain-

The units have a small 1/8" plug on the back that appears to be the one that
the Hosenose folks say is the port to the interface existing internal ICOM
interface unit. I'm thinking I don't need the UX-14 as they may already have
it. That's what I think, but I'm a senior, so, thoughts sometimes go awry...
away...

Ah, if you already have a UX-14 in the rigs, then the LCU-3 is probably
all you need, as the UX-14 simply converts from CI-IV to CI-V.

Sorry for the noise - mind you UX-14's are soooo rare, they should
probably be framed!!!

What a thrill to announce my call while I was just getting into the
footprint of the ISS, and getting a response from Mike - NA1SS, of the
crew of the Shuttle!

At first I didn't hear anyone, it was quiet, but I heard my downlink
stronger than usual, and all of a sudden, I heard "W4AS this is Mike
NA1SS of the International Space Shuttle". I think my first words
were, are you really in the shuttle?

He went on and worked a few more stations, he didn't seem to be in a
hurry, and we actually had a bit of a rag chew, but at 4:30 pm eastern
time, I guess there weren't too many hams trying to hear the ISS.

Just wanted to put this up here, so others can be aware that they are
active on the 'repeater' 70cm up and 2 meters down.

At one point the signal was 60 db over S9, I should have turned my
preamp off to see what the actual reading was.

If anyone recorded the pass I would love to have it. Guess I should
start to record them from now on.

That's the way it was set up. But main window persists in
transmitting out of the second digital window.

I just have assigned the main RX audio channel to that second
instantiation of MMTTY, and it operates as it should. It's just wierd
that the main logging window persists in actuating the second digital
window.

Doug,

Are the two copies of MMTTY run from two different folders? This is
required in order that each copy can have its own mmtty.ini file. You
can set up the MMTTY copy used from DI1 to receive from the left
channel (main RX) and transmit using FSK, and set up the copy used from
DI2 for AFSK, receiving from the right channel (the 2nd RX).
Alternatively, you could set the second copy up for FSK, but that would
require a separate serial port for each copy of MMTTY - typically you
would do this for SO2R (FSK from both radios).

I have used such a setup, configured for FSK in DI1 and AFSK in DI2, in
SO1V with the two VFOs linked. If you program a couple of function keys
with {CAT1ASC} macros to switch the radio between FSK D and AFSK A you
can even transmit in FSK from DI1 or AFSK from DI2 as you choose (both
copies transmit from VFO A). Using the same configuration in SO2V with
the 2nd RX unlinked, the DI2 copy becomes a read-only decoder for the
2nd RX and the radio transmits only from DI1 in FSK.

Rich VE3KI

It never does.

I have a recording of the end of Sebastian's contact, all of mine, and a few
others after mine until I lost the bird. You can download it at

Need Antenna experts on very-short, yet broadband antennas.
Sorry for off-amsat-topic post, but some research students need:

Size: on the order of 3 feet or less
Freq: 10 MHz
BW: 500 KHz
Range: 1 km between like antennas
Power: say 10W?

We know how to make very short HF antennas, we know how to make
broadband antennas, but we don't know how to make very short,
very broadband antennas. Looked at some H field claims, but they
seemed to be snake-oil salesmen.

You can also get a separation kit from Yaesu that lets you mount the rotors
apart. I've got one and it works fine.

A similar and related question. I'm building a 3element 2m and 7element 70cm
beam using the Wa5VJB Cheap Yagi design ( I am thinking 1 inch PVC instead of
wood). In the original design it puts both on the same boom, the 70cm antenna
in front of the 2M. This will make for somewhat a longer boom and I'm hoping
for alternatives. I know the Arrow has the antennas interleaved as does the
Cushcraft A270 and mfj-1868 but I cant help but think there is interaction
between them that I wont have the equipment or expertise to compensate for. I
will be mounting horizontal.

Instead can I stack them one over the other and if so how far apart? (same
question as original poster). Or how about side by side? Will that be less
sensitive and how far apart in that case?

Hi all, perhaps what appears to be a simple question but how far apart do I
need to space a 6 ele X yagi for 2mtrs (1 wavelength long) and a pair of 12
ele X for 70cms (horizontally spaced and 3 wavelengths long each). The
antennas are all homebrew and I know that as far apart as possible is the best
solution BUT this is not possible so just how far should I be looking for as a
minimum? I am trying to make sure that the de-sensing of any other radio
equipment is kept to a minimum (no fancy rigs here, an old FT817 for 70cms and
a FT-480r with a 25 watt linear when needed).

The sep kit that I have consists of some studs that go into the el rotor
housing where the bracket was, and some nuts and "muffler clamps" (like 1/2 a
u-bolt and clamp) that clamp the rotor housing to the side of the mast. The
bottom end of the mast goes into a regular mast mount clamp (GC-038?) turned
"upside down", and installed on the top of the az rotor. You could use two of
these to mast-mount the az rotor, and then put a mast on the top. I use the
sep kit with a G-5500 and an 8' Glen Martin tower. The az rotor goes on the
tower shelf, and the mast goes up through the top of the tower and thrust
bearing, and I have the el rotor about 6' above the thrust bearing. This gives
me enough room to do a full 180 elevation flip with my antennas, and still
clear the ground.
I'm going to mount the whole shebang on a little Harbor Freight trailer this
year, and tow it down to our Field Day site. Should be much easier than
building everything up "from scratch" each year!
